So xmas is almost here and i want to know what movies are out that might be worth watching in between all the great festivities.... Im mostly interested in comedies, thrillers, horrors, romcoms (for the missus) & perhaps anything else remotley interesting, nothing with subtitles or well depressing though....
what are your suggestions ?

Not The Usual Suspects that's for sure! I watched it the other day and it's fucking shite. The producers tried to be clever but mixed up the definitions of clever and needlessly confusing the day they wrote the script. I could tell the *amazing* plot twist from the fucking trailer :|

Is Dead Man's Shoes the revenge one where the guy comes back from the army and kills all those drug dealers who had been bullying his brother? If it is, it's the film some ket head on the train home from fabric told me about haha! I've been dying to see it ever since he told me about it :(

Are you dumb, Christmas isn't about those kind of movies. It's all about the Christmas Vacation.

The Usual Suspects is great!

One of my all-time favorite movies is: The Counte of Monte Cristco (although i'm not sure it's Christmas related in any way, mind you)

Silent Night,Deadly Night - A horror movie about a guy that dresses up as santa at christmas time and runs around with an axe chopping people up.A merry christmas indeed 8o

Scrooge - Comedy starring Bill Murray. He plays a mean and nasty TV executive who may learn about the true meaning of christmas.A re-working of a Christmas Carol.

Bad Santa - Billy Bob Thorton as a foul mouthed drunken thief who gets a job as Santa at a shopping centre.A very rude, fun comedy.

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation - Comedy starring Chevy Chase & Randy Quaid. The Griswalls family have a Wacky christmas adventure.

Why you dont use Google beyond me.

But we all know there is only 1 christmas movie : 'The Sound of Music' !
Or if u have a rebellious streak : head over to the 'disturbing movies' thread.
be prepared to projectile vomit (a very festive activity).

The Homecoming was the second movie (after 1963's Spencer's Mountain) based on Earl Hamner's autobiographical writings about love, pride, faith, and survival in rural America during the Great Depression. The Homecoming introduced the Walton family, a 1930s mountain clan living a hardscrabble existence that forces patriarch John Walton (Andrew Duggan) to seek work, far from home, in the city. When John fails to return home, as promised, on Christmas Eve, his iron-willed wife Olivia (Patricia Neal) keeps a lid on their children's worry. Oldest son John-Boy (Richard Thomas), who privately dreams of becoming a writer but worries about disappointing his parents, is dispatched to find his dad. Graceful yet harder-edged than the subsequent TV series The Waltons (which recast several characters and ran for nine years), The Homecoming reveals, albeit understatedly, much about the pain of poverty even as the family draws strength and closeness through endurance. --Tom Keogh

http://www.amazon.com/One-Magic-Christmas-Mary-Steenburgen/dp/B0001I55YMGrab an econo-pack of tissues, gather your loved ones around a cozy television, and bring on the hot cocoa--it's time for a dose of Christmas spirit. The tender and charming Mary Steenburgen (Parenthood) dons a sour disposition in her role as Ginny Grainger, a woman who finds little joy in life lately--let alone in the impending holiday season. Money is tight, her husband (beautifully downplayed by nice-guy Gary Basaraba) lost his job, and the family must move out of their house. Ginny cannot even bring herself to say, "Merry Christmas," despite her family's enthusiasm about the big day. With help from Ginny's brave and loving daughter (sweetly performed by Elisabeth Harnois) and a Christmas angel named Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny undergoes a life-altering experience à la It's a Wonderful Life. The result? Happy endings, hugs and kisses, pass the tissues.
Not a light holiday entertainer by any means, the plot verges on depressing at times, as the family struggles through money issues and the tedium of daily suburban survival. While handled fairly subtly, some of the bridging story--including a shooting, a kidnapping, and a drowning--might prove disturbing to children under 6 years old. And really: if the somber Harry Dean Stanton (Paris, Texas) repeatedly appeared in your neighborhood, cloaked in a cowboy hat and overcoat, would you allow your kids outside? Still, a well-made favorite to cherish. --Liane Thomas

comedy: "just friends"
takes place in new jersey suburbs during christmastime. this movie is so funny. it may seem like a 'chick flick' but after the first few minutes it turns into a genuine comedy. definitely has lots of laugh-out-loud parts.

wait. is the Black Christmas that comes out on 12/25 a remake of this?

Yeah. And it's supposed to be crap. So if I were you I'd just watch the original. It has Margot Kidder in it anyway. What more could you ask for? =D
