I've been drinking the notorious calea zacatechichi tea about once a week for a couple of months now. Not the worst-tasting thing I've ever gotten down, as I've endured large amounts of cough syrup and cactus juice before. But it's still pretty damn bitter. Now, calea z. is also known as the 'dream herb'. It's said to affect your dreams, make them more vivid and easier to recall, and even make them lucid. I've been trying to have a lucid dream for a while but so far, to no avail.

Anyway, I've sprinkled as much as 2g of calea into tea before, and noticed a slight alteration in mood. I become more relaxed, but I also feel a bit strange and uncomfortable. Colours seem slightly more vivid and there's a general trippy feel to the atmosphere. It definitely has some subtle effect on my dreams.

Now, yesterday I decided to see what would happen if I smoked it instead. Me and my roommate went outside and spent an hour and twenty minutes getting through 9 bowls for him, 6 for me - and I also drank some tea. We estimate he had about 2.7g, and I had maybe 4.4g in total.

On his sixth hit, my roommate said that he'd just crossed over in much the same way you cross the threshold with weed - bam, you're high. Needless to say, I was quite surprised, because calea is not supposed to be hallucinogenic.

By my sixth hit, we were both noticing how chilled out we were, and how defined the colours in the night sky were. It was sort of like being stoned, but subtly distinct from it. Anyway, we decided that if this amount wouldn't give us lucid dreams, nothing would, and decided to go to bed.

I didn't get lucid dreams. But I woke up three hours later to what I can only call a +1. My headspace was weird, dissociated, something was happening. I definitely felt high. The dreams I had were also drastically different.

I'd last had cactus two days prior, and had vowed not to take any drug again for two months (beautiful experience, but time for a little break) so I was a bit annoyed with myself for getting high just two days later.

Anyway, this was a very surprising experience for me. Does anyone else have any strange experiences with calea z., or anything that might explain this phenomenon? Not much is known about the plant.

I usually do bong rip after bong rip just prior to going to sleep. I know I have smoked enough when I "cross over" into this distinct calea z headspace... not quite normal wakefulness, not quite drowsiness, not quite a high... just a distinct headspace. I don't know what to call it. I haven't smoked the amounts you describe before, but I can easily imagine that were I to increase my dose, I would experience the same. I wonder if calea z. has very minute contents of a moderately potent alkaloid, moderate contents of an alkaloid of low potency, or perhaps a fair content of some terpenoid with psychoactive properties. I definitely think it should be investigated.

Me too. It's not a pleasant headspace though, so I won't be the one doing it.

Apparently the Native Americans used to smoke up to 15 grams of Calea. Balls of steel. The effects lasted about eight hours for me, and I wouldn't want to be in that dissociated state of mind for so long, even asleep. It's disorienting and unpleasant.

Anyway, it's cool to know we're not the only ones. Calea must be a psychedelic substance of some kind that's slipped under almost everyone's radar, cops and psychonauts alike.

^^ Yep. I've given it to friends just to see the look on their faces when it hits their tongues. I know someone who regularly does DXM and has taken cactus juice, and he could not handle calea. Anyone interested: You Have Been Warned.

Yeah, I think I'll stick with smoking it. Just have to be careful not to get any smoke in your eyes - for some reason it stings like a bitch.

Honestly, how do you people get this down? The herb is unbelievably foul. The smoke is even worse, even smoked through a bong.

Diluting it with lemon and sugar makes it more manageable. Beyond that it's sheer willpower, which I'm afraid to say doesn't pay off for me.

And yeah, somehow, smoking it is even worse. Bitter and a much nastier burn than weed.

To native Americans not having scales... yah... maybe I shouldn't believe everything I hear on the internet.

just eat melatonin every night before bedtime (and some B6 and maybe other B vitamines) and I promise you that you will be dreaming a lot in a couple of weeks time.
