Caffeine death sparks alert by Nottinghamshire coroner

I'm not remorseful because he had access to the information that could have saved him. ANYONE has access to the internet in the 2010s, and therefore anyone has access to Bluelight. He lacked the competence to utilize the harm-reduction services available to him, and it ended his life. Even if he didn't have access to any information about the caffeine powder product, he could have done cautious low-dose initial testing.

I'm remorseful when someone is a fully capable and responsible victim of something out of their own control.

The only reason our species even exists is for the cold and hard reality of natural selection. You all should be thankful that Mother Nature didn't have any sympathy for the humans that didn't have the sharpest wit and the quickest reflexes.

By the way, my argument remains for a DMT overdose, irregardless of the higher status it has in my own life. I resent the accusation of being biased toward users of drugs that I personally hold in high regard.

Just because the resources exist for this person to learn of said outcomes, does not mean that he was willfully ignorant. He probably is unaware and uninitiated with harm reduction protocol, and wouldn't know where to start learning about it. Additionally, not everyone has an interest in researching drugs online, possibly because of the stigma that drugs have in most societies. Therefore, someone with an open mind, that has already been initiated to the comparable innocuousness of illicit drugs in respect to their reputation will have a greater susceptibility to try to understand harm reduction techniques in the moderation of drug use.

Since the usage of caffeine pervades Western society, such that it is in your Sunday newspaper "funnies," it has a reputation for being innocuous. Indeed, there is a large amount of ignorance in respect to the harmful effects of caffeine, such that it can create temporary anxiety insomnia conditions, that can be misdiagnosed, because the caffeine user doesn't see their level of caffeine consumption as problematic.

The therapeutic index was estimated to be 100:1. This man took at least 32 dosage units (well, 34 with this energy drink). It could have been up to 60. This is well within the territory where people die, for most distributions of lethal effects that we could anchor to that particular LD:50.

so, upon initial investigation, I lol'd:

However, I subsequently serious'd, following further inquiry:

However, I'm neither as incisive nor insightful as my mimetic projection.

Well, someone died from caffeine, it must pose a significant health risk! I think we all know what needs to be done... Some serious lobbying to make this shit illegal. I don't want a deadly substance in the hands of my children! Let alone legally. And while we are at it, lets make Cannabis possession a capital offense! I hear it is a gateway drug to caffeine! Your kids will be smoking weed one day and the next they will be on the floor dead from an IV caffeine overdose. I think we all realize how serious this issue is.

whatever, a non-drug nerd with a little bit of alcohol in him... he could have been a smart motherfucker for all you know. 'tis too bad.

Wow how horrible. When I was very young and stupid I once took 5 or 6 "no doz" pills, in some weird and desperate attempt to rid myself of my normal mindset and get some sort of high. It was the worst night of my life and I thought I was going to die, Ive never been so sick or had so much stomach pain. Poor dude. :(

You just know these same users would be saying what a tragedy it was if someone died from overdosing on an illegal drug.

The biases are kind of funny around these parts.

You have a point, but if anyone took 32 pills in one go, or ingested 32g of amphetamine, I think most people here would have the same reaction.

Similarly, if this dude had taken just 1x, 2x or 4x the normal dose of caffeine, people would be a lot more sympathetic.

A lot of this is down to the 'Binge Culture' we seem to have in the UK: take as much as you can, whenever you can - whether it be food, money, drugs, alcohol, etc..

I don't like using the term, but it seem more prevalent with the lower-classes. It seems that, as they don't have as much in the way of material goods (or think they don't!) they develop a horde mentality where they take and consume everything they can get their hands on.

Slightly off topic, but there was a piece that links into this in NewScientist a few months ago. It suggests that because of the fact the average life-expectancy is shorter in deprived areas, people from these areas will feel that they have to get everything in life done quicker / faster / earlier. Hence the "I or this food/drug/etc might not be here for much longer, so must have it now!" attitude.

that makes favella sense

caffeine should be regulated in pure powder form (so people cant buy loads of it, often used to cut drugs or sell as fake legals these days) as most of the social problem drugs come in pure powders and this one is not different. poppy tea, and coca tea are easy to use responsibly (if you have self restraint-which is a skill you CAN develop), heroin and cocaine however...

This is scarily close to home for me, I live like a 10 minute drive from forest town. This is prime fucking evidence of the kind of people I have to deal with on a day to day basis. >_<

Most of Mansfield and its satellite towns are scary places…

^ your telling me bro, it's not a nice place itself. and the surrrounding areas are even worse, old shitty mining towns with barely any economy...

Then again, I feel ike a bitch for bitching, shit, it's not like i'm having to hustle every damn day just to put food on the table like some places in the world. Should be grateful for this shit. :/

But what I wanna say is, anyone who overdoses is a fool in my eyes, whether it be from 2 spoonfulls of caffeine or slamming a gram of heroin. Feel sorry for the people who deserve it, that didnt't bring it upon themselves. If I ever topped myself through OD, i'd want no damn sympathy except for my family...

Sorry if i sound harsh, i don't wanna piss anyone off, just imo.

How about this: he took £3 worth of a party drug he purchased on the Internet. Given that he might have spent considerably more on other plant fertilizers, water softeners, bath salts etc., he may have thought "I figure 3 quid's worth should be all right." After all, how many people buy an envelope of "bath salts" and do the whole thing in an evening, or even in a go? And while some of them come back with horror stories, not many of them end up vomiting blood.

I agree that the guy made a really stupid mistake - but it was no dumber than the mistakes made by thousands of "legal high" customers every weekend. One might argue that it made even more sense: after all, caffeine has a long history of use and its pharmacology is well understood, which is more than you can say for the contents of many party powders.

Thank God he's out of the gene pool.

I'm sorry, but people kill themselves routinely when drunk in the dumbest possible ways. One of my acquaintances in university jumped through a giant glass window when he was piss drunk on a dare and it severed his femoral artery, and I could only feel so bad. I've been plenty drunk before, but I've never done anything like that.

and the answer is legalization. if A) labelling on the package includes necessary information to avoid death, like dosing information and LD50 (which most people will probably take a look at) and B) there may be a class/test required to get a license to purchase from the rec drug store (teaching things like what to do in emergency situations, addiction signs); that way anybody doing drugs will either have been tested on this knowledge or, if he wasn't, is at least most likely using with somebody who has... then we'd have a lot less health problems

A lot of people seem to have no compassion for this poor guy.

To bad he died. Didn't know pure caffeine was this strong. Never gave it any thought.

I once ate a bunch of caffeine pills, no health problems. I had a good tolerance at the time though.

ANY DRUG IN PURE CHEMICAL FORM needs to be dosed out with the utmost care in measurement and knowledge of proper dose. Unfortunately I think with drugs that require such small doses, and become widely available there will inevitably be a small number of people who run into problems.

Guessing that 2 table spoons of most drugs in pure chemical form is seriously dangerous.

How did he manage to eat 2 tablespoons of caffeine powder without bringing it straight back up? That sounds absolutely disgusting! I can't help but feel it was done as a dare or for machismo. I can't see any other reason to take that amount of ANY drug. I personally don't like the idea of taking Paracetamol too often because a normal dose is 1 gram, even though I know that in normal circumstances it is a perfectly safe amount to take.

The government really should try and learn from this and get some decent education programmes going on the dangers of all drugs no matter how socially acceptable or legal they are.

I have (usually intelligent) friends that still hold the belief that legal = safe, no matter how much I try and educate them on the subject. i.e/ One friend would have happily taken 7-8 party pills (containing BZP) in one night yet would never touch a 'drug' like MDMA.

It was a foolish thing for the guy to do but I can't help feeling sorry for him when he was quite possibly just a product of the government propaganda that would have you believe that because they have approved it for sale that it is free from risk.

Overdose on caffiene - Do Energy Drinks lack PROPER WARNINGS!

In another prime example of both how stupid people are individually, and how increasingly messed up society is getting....

A man ingested 70 energy drinks worth of caffeine at once. He overdose, and then died. While this was pretty stupid, what's worse is the public reaction. There are now people complaining that the energy drinks shouldn't be allowed to sell such a dangerous product.

It seems that people refuse to accept responsibility for their actions, or the actions of others. If you want to smoke, or take a ton of caffeine, or die from a water overdose, that's up to you. Soon everything will have a warning, and everything will have to be banned because of how bad it is for people.

It's a sad world we live in....

Lack of personal responsibility...for anything...is what's killing this country.

People blame TV for what their kids do....

People blame mcdonalds for making them fat...

People sue cigarette companies for giving them cancer...

Did someone hold a gun to your head and make you do all these things? No.

America is becoming just what the govt. wants us to be, a lazy, non-caring, fat, subservient collective that is easy to control and keep a finger on....

Wake up people.
