ok so i just found this report on some UK government pricks trying to ban 4-mmc... looks like we wont be able to buy it on the net for much longer. anyway...

Call for ban on 'legal high' drug

So-called "legal high" drugs are popular with clubbers

Psychiatrists are calling for a drug being sold as "a legal high" to be made illegal. The drug, 4-MMC, has a similar effect to ecstasy and is being freely sold as a "designer drug" on internet sites. But a team of psychiatrists from Glasgow's Stobhill Hospital have warned it is addictive and can cause hallucinations and psychotic behaviour. The government said its drug advisers were aware of 4-MMC and the issue was due to be discussed next month.
The drug, which is snorted up the nose, has already been banned by a variety of countries, including Denmark, Finland and Israel. It is very similar to ecstasy. It gives people confidence and a feeling of euphoria, but it seems to be very addictive Dr Neeraj Bajaj, psychiatrist.

It is thought 4-MMC is based on cathinone, the active ingredient in the plant khat, commonly used as a stimulant in East Africa. The drug is sold by a host of websites and generally costs between £90 and £100 for 10 grammes - more than cocaine and ecstasy can often be found for.Psychiatrist Dr Neeraj Bajaj, who will be addressing the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Faculty of Addictions conference in Edinburgh on Thursday, said: "It seems to be a new drug that is being imported into the country.

"It is particularly attractive to people who do not want to break the law and buy drugs on the street. But it is just as dangerous."Dr Bajaj will tell the conference about a case he dealt with recently involving a young professional man.The married man started buying 4-MMC online and used it for 18 months.

By the end he was using it twice a week and had started experiencing hallucinations as well as agitation, excitability and mania.

Dependent

He was dependent on the drug and had to be admitted into a hospital psychiatric in-patient unit.

Dr Bajaj said he did not know how many people were using the drug in the UK, but said internet forums showed it was popular among young people who were going out to clubs and bars.

"It is very similar to ecstasy. It gives people confidence and a feeling of euphoria, but it seems to be very addictive."

The Home Office said the UK's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, which advises the government, was aware of 4-MMC and the issue of so-called legal highs was due to be discussed next month. (This Month)

A spokesman added: "If a compelling case is made for any 'legal high' to be added to the list of controlled drugs because they pose a significant health and social problem, we will not hesitate to seek Parliament's agreement to do so."

Well, we knew it was only a matter of time. The UK already has a catch-all clause declaring all possible compounds with an integrated phenethylamine backbone illegal (e.g. every compound ever created by Shuglin), so I assume that they will just add all beta-keto phenethylamines to that.

Anyone who likes the stuff better stock up now, because in a few weeks, you'll be SOL. It is really sad to see a novel compound heavily promoted in regular society as a "legal high," as various cathinones have been in the UK over the last two years. Once this happens, the compound attracts attention--and nothing on earth pisses off police and outrages legislators more than someone claiming to have found a "loophole" in their massive chemical prohibition laws.

^^ I'm sure it is ipso facto illegal in the US, as the analogue laws of the US state that any compound producing a phenomenologically similar effect to an illegal (scheduled) drug is itself considered illegal. Thus, in the US, by law there can be no such thing as a "legal high," because any chemical sharing an effect profile with an illegal drug (the 'high' part) is also illegal (although I suppose in some states, salvia divinorum could still be considered legal, because it is wholly unique in phenomenological experience and not specifically listed by some states).

Good riddance, let me tell you I can appreciate a broad spectrum of illicit chemicals but I really dislike how this one feels on my body and my mind. The physical load hints at toxicity to the point that I don't care anymore if there is enough valid evidence for it, and I can do without the addictive ego-masturbating pleasure high. Ugh.

good ridance i agree very addictive substance so my mates say just like coke a greedy drug me me me..!!:X

I got a feeling it'll be a bit longer than a few weeks though. It is pretty fucking addictive but u just gotta excert a bit of will power, doesnt look like thatll be much of a need soon though if/when its banned

Does anyone really think the UK government will be able to ban this quickly?

BZP has been watched for over a year now and I haven't heard of any action taken to illegalise it.

I really doubt there would be a compelling case for an immediate ban or alteration to the Misuse of Phenethylamines Act to include beta-ketones.

"The drug is sold by a host of websites and generally costs between £90 and £100 for 10 grammes - more than cocaine and ecstasy can often be found for."

What a load of crap!

As for it being addictive that is also rubbish imo! Yes it is morish when you have been taking it, but not physically or mentally addictive like heroin or cocaine..

And banning it, it is far less harmful than BZP or mCPP, so why aren't they banned?!

People are saying Mephedrone is toxic, thats because too many people snort it! If you snort a line of MDMA then you feel far far worse the next day and your chest hurts. Sniffing things is much harder on your body. On any night i have stuck to bombing the meph i have never felt any problems whatsoever!

That article is about 3 weeks old - 29th April. I'm thinking that if they were going to ban it, there would have been more articles since (I haven't seen any). Or more to the point, if there were more articles, it'd be more likely to be banned. This is just a psychiatrist saying it's dodgy - government doesn't respond to mental health professionals, they respond to public pressure!

I expect they'll get around to it eventually, but I wouldn't panic yet.

I do worry about the long term effects. Articles like this say that there ARE long term effects, and they're not good.... but how can we believe that kind of thing? They've been saying for years that MDMA will fuck you up, and have only recently studied enough to say "oh wait, no it won't".

.
By the end he was using it twice a week and had started experiencing hallucinations as well as agitation, excitability and mania.

Twice a week, oh noes! =D

I didn't knnow you could get hallucinations off the stuff. I'm obviously not doing enough, lol.

good ridance i agree very addictive substance so my mates say just like coke a greedy drug me me me..!!:X

Have you ever done Mephedrone? Its got all the love and empathy of MDMA, definately not just like coke, or me me me!

Never tried this and certainly wouldn't shed a tear for bzp either if it was to be banned

The thing is, even if BZP becomes illegal globally, its precursors still are more readily available than MDMA's. It will continue to be the cheaper to mass produce. Banning it does little to nothing to help the Ecstasy market.
