Can drug dogs detect hydrocodone/acetaminophen pills?

This is a question I really need answered and am having a very difficult time finding an answer to. I've seen mixed information on the internet, primarily yahoo answers and the like. However, I'd like some stronger confirmation from a more reliable source rather than some random person on yahoo answers. The majority of the answers I've seen say NO, drug dogs CANNOT detect hydrocodone/acetaminophen pills since they are prescription drugs, and the dogs are trained to detect illegal substances rather than prescription drugs. However, the pills certainly do have a smell, as I've noticed often times before when I've crushed them up. Obviously dogs have very sensitive noses and can detect most any smell, so I guess the real question is, are drug dogs trained to alert the officers of the presence of hydrocodone and/or acetaminophen?

It takes a crap load of time to train a dog to alert to anything at all. CAN they be trained....of course. Would anyone in their right mind waste the time and effort to do so considering all the other more important issues to train dogs for like bombs and heroin....no.

My dog, of course recognizes vicoden....but thats because hes special and we practice a lot
 
Considering it's most commonly used medically, no, I very much doubt they have dogs trained specifically for it, unless they're looking at massive imports coming from an pill press, for example.

If I remember correctly, dogs can only be properly trained on one drug scent. So as NOLA said, I can't imagine any sort of situation where a dog would be specially trained to sniff out a prescription drug.

Also, no questions of this kind are allowed anyway. They are very hard to answer for sure (which is probably why you've gotten such mixed answers elsewhere on the Internet).
