California is collecting between $50 million and $100 million a year in sales taxes from medical marijuana, according to the California Board of Equalization, confirming an estimate previously published in an economic analysis by California NORML.

The numbers were also independently confirmed by patient advocacy group Americans for Safe Access.

The state's retail market for medical marijuana has surpassed $1 billion per year, according to California NORML estimates, with a total adult use market of $6 billion.

An initiative to legalize and tax cannabis for adult use will be on this November's ballot in the Golden State.

Marijuana opponents, led by Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley, have tried to choke off the state's lucrative medical marijuana market by claiming that all marijuana sales are illegal.

The stand stands to lose tens of millions of dollars in sales tax revenues and millions more in enforcement costs if Southern California's dispensaries are closed, according to Cal NORML Director Dale Gieringer.

"Marijuana prohibition is a losing proposition for California's taxpayers," Gieringer said. "On one hand it costs the state to arrest, prosecute, and imprison marijuana offenders, and on the other it deprives the state of valuable tax revenues."

Adult use legalization could net the state some $1.4 billion in revenues, according to California's Legislative Analyst's Office, or more than $1.2 billion by California NORML's estimate.

Image 50 states? =D

dude, this will pass. I will for sure send you one of my "legalize ganja" shirts once I make them. main stream media is behind us for some reason (probably because they think they'll make money on it)

Fooowkin 'ell!
That's a good chunk of cash for the gov. - Hopefully they'll put the money to good use too! Like funding science more, alternative energy etc.
You'd imagine when a figure of money that size comes up, politricksters would be salivating with their tongues hanging out, wide-eyed and they'd bite that bone as hard as they could...

Hopefully they'll let greed control them for once =D

I am pro-legalization and everything, but 100 million in California is kind of a drop in the bucket. They had a 60 billion budget deficit. I guess it's something. Sorry to be a downer.

$1.2 billion > $100 million.

It really is a business in California; it's an enormous cash crop. No, it won't get California out of the hole entirely, but it's a great cause that will put a bigger dent in our deficit than these numbers reflect.

I still think it should not be subject to sales tax for medicinal cannabis patients (as other prescription drugs are not) but if marijuana is legalized, tax it like alcohol and cigarettes, and watch California's coffers grow. :)

Why trip on it being taxed when bought or sold? We need to pay for roads and schools, yes? You can grow it tax free if so inclined.

yeh seriously, people need to get off their high horses and think about the facts..

You can grow a veggie patch and not pay tax for lettuce, tomato, cucumber, whatever. OR you can buy it from a store and pay tax on it.

The money gets politicians and some citizens behind the legalization.

think about how much money they would save from releasing all those prisoners
additionally cops would be fighting more serious crime lowering crime rates
furthermore less crime would b committed because more people will be high and less people would b drunk which causes crime to skyrocket
