can I control how I trip?

Dissociatives are capable of producing auditory hallucinations, and although they may not be direct synaestetic reactions, they do correlate and respond to external stimuli like music. Also, I am capable of concentrating my gaze on shadows or darkness in the midst of a DXM trip and conjuring many shades of cold colors, from royal blues to mauves and violets, and even shades that seem more like ultraviolet, but dark and eerie.

There are only three things you can control when you trip:
1. Substance: Don't take bad drugs. Try to find some conventional psychs, or grow some cactus or DMT containing plant. Don't take acid that is off color or shrooms that look moldy. "When in doubt, chuck it out."- a BL-er who is smarter than me.

2. Set: Don't trip if you aren't in the right mind set. IMO it is okay to drop spontaneously, or even when you are in an off mood, but never drop if there are unresolved issues on your mind, unless you are doing so for the purpose of confronting those issues.

3. Setting: Don't trip in unfamiliar areas. Don't trip around people you don't know. Don't trip if you have commitments or appointments to keep. etc.

Other than that, you bought the ticket, so take the ride. Even if it is a rough experience you will be a better person for it. I cherish my bad trips.

Oh, artic, I disagree.. While it's definitely a good idea not to take drugs that look sketchy, I think that any sort of drug can give a learning experience. RCs are new and still relatively lacking research in terms of physiological effects. Still, I'm sure they can be of benefit. I also think that there is no possible mindset that could make a trip not okay. And I personally adore tripping in settings that are completely new, even malignant.

You have the power to control every single aspect of your trip, not three certain things that are only external..

^ Not everyone has the luxury of being able to trip on anything at anytime. I have experience and I'm comfortable with that for the most part but many people are not. Some people have pre existing psychological issues and cannot "control every single aspect" of their trip. That isn't good advice as it encourages people to treat psychedelics like all other recreational drugs and they are definitely not like other drugs. They definitely can cause issues if used irresponsibly.

I'm also going to disagree and say that not every drug can give a learning experience, at least not in the same way that psychedelics can. Psychedelics can cause ego death, they can cause you to see everything that is going wrong in your life, they can give you realizations, I can go on and on but these sorts of things don't generally come from a night of drinking, just saying.

There are definitely mindsets that can mess up a trip.

Bad trips aren't messed up trips.

I in no way mean that drugs like alcohol can be used in such a revelatory way; I have been under the impression that discussion of psychadelics was allowed here only.

Furthermore, I'm a clinically diagnosed schizophrenic, and I've found that my psychoactive drug use has been a major player in the development and reactions I have regarding my "illness", all of them beneficial. Of course irresponsible and indulgent recreational use of these powerful substances can have very adverse effects, but, excuse me for my possible naivete, I was under the belief that the people on this site are educated and responsible denizens, who would not abuse the potential of these drugs for such frivolous pursuits.

To reiterate: EVERYONE has EVERY ability and ALL the power in the world to control EVERYTHING that happens in their own mind.

Yeah but that's on DXM, he's asking about diphenhydramine. Benadryl is not a dissociative, it's a deliriant, and it doesn't cause either of those effects.

Hmm, my mistake. Deliriants don't really ever give me hallucinations that interact with external stimuli; mostly rather just stemming from my unconscious.
