This Is My CHurch

an EP which is sure techno and not psychedelic PER SE, however, it features haunting, sinister, and ominous elements... sounds and emotions which a daring psychonaut would be interest to explore

I was into techno as a teen, I had quite a DJ career actually, I won the I Love Techno DJ contest in 2000 and got to play on I Love Techno in the main hall in Flanders expo Gent, Belgium (the largest indoor techno festival in Europe, with about 25000 ppl attending).

I was a huge fan of Jeff Mills, he played with 3 decks and a 909 drum machine, I played with 3 decks and a 909 groovebox...

This used to be real rave music, and in the 90's this was accompanied by great (Mitsubishi) xtc pills And speed...

Jeff Mills really tells a story, he Plays in a very specific style and pays great detail to moments of hard banging techno drums and moments of a little more relaxed techno, he sais a DJ must switch between moments for ppl to dance and moments were the boys and the girls can get together...

He tries to create science fiction music, often his music is about space, ufo s,... But also other stuff, one record expresses a state of schizophrenia... He is mostly inspired by the comic books he Read as a child such as the silver surfer...

He likes minimal art, which is reflected in his music...

His DJ style is to create a new 'record' using 3 decks and switching 3 records very fast from one to the other...

According to Mills, techno should Express something and if the music does not reflect the title of a record (OR the other way around ...) Its not techno...

Another interesting definition of techno was given by Westbam, one of the members of Mayday and involved with the love parade (the biggest techno event in the world which I attended for many yrs, followed by An afterparty in the legendary club tresor in Berlin, germany, where Jeff Mills was a resident DJ for many yrs) and Westbam said: techno is not machines that sound like music, but music that sounds like machines...

Generally accepted is that techno is music that searches for New sounds and is considered to be all new music, however according to this definition Britney Spears once was techno...

I also liked Dave Clarke a lot, which is UK techno VS Jeff Mills which is Detroit techno, Both are pioneers. Dave Clarke has a very eclectic style, he also Plays a lot of electro (I really enjoyed electro boogie I and II) and like Jeff Mills he uses a lot of tricks in his DJ ING, however he uses more scratches than Jeff Mills...

I also liked Chicago techno, also called getto tech, of which the most famous dj's are DJ funk and the Godfather - this music had very little Melody and uses non stop (according to Mills) 'pussy' lyrics. According to Mills all vocals in techno should be non explicit...

Jeff Mills actually started together with another DJ the UR, the underground recistance, and techno was so looked down upon in those days in Detroit by hip hop lovers that they would rush on stage when there was a crowd, wearing masks, play a short set and rushes off stage as they risked getting shot...

Jeff Mills started DJ ING when his brother, a hip hop DJ, gave him his decks and records and at first Mills got quite gangsta playing hip hop, but his brother told him that this was nog like him and that he should develop his own style, which he surely did with great succes...

Other techno styles I like are tribal techno, and a rather unknown style that as far as I know is only played by a few dj's, like Perry, in the underground club Leipzig 1040 in germany, this style is very disturbed, really dark, crazy music, very pounding but very melodic...

I also like space dj's, that's a belgian techno duo with a style which reminds of Jeff Mills, but with oldskool mixed with newer stuff and a lot less organized than Mills OR Clarke...

I also like Sven vath, he had a legendary club on the ultimate party island Ibiza, spain, which I visited quite some Times... His track wasserman is amazing...

I dont like Laurent Garnier that much, its too soft for me, but I do respect him cause imo he creates interesting sounds and vibes... For example the sound of the big baboo, the man with the red hat and xtc are good tracks...

Surgeon also has some crazy, interesting sounds...

I dont know exactly who made this record, I think IT was Richie Hawtin, Aka plasticman, but there is a record that over and over, with a fat beat, repeats a phrase of Eminem 'nobody listens to techno now Lets go', I liked this...

Another thing about Dave Clarke, he made quite a lot very good techno remixes like dream on from Depeche mode and 'here in my car I can do what I want I can lock all my Doors and let nobody out, in cars' OR the electro remix sandwiches...

The drumcode of techno, what surprises most ppl as It has a 4/4 rythm, is 303, this is also a very famous record by public energy and presents some of the first acid techno sounds...

I quit my DJ career when vinyl was not that popular anymore and the scene switched to cd's and laptops, this was not what dj ING was about for me, also I felt like I couldnt really grow anymore as a DJ and IT was too easy to really be great at IT, so I sold everything, my decks, records and groovebox and mixer and I purchased my first piano, I played piano from age 6 but didn't have my own piano, and I went on to the conservatory to study classical music, piano and composition, you cant really get a PhD in that, but I studied on after my master, which I finished with first prize, and did a post graduate...

I can keep going like this, but I already feel like its a really long post, for which Im sorry, but i do hope some of you like reading IT...
