my hypothesis is that BZP is like a stripped-down version of cocaine, which explains why traditional phenethylamine substitutions (methylenedioxy, 2-5 dimethoxy) don't produce the same effects when applied to BZP.

comparing the structures reveals some similarities.

left to right:

cocaine, bzp, carboxylated bzp

number 2 is N-methyl BZP

I don't think that BZP is much like cocaine. BZP is one of the most crappy stimulants I've ever tried.

Yeah, but at the same time traditional substitution patterns don't work with a lot of the ringed compounds. MDPV isn't much like MDMA at all now is it...
I suspect the ring substitutions not working is more to do with stearic hindrance.

I thought BZP had pharmacological effects almost identical to amphetamine?

Be interesting to know if that 3rd compound would be active though, even if it isn't due to the similarity to cocaine.

Always wondered what substituting on the piperazine ring would do to the effects...

Your picture of cocaine has different stereochemistry than the plant-derived drug. However, your observations about traditional PEA substitutions not working for BZP is supported by the non-transportability of BZP. I've posted the structure of the alkaloid below.

I've always wondered if BZP might have similar pharmacophoric regions to tropacaine. Probably not a question that's really worth considering in great detail since neither are reported to be all that good recreationaly, but it has been in the back of my mind for a while.

I know it's totally irrelevant, but the one time I tried BZP I could only compare it to cocaine.

A very mild high and was very chatty. Rather shit really, much like cocaine.
