can dogs smell test kits?

it's unlikely.
both sulfuric acid and formaldehyde have strong smells, and *you* could definitely smell them. actually, their vapors are dangerous and in a lab they'd always be handled in a fume hood.
a dog could definitely smell them, possibly even if the bottle was closed. sulfuric acid has illegal uses and drugs are commonly formed as sulfates, but i'm not sure what the chemistry behind drug dogs is.
it seems unlikely that at least an ordinary drug dog would be trained to smell sulfuric acid, and at any rate it is not illegal for you to have a test kit. be aware of what rights you may still have, and *do not* carry anything illegal at the same time as a test kit. test kits aren't expressly illegal, and you wouldn't want to be caught with something that was because of one.

I'm surprised that you have been hassled for 5HTP. I travel a lot in Asia, and because of my profile I usually get torn-apart by customs. They usually just pick up the bottle of 5HTP, look at the label, and throw it back in the bag.

well, if it was sealed there obviously shouldn't be a problem.
but around here crystal is usually sold in gelcaps so i'd expect problems with loose 5-htp or even a bottle of caps, if i was trying to get into a party or something.
like, if the bottle's open, it's still caps of white powder... it'd be nice if the manufacturers printed the caps or something.

Just a little warning about 5-HTP - I had a drug dog go straight at my bag with a bottle of 5-HTP in it, and freak out. The cops here are stupid and immediately assumed it was E. Not a big deal legal wise, but we were detained for almost an hour & the cops tried to insinuate we were planning to sell them as E at a party we were going to. I would have caused some serious trouble for those assholes, but my friend had a bowl on him, so not much we could do. Just be aware 5-HTP smells like *something* dog have been trained to go for, and as anyone who has ever taken it knows it has a pretty strong sent to begin with!
dogs are trained for certain scents, I have experience here. if they are trained to find the kits, they will. But these guys aren't training their dogs to find the kits.
Also as for the dog who found the 5htp, he probably was actually alerting due to other residue on your bag from real stuff, but you were lucky in that you had none on you at the time. Had you put X or other drugs in that bag or container, EVER?
