Valproate is listed as a dangerous combination with all phens/trypts but I can't really find any information as to why. Does anyone know why this is dangerous or what complications there may be or will it simply prevent me from tripping altogether?

Hi and welcome to PD & BL!

Issues that should not be taken lightly are:

- the fact that you are prescribed valproate is an indirect contraindication i.e. having bipolar disorder and tripping is an increased risk, you would risk getting unstable and going into a manic or depressive episode.
- the above issue is a psychological one but similarly the same problem could arise pharmacologically: the drug might act less well and produce side-effects or other unusual adverse complications.
- in case you were considering it you should never discontinue the medication to be able to trip, that would produce new problems.

When I took anti-depressants, I kept tripping to almost zero - only did it a few times in a couple of years. The majority of that period I wasn't even on those meds but it just felt like the right thing to do even though I absolutely love tripping. Also I took low dose mirtazapine which is theoretically relatively pretty safe but still the principle applies.

What can be said in general is: Using drugs is always risky. If you don't want to run any risks whatsoever you should never use drugs.
You just ought to realize that for you those risks would be increased, and psychiatric medication interactions are notoriously unpredictable in a lot of cases. But just because it is hard to know, imagine, predict or explain what the interaction would look like precisely doesn't necessarily make it that much less of a problem.

Valproic acid is also used to treat epilepsy, and you definitely don't want to be taking any psychedelics in that case because they lower the seizure threshold making it more likely for you to suffer one.

I've been on depakote ER 500 twice a day, for a year, and never noticed any ill effects as long as I skipped my morning dose before dosing. I've even taken my night dose after my trip wis winding down with no I'll effects.

I think you guys are being a little close minded here: depakote is used off label more than most medications. It can be an adjunct to benzo therapy for anxiety, used for mild depression, medication resist depression, and many other psychiatric issues that shouldn't bar an individual from using psychedelics. After all, tripping can relight the fire of life in many of us and be quite a good thing for the psychiatrically ill.

Thanks Solipsis and thanks everyone else that's good to hear. I'm not bipolar and don't have any other mental issues though. I was diagnosed with epilepsy because I went cold turkey off benzos/ alcohol but didn't want to be labeled as a drug user so I didn't tell them that was the cause. I've actually found more information in this thread than anywhere else on the internet so thanks again guys.

^ that's kind of a common story here on BL. It's a hive mind of scientific, experimental, and anecdotal information that culminates to be one of the best sources you can find.

I'd like to formally welcome you to Bluelight Xandercrews :D
