I was jsut wondering if dogs can smell out x. I know that police dogs are specialized somewhat (i.e. bomb detection, drug dogs). Are police dogs specialized to particular drugs? Or are they all encompasing. I dont think this subject is against the rules but if it is, my apologies. Just curious as me and my friends debate this alot. Maybe this belongs in drug culture?

Yes, dogs can be trained to sniff out anything including mdma. Smell your pill next time.

Thanks, but can one dog be trained to smell out multiple substances. I'm sure it can be, but I just want to know for sure. Its not worth the risk anyway i guess. And why should i smell my pill next time?

So you can smell that it smells :) Anything that you can smell a dog can smell better.

It depends whether the dog is trained or not, and how well.

Yeah, but it doesnt mean a dog can distiguish it from other substances. I surely wouldnt be able to tell the difference between ibuprofin, pma, mdma, or many other things for that matter. Maybe it smells close enough to some common substance that detection would be impracticle. Dogs have much better sniffers than us, of course. But that doesnt necissarily mean that it is able to distiguish the smells ANY substance. I'm sure a dog wouldnt be able to distiguish the smell of tupperware from the plastic of a cd case. Even dogs have limitations. I'm just curious if x is one of them.

I've always wondered if perhaps the dogs could/are being trained to smell the things people use to cloak the smell of illegal substances like coffee etc...

I doubt it. Lots of everyday folks would start being searched. I dont think the police could justify searching Joe Schmoe cause the dog turned a positive on coffee possesion. Smells like one hell of a law suit. heh

Man there is a BIG difference between most Ecstacy pills and Ibuprofin!

Ecstacy has a very unique smell in 95% off the pills.

I'm not disagreeing with you. If i had to guess, i would say that dogs could smell out rolls. I'm just trying to find out for sure.

i'd say it's a 50/50% chance getting a dog that can smell MDMA. i say this b/c i know for sure dogs are trained to detect bud, cocaine, meths, opium/heroin. and i can say for sure that coke, meth, heroin and ecstacy pills are usually cut with other substances.

i bet an experienced dog over time will be able to recognize some of the more common substances powderish drugs are cut with, thus if a mass quantity of "e pills" were by a dog i'm sure the mutt would be able to pick up and recognize the similar "cutting adgents'" smell that it has been praised for by finding it in previous succesful busts. so ya i hope my logic is understood

ps: you better not be tryin to collect advice for illegal purposes :p

Pills, even to humans, have a distinctive smell close up. To a dog who has thousands of times the "smell power" of us, it'll smell that distinct at a distance of 10ft and through a plastic bag (which aren't air tight).

Some people say "stick them in a jar of coffee" or "run the bag in chilli powder" to mask the smell. It doesn't work. If it did drug smuggling would be way easier. When you walk into a kitchen and there's pasta, vegetables and meat being cooked you can tell all three of those things are being cooked because you can tell the smells apart. Well a dog can do that too, even with more pungent things.

Most dogs are trained for cocaine, cannabis and heroin (heroin smells very much like vinegar due to the acetic anhydride used) but soem will be trained for meth or MDMA and can pick it up. Chances of you getting one of those dogs? Very low. Most police dogs (even thoses seen to be used as sniffer dogs) don't smell you, the police look at how you react. The little beagle dogs are the good smellers, be worried if you see them!

But as long as you don't look worried, right? %)

In answer to the original question, I've seen numerous people get caught with pills at various parties where sniffer dogs have been present. Partly because of the dogs and partly because they've been dobbed in by rival dealers. Arguably you'll be ok as long as you only have enough for yourself - i.e. 2 or however many you do. I can't speak much for this advice as I've never had illegal drugs at the parties with sniffer dogs.

^ Yes, probably, as plastic is porous. I'm not 100 % on that but there's also the problem that if at any stage in the vacuum sealing process, MDMA particles made it onto the outside of the bag (very likely), they'd be detectable. Long story short - don't take chances.

^ i guess not if they are airtight and u clean the outside!! hmmm makes me wonder if i should get one of those vacuum seal machines i saw on an infomercial =D

How airtight are condoms? I realise there is still the issue of drug particles on the outside, but what if you stick your gear in there, wash it off and do what you normally do?

There are chemicals online that can completely rid products and areas completely of odors, with some sort of guarantee, i wouldnt want to be the one who tries this.
Just curious isnt latex medical gloves a good solution? Considering they protect users from microscopic organism's. Might be off wall but to me it makes sense.

*of course the latex woud have to be sealed airtight*

^^ A molecule of MDMA is tiny compared to a bacterium, so even if a glove stops bugs, it could still let MDMA through.

Almost everything lets through some of the molecules and it only takes a few. I just went through customs (I'm in an airport right now) and got randomly stopped by a security guard who swabbed my bag (inside and out) and my shoes with a cloth and then put it into a Mass Spectrometer (I asked if thats what it was and he said yes). He was only looking for explosive residue, thought I'm not carrying drugs either anyway, and I was clear (obviously), but if he were looking fr drugs and I had them I would have imagined he'd have caught me. Only need a couple of billion molecules, and thats nothing.

Just to be anal dogs actually have about 50 time the 'smell power' of us. Humans have about 5 million scent receptor cells where dogs have about 200 million.

But yes none the less there smelling ability is nothing short of awesome, and will detect drugs they have been trained to detect.
