Can opiate constipation kill you?

In my head less and less.
The other day I was talking to some friends about opiates and they said you can die from the constipation. They said that is how Elvis died. I heard the elvis rumor recently so I assumed it was fake but maybe its true.

Can you really die from opiate constipation or from straining too hard? I know that bowel impaction is very dangerous but how do you know if that is the case? I'm mainly worried about all this because I'm thinking about getting on methadone soon and know there will be constipation issues.
 
Elvis did not die from constipation, but it is possible (usually in the elderly). Death shouldn't be the only concern, though... bowel obstructions are serious enough. Try to eat fiber and use laxatives or suppositories to help you have regular bowel movements.
 
Yes... Constipation can kill u... Constipation is basically a intestinal blockage caused by your own feces.. Which when not treated can cause a Intestinal Rupture and you bleed out or Die from Sepsis due to Overwhelming infection..

I should know... I had a intestinal rupture, Flat lined for 2-4 minutes on the surgery table.. Surgeon had to remove 6 1/2 feet of my small intestine. The cause.. Intestinal blockage...

Now the normal person, so NOT die of constipation, because they should have enough sense to take care of it.. The Pain of a intestinal blockage rivals child birth.( I go to Support groups for intestine problems Ibs Crohns Ibd ) and all the woman would rather give birth than have one...

just be careful.. if you don't have a Bowel movement for a long time, go to a clinic. All else fails go to the ER, they'll pump you full of Morphine or Dilaudid and give you an IV, and give you and enema if need be.. Been there 20-30 times..
 
Yes they can, though its exceedingly rare. If you have this condition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_megacolon and you avoid medical attention long enough you have a possibility of dying from infection as the waste products decay in your intestines releasing huge amounts of bacteria into your system.

Elvis was doing opiates? Weird, I've always thought he was only doing barbiturates and (prescribed) amphetamines...

Elvis was a walking poly-pharmaceutical zombie by the time he croaked, and it was only by an act of god he didn't bite the big one earlier. Though if he had lived to be able to see the emergence of benso's as opposed to barbiturates for sleep concerns and anxiety I'm sure the massive therapeutic to toxic window would have him slinging his cheesy rock n roll riffs to this very day!
 
Yeah I should clarify, it's common as far as causes for haemorrhages go, not it's common for it to happen :)

About as common as having a mortal brain aneurysm or an aortic rupture during sex at the tender age of 21 with a clean bill of health isn't it? ;)

Edit: Poor grandpa found dead on the toilet rotting away and 3/4s of the way naked. What an awful way to be found dead! :(

Edit2: I guess post-death he would have gotten it all out after all! Hurray for post death pooping!
 
I believe Dilaudid and Oxycodone were his flavors of opiate.

(percodan at the time? I know I read oxycodone and wondered what scripts for oxy were around back than)


Elvis was the King, and he woke up to shots of dilaudid and dexedrine everymorning, I would too if it was on the menu affordably.....Than took mass barbs and stims (opis to I assume) to balance his mood at will.

Micheal Jackson was the king of pop, and he woke up, or went to bed shall we say with shots demorol and benzos.

Anyone noticing a pattern here.

no but really, if you do get rich.... dont die doped up on the toilet.

according to Elvis' brother, he died by suffocation and was clean at the time he died. he was so weak that he either died falling off the couch (or it might have been the toilet, it was a long time ago) and suffocated because he couldn't get up and his face was in the thick carpet. i heard his step brother speak at a church service when i was a kid.

Actually, ISTR that death while "straining at stool" is not all that uncommon. Quite a few corpses get found on the crapper with pants around ankles. And if you've got a severe case of opiate-related constipation I would expect your risk to be quite a bit higher than average.

When I was writing my opiate book, I remember seeing that DJ Screw was found in the bathroom. Given that he was using large quantities of sizzurp and was pretty overweight at the time, I suspect chronic constipation played a role in his demise.

I only hope that when it's my time to go I don't pass while passing, if you know what I mean. I don't want to go gently into the afterlife with a turd hanging out of my ass if I can avoid it.
 
There really needs to be a new revolutionary OTC product to counteract opioid constipaton. I know there are certain things to help in case of emergency but there needs to be a daily supplement to prevent stop ups in the first place. Trust me I have tried every OTC product that exists and nothing can really come close to fighting opioid constipation.
