Chair.
He sits in the coffee shop,
milking the warmth from his full cup
he lights a cigarette
the cherry glows, a point of light
is light enough

then he meets eyes
with the child outside the cafe window,
and nods his head
at the big bright eyes with a smile
that just glows

then his mind drifts off, lost in
nostalgic thoughts and shimmering daydreams
of innocence lost and could-have-beens
that plummet him into the depths of depression
in their contrast with reality

then he pulls back
to the here and now that's never too far away
then he snaps out of it
to find his coffee's grown cold and his
cigarettes burned away

with just grains and ashes
left for him in a lonely, dimly-lit booth in a cafe
he can't help but think,
how on earth did I ever come to be this way?

then his mind drifts off, lost in
nostalgic thoughts and bright daydreams
of innocence lost and could-have-beens
that plummet him into the depths of depression
in their contrast with reality,

wound in a web of
elaborate complexities,
lost to the beauty of practicality
and simplicity...

this is persistently me lately. :\

another splendid read.

this is really nice. paints a very good picture. If I saw him in the cafe, I would want to talk to him.

Very touching and insightful.. "Lost to the beauty of practicality and simplicity" for all intensive purposes - i am.. sad really. Good work!
