Hello BLer's, I was wondering if anyone knows about this "California Poppy Extract". Has anyone used this? What are the benifits/Effects. Also is the plant related to the Opium Poppy therefor possibly yielding similar effects? Thank you to all that respond before hand.

It's not related to the opium poppy any more than any poppy is. Like they are in the poppy family but there are like 800 species in the poppy family :) The alkaloids in California poppies are different. I have used California Poppy extract. It seems to affect different people differently and vary depending on the batch, like any plant. Some people say it did barely anything to them. It's pretty different and not nearly as strong as the opium poppy but it's still a sort of sedative/depressant. I was using it for sleep (during opioid withdrawal).

Here's a thread I started when I first started taking it:
California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

Thank you very much for your relpy, i had no idea there were so many species of poppy. Also thanks for the link!

Yeah you need to buy a type of poppy in the "Papaver Somniferum" family; that's the opium poppy.Just order it from any decent gardening store, they're a popular plant, although I believe it's illegal in the USA.

Edit: when you said "extraction", did you mean pricking the pods for the raw opium, or making a tea, or something? I believe both are highly illegal, but in many countries it's legal to grow the plant itself. If this is your plan, you will need a LOT of plants; yields are small per pod.

I think the OP means the "extract" liquid you can get at health food stores. I have tried it for migraines it didnt do much just tasted gross. I mean I have tried the CA poppy stuff. Then again I have had Rxs for pain for a few years off and on so nothing natural seems to help with sleep
