Can Benzos lower opiate tolerance?

Hello. Im curious if benzos can lower opiate tolerance to any extent. If they can, should they be administered just before a does of opiates or does not matter...anyone can supply any information on this topic? thanks

nope, BENZo's cannot lower Opiate tolerance...
i have heard Ketamine can lower tolerance, but i dont think there much truth to it..

There is probably actually some truth in K reducing opioid tolerance. There's a fair bit of medical interest in this, and while controlled studies have shown mixed results, I've seen some astonishing case reports. Typically the doses of K used are pretty small, just below the effects threshold.
I have only tried this once, shooting a tiny bit of K (~10mg) along with my normal dose of heroin (one bag out of a previously tested batch.) I OD'd that time -- didn't stop breathing, but came close. So either it was an abnormally strong bag (odd since the stuff I get is generally quite consistent quality-wise) or the K potentiated it.

I agree with blah, taking benzos before doing the H significantly increases the intensity of the smack.

Does anyone know if benzos also potentiate opiate analgesia as well? In other words is their some sort of actual biochemical synergy occuring or is the opiate+benzoed state just more fun.
The only reason one might suspect DXM to potentiate opiates is that it is related to ketamine, MK-801 and other similar compounds. There have been scientific studies showing these do reduce opiate tolerance (tho these are almost invariably about pain not euphoria). As for DXM who knows. I wouldn't count on a direct analogy holding.
Secondly the negative side effects for DXM seem to kick in at a fast enough rate vs. dissosiative effect it might not be usefull.
Thirdly I believe DXM inhibits CYP2D6 so it may very well reduce the effects of the pre-opiods (i.e. codeine and potentially hydrocodone and oxycodone).

To nitpick a little we should be more carefull about tolerance vs. potentiation. For instance barbituates potentiate alcohol but they do not lower alcohol tolerance (in fact they display cross tolerance). What blah is pointing out, and what the original poster was undoubtedly interested in, is that benzos potentiate opiates.
The dissosiative anastetics (NMDA blockers) actually
reduce opiate tolerance. The paper quoted showed that mice administered these compounds concurrently with opiates developed less tolerance to the opiate than those administered only opiates. This decrease in tolerance included a decrease in withdrawal effects. This is of particular interest as these compounds actually potentiate the desiered effects of opiates so we are seeing true tolerance reduction, not just blocking of action.
Interestingly enough there are claims melatonin reduces morphine tolerance. The study is interesting but doesn't seem convincing to me. On the other hand melatonin is easily availible cheap and safe so if you are a regular abuser why not try it (note I don't think potentiation was claimed).
Actually I just found another study suggesting that valium actually does reduce tolerance if taken chronically with opiates (at least to withdrawal and pain effects). Once again the evidence here isn't overwhelming but it looks like benzos do indeed reduce opiate tolerance.
Does anyone know how the RAVE theory explains all these tolerance reducing mechanisms which don't block receptor stimulation? I guess NMDA receptors have some role in how a cell self-regulates but I am not that clear about this.
Now to bitch!! If you have an = followed by a d in your url it gives you a damn smiley face and breaks it. I had to go replace it by a %64 to get it to work.

Would you want to take DXM to lower your tollerence for opiates? I would hope not, these two drugs simpley do not compliment each other. Cough Syrup and Opiates...ugh give me a break,
This actually works real good as you don't use a lot of cough medicine for it to actually take affect. It's not like you're feeling the affects of the DXM. You just double the recommended dose and it should drop your tolerance down pretty nice.
To stay on topic benzos DO complient opiates nicely. If you don't take benzos to the point where amnesia sets in and don't overdo the opiates you should be fine.

I have to disagree with you blah on the DXM. I'm not crazy about mixing dxm and opiates but DXM does lower ones tolerence , by taking the normal dose you could take for a cough prior to use. It might not always be worth it but many find it a godsend if you have a crazy tolerence. I have actually heard of heroin being cut with ativan sometimes.

DXM does work great with opiates. As a previous poster said, you are not taking enough to even cross the thresh hold of a DXM intoxication, but are taking like 30mgs or so. There has been studies to show this.
Also DXM can be aquired in a pill form or easily taken out of over the counter cough syrup.
