Can someone tell me what the code button is for?

there's a hash button when you go to advanced view when posting a thread that wraps code tags around text. Does anyone know what exactly this is and what it's used for?

Simply changes the font to coding font as far as I can gather.
Someone else may correct me though, I've never really used it.
