Can opiate constipation kill you?

bud bout a year and a half ago. I went 13 days without poo pooing on day 5 i was taking light laxitives DIDN't work. Then day 10 i started drinking that lemon lime drink that the doc says you drink this you need to be near the shitter. Well i drank one bottle on day 10, one of 11, 12th i just layed in my bed eatting somas xanax morphine and perc 10s for the serious amounts of pain. And the girl that i was with left bc she thought i was going to die. Then this other lady of mine came by and yes this is damn 13 now and i'm still in the bed. And they made me go to the hospital. I said wait let me try to use the bathroom one more time that didn't work i just wanted to really eat tons of my meds. really i took a hand full of morph percs and xanax with 2 somas and rode to the spital ;) and after xrays cat scans they gave me 1 perc 5 and said Mr. ______ u are going to be here from bout 7 to 8 days we have to do surgery on you now. I had wires growing in and around and through my small intest. so i couldn't shit. And all the laxitives and other shit was just chillin couldn't do anything. So, they had to cut the wires out then they cut a hell of a lot of my small intest. and they said that shit was floating around me body everywhere bc it would break out the intest. I know this sounds weird. But i guess this is what 10 years of opiate of all other meds. have to do on a lil person like me. Doc told me I was full of shit. And the operation he said usually took 4 hours he said every 1 in a half hour i would wake up screaming and shit and they had to dose me back up 4 times in all. they said they gave me so much morphine and Dauladid they was scared of giving me each shot bc i weight 140 at the time. The surgery ended up taking 8 in a 1/2 hours. And they said they have never seen anyone wake up in surgery and could handle all those opiates.. Now i have 3 wires growing in me i have another damn surgery in a few weeks. same shit. :(

^Thanks for posting that. So there we have it... 13 days is absolutely too long to go without a bowel movement. I think the seven days that is commonly recommended to see a doctor after is pretty sound advice, then. I think the problem can probably be dealt with successfully before it gets to this point if a determined effort is made early enough in the chain of events...

Wow what a story - a really horrible one and I wish that on no one. I'm not trying to be a smart arse and maybe after that operation its too late but did you make an changes in your life style in the way you eat do you take an vitamins or anything to prevent it happening again, I've heard it can really make a difference eating right.
Something bad happened to me too, I collapsed and was rushed to hospital back in the early 90s, everytime I ate I threw up but I was young and knew nothing about what Heroin could do to your bowels. THANKFULLY after a few hours of excruciating pain at the ER while they were deciding what to do with me, I finally went to the washroom like I never have or ever will again - I honestly thought my insides fell out, it scared me to death. The doctor was such an arsehole he told me you can stay here but there will be no pain meds for any procedure we do on you. Yes you piece of crap, that's why I came here in an ambulance, for f**ing pain pills. I was very ill any moron could have seen that, he sent me home a few hours later and I was still throwing up. It the only time I've been judged by health care for my drug use
I still suffer from stomach issues a lot, ironically they are worse when I stop using Heroin and just have my Methadone (50ml) than when I do both. I've been given rx Dicetel, its not a Laxative but it speeds up the way your waste is moved through your intestines. Problem is it takes a few weeks to work and you are only meant to take it when symptoms 'start' but when excruciating pain starts, few weeks might as well be a year away.
Hope things get better for you

miralax!!! its over the counter!!! just make sure you drink a lot of water with it! im on fent 100mcg every two days, and im regular every day from this!

it's not that expensive, and you wont have to strain, and for lack of a better word, it comes out nice and easy.... no more hemorrhoids..

Wow opiatesrus what a story. What do you mean wires in your intestine? like the shit looks like wires on a scan? As for me I finally went after alot of laxatives and then another enema and some digging with my fingers. I will be changing my lifestyle for sure.

My g-ma has miralax in her cab. 3 damn bottles of it. But i got to say when i went on my fent world. I would have a 75 mcg on and be chewing on a 50 or be wearing a 100mcg on one arm and a 75 mcg on the other and shit like a charm every morning. I got to say i nodded out a few times on the shitter on fent though Psuedosleeping is a beautiful thing.

Now i do take vitamins from Market America OPC-3 awesome product. But i got off morph and hydros and perks and that stuff said no to methadome and went to subs just taking 4 milli a day and down to 1 and still its fucking my tummy all up. Plus i take xanax also. but that has never messed my tumby or bowels.

I love all u bler's

I've worked with a number of people who've developed delirium / psychotic symptoms due to untreated constipation caused by opiate use. This can be easily misdiagnosed in emergency departments.

I've also worked with someone who almost died from an obstruction, followed by complications after surgery. His breath and sweat smelt like shit because he was so blocked up it was practically oozing out of his mouth and skin. He finally went to hospital when he started vomiting shit (I wish I was joking). It had been almost a month without a bowel movement at that stage.

The surgery to remove an obstruction is serious and the after-effects can be disturbing, even if all goes well. Constipation is not something to be ignored.

Miralax is okay, but it takes a long time to start working. It is not good for emergencies. Its hard to remember the dose all the time and once u get to using the bathroom regularly its easy to forget using it. Miralax tho should be a given. Still didn't work too well for me tho when I was on suboxone. Suboxone gave me much worse constipation than any other opiate.

I've had some horrific times related to whats being said in this thread. The worst is when you know you should go, but dont bother, get high, then it gets to the next morning, same thought process, then the need to go disappears.. a little later down the line its day 10 and you havent been. lots of laxatives and severe pain/pushing is what sorted it.

I take fibre pills every morning along with my multivitamins and go every day now (even when i dont need to, just make the effort). the problems arise when you 'miss a day'

BAM! Spot on what happened to me. Usually when I feel it I go, but for some reason I was in the exact same situation as you described. Hadn't gone in 4 days. Took 2 days off of opiates, woke up and an hour later had to shit. Thought id do it in a bit, but got high and couldn't. Then I had to wait another few days. Man terrible. I didn't know anyone else did the exact same thing as I did. hahah

Lesson for the day: Listen to your bowels!

The stomach pains are the worst. I'm on suboxone and I tend to take it right when I wake up, therefore I can't shit for the day. I've made a thread on BL before about Opiate Constipation. My longest was 2 weeks and you guys were freaking out. I've had to obstruct with my finger and all that (I know, ewww), but now I'm mostly regular because I've actually been taking the Peri Colace my sub doctor prescribed. I'm so proud of myself - the past 3 days in a row I've had a proper shit! It's very rare for me now to poop two days in a row. So, Colace will do the trick. And now I wake up and try to poop before placing sub under my tongue.

Does anyone else get really bad constipation (and in turn, stomach cramps) from subs? My other friends on Subs say it's not so bad.

The longest I was on subs for was 10 days and no I didn't get constipation like you did. Methadone gives me the worst constipation, but everyone is different.

Generally speaking though, partial opiate agonists such as buprenorphine should cause less CNS effects including constipation in comparison to full agonists like morphine etc. However as I said before everyone is different. Try eating a high fiber diet and taking laxatives.... Good luck

are you serious, the person was vomiting shit? What was the consistency of it? It couldnt have been actual poop coming out of his mouth... Really? I mean, I guess I dont know, this is just the craziest thing i have read in awhile, wow.

And I hope the OP who started this thread is ok... He never checked back in :\

i've gone 16 days without taking a dump!! when i finally dropped a load, oh dear god!! I didnt know pain like that exsisted.

how good does it feel when you get it out, though? OMG, amazing. It might not be a pretty sight in the toilet, but wow. SIt down, you know its going to hurt, strain like you never have before for a long time... Feel it start coming and you gotta make the decision, pull back and quit or go with it. You decide to go with it and it just feels so much bigger than your butthole will allow, but you know it needs to go. So you push and feel your butthole expanding to monstrous proportions, pain, Pain, PAIN it builds and Builds And BUILD AHHHHHHHHHHHH and then it drops. OMG, that relief, though, wow. It is a great feeling.

Yes, vomiting fecal matter is what happens in cases of severe constipation or obstruction. The shit backs right up to the point it enters the stomach. Google it if you're feeling brave.

Was chatting to a doctor at my hospital today and he said he thinks fibre is the best treatment for constipation, even opioid-induced. Loads of patients are on opioids and he says it never fails for them! Best thing is fybogel (UK name, generic name is ispaghula husk), not sure of it is OTC or not, plus bran flakes in the morning and loads of water. It takes a few days to get through your colon, however, and isn't great one you are already bunged up - might need an enema or suppositories because if you are really constipated nothing you swallow can penetrate through it! Worth a try I reckon..
