Caffeinated Booze Four Loko, Not Drugs, Sickened Students at Party

They're getting banned in NC soon too. So naturally I had to try it out. It tastes like someone poured kool-aid into a steel reserve malt liquor.

It packs a punch especially with the caffeine and really is rough on the stomach. I can only see this as being useful for pre-gaming, the high alcohol+caffeine makes it nice to kick off your night of drinking. But I doubt I could drink more than one without the caffeine having its way with my stomach. And I'm pretty tolerant of both alcohol and caffeine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will effectively ban the sale of beverages that combine caffeine and alcohol, including Four Loko and Joose, by ruling that caffeine is an unsafe food additive, according to Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).

In a press release, the Senator also announced that the Federal Trade Commission will notify manufacturers that they're potentially marketing the products illegally.

A spokesperson for the FDA would not confirm the release, adding that the agency announced a review of the products in November 2009. She could not comment on a projected date for completion of the review.

Schumer said in the release that the ruling, when it occurs, "should be the nail in the coffin of these dangerous toxic drinks."

On Monday, Connecticut Attorney General and the state's senator-elect Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg calling for the ban of the energy drinks.

And this week, the New York liquor authority and the state's largest beer distributors agreed to stop selling the drinks, according to the release. Oklahoma, Utah, Michigan, and Washington enacted similar bans on Four Loko after college students had fallen ill or died after drinking it.

For instance, an 18-year-old Long Island resident, Nicole Lynn Celestino, allegedly died in August of cardiac arrest after drinking four cans of Four Loko on top of a diet pill she had taken earlier in the day.

And the family of 20-year-old Jason Keiran of Florida is suing the drink maker over claims that it caused him to behave so erratically that he shot himself.

Four Loko contains 12 percent alcohol by volume, and is sold in 23.5-ounce cans.

How will this effect the bar industry? Are yagerbombs and redbull and vodka illegal now? This is a pretty silly, and ultimately ineffective bill, because someone can buy a six pack of beer, and a 4 pack of energy drinks at any convenience store.

But but but I like it when my blood's thin and sticky! I call no fair on the FDA cos this shit just doesn't fly right with me! They're not like them bad ass drugs like cannibus and amphetameens that just cause problems and addiction throughout America and don't harm or hook you anywhere near as bad, why can't I take them both in the same glass???

its a shitty addictive drug that makes people into knobends if they have to much which in the instance of four loko is an easy thing to do. if you want to party on a stimulant get some mdma or amphetamine, not drink shitloads of cafeine. stims should not be part of every day
 
Is it really that hard for people to get some redbull & vodka? (or w/e other alcohol) and get the same effects, plus to be honest sense redbull has a good amount of caffeine and when mixed with vodka (or another liquor) it will have the same effect as this "Four Loko" nonsense plus even more alcohol + caffeine depending how much alcohol you put in the drink which is usually more then this Four Loko nonsense.... anyways who the fuck drinks these stupid Energy + alcohol drinks like "Four Loko" anyways? you'll get a stomach ache from all the sugar before you get ridiculous drunk In My Experience..... This is just showing how the US gov't is taking away more and more of our freedoms everyday.... I don't understand how more of you are not completely upset about this assuming that most of us our the same in our political and policy making out views.


its like more and more of our freedoms are being taken away everyday.....and it seems like im the only one that passionatly cares and wants to do something to re-vamp our government....I just wish more people my age would feel the same as I do....But most 20 smoething year olds I know just say " Oh I don't give a shit about politics." Which is just basically saying they don't give a shit what all corrupt government is doing to this country;... I don't think you guys realize how the future of the US is going to be within the next 10 years... I hope to god im wrong but I see Hyperinflation in the US in the future which will in essence turn us in the Germany during the WWII aftermath period of time for example.......

Alcoholic energy drink boasts high sales despite risks

Albuquerque store owners that sell the malt-liquor-infused energy drink Four Loko are surprised that several state bans and a series of bad press have spurned curiosity about the drink.

“Everybody loves it,” Quarters Liquors’ manager Mike Walterscheid said.

Four Loko is sold in a 24-ounce can. It has 12 percent alcohol by volume. Guarana and taurine are added to give the drink its caffeine boost, which is equal to two cups of coffee.

Recently, the Four Loko’s maker agreed to stop shipping its product to New York. Utah, Oklahoma, Michigan and Washington. Ramapo College, in New Jersey, banned the substance after 17 students were hospitalized with alcohol poisoning after consuming too much of the caffeinated, alcoholic drink.

A University of Florida study found that students who mixed caffeine and alcohol thought they were capable of driving more often than those who drank non-caffeinated alcoholic drinks.

UNM student John Buric said he tried Four Loko after a friend brought a case over to his house.

“It tasted like an energy drink with basically no taste of alcohol,” he said. “I like it. It comes in good size can. It has a high amount of alcohol, and it’s cheap.”

You're very right. I avoid using caffeine daily (I probably consume caffeine in some form an average of once a week) for this reason. I do believe that Americans, and most Europeans, consume far too much of it.

My point wasn't that caffeine is benign, but that, given that you could just as easily chase a cup of coffee with a bottle of wine, I don't necessarily see the point in banning these drinks. Raising their retail cost, taking greater steps to restrict access to minors, sure, but an outright ban? I think that they're extremely unhealthy and don't ever plan to consume one myself, but if someone else wants to, I don't see it as my place, or as that of state governments, to stop them.

case and point. dumb kids are getting wasted off these things because theyre hip and cool and have caffeine in them. and the makers are BANKING. When dumb kids start getting fucked up on things they become illegal. Parents care too too too too much for their sweet little Jimmy, they dont want him snorting OCs and drinking 4 Lokos... no no. But mommy gets to pop 2 xanax when she feels anxious :D
