After getting off opiates, I have dealt with obscene amounts of anxiety, that just never goes away... I have been trying various remedies here and there, and I tried taking calcium and magnesium a while back (supposed herbal remedy). It worked?!?! I know, I don't really buy it either, but I have felt 10x less miserable the last week. Anyone else tried this or been here before?

Try posting this in Healthy Living Bro ; )

* edit * Yes, I've found calcium useful for a myriad of purposes. Magnesium is said to be effective in helping anxiety, and some of the physiological effects (affects ?) that come with agitation/anxiety & on a somatic level.

magnesium is a muscle relaxant and NMDA antagonist so its supposed to help calm you down.

Magnesium is very effective, although I wouldn't consider it as effective as a benzodiazepine.

Magnesium deficiency can also cause more than just anxiety...

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include: hyperexcitability, muscle weakness and fatigue.[1] Severe magnesium deficiency can cause hypocalcemia, low serum potassium levels (hypokalemia), retention of sodium, low circulating levels of PTH, neurological and muscular symptoms (tremor, muscle spasms, tetany), loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, personality changes [2] and death from heart failure.[3] Magnesium plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism and its deficiency may worsen insulin resistance, a condition that often precedes diabetes, or may be a consequence of insulin resistance.[4] Defficiency can cause irregular heart beats.

i have found that benzos can actually make anxiety worse than it is. exercise and proper dieting is key to fighting anxiety and helping to prevent panic attacks.

magnesium was recommended by my doctor for the back injury i had years ago, and i still take it often. it's needed for many reasons including dna structure and enzymes, but also muscle contraction and relaxation.

i found when i couldnt sleep, even when i was in a mess of benzo wd, magnesium was always included in the OTC cocktail, along with valerian root and kava kava.

Well if you had a deficiency it would definitely make sense that it helped you out a lot it did for me to.

I occasionally take a calcium + magnesium powder supplement that you mix with water. I think its actually called "Calm."

When I take it I always do so about 30 mins before I try to sleep. I have a horrible generalized anxiety disorder and insomnia so, like CH said, its not going to be as affective as a benzo. At least in my case/experience because my anxiety is so severe.

Although I will say that the first few times I took it, it knocked me out pretty quickly. However, after taking it numerous times it stopped making me very drowsy at all. So I'm not exactly sure if that was just placebo or that I built a tolerance to it somehow.

I haven't taken it in a while, although it definitely is worth a try.
