I made a topic a little while ago about the bizarre DXM shortage where I live, but promptly deleted it when a few other Aussies said they had DXM-containing cough medicine with them at that very moment. However, I've now been to fourteen pharmacies, and only once have I found dextromethorphan - and the syrup containing it also had guafensein in it, so I didn't buy it. I'm a bit wtf'd out about this - it's supposed to be about as accessible as alcohol but I can't find it anywhere.

So, without revealing sources, I went to buy it from an online chemist store. Do you think it was in stock? Of course not.

What, is the whole country getting high on syrup?

I've also looked into buying pure DXM powder online, but the sources were very shady to say the least.

And all this after having to miss out on my first mushroom trip today. :(

But on the bright side, turns out you can buy the cough medicine online, which skips the ever-awkward part where you walk into the pharmacy and ask for it. First time I bought the stuff, they clearly had no idea you could get high on it or they would've wondered why I was buying three bottles. But I've encountered a few who seemed to have a better idea.

^^ I hope that doesn't count as sourcing.

Anyway, I'll leave the thread open this time, to see if anyone else is having similar problems.

Where the hell do you live comrade? Pharmacies in Brisbane seem to all have it in stock; the 200mL bottles are short from the supplier at the moment but 100mL are around.

Sydney - and it's bizarre, I know. I have however just found an online pharmacy that sells the stuff, and I'm wavering on the 'Buy' button in the odd event they call and ask what I'm planning to use a full litre of cough syrup for.

EDIT: ALWAYS read the fine print, hah! "If you order 2 or more of this product for the same person it will be upgraded to a Pharmacist Only Medicine and you will be required to call one of our pharmacists after you place your order."

^ Yeah at a certain quantity the scheduling changes and the pharmacist will have to give you a call. Similar with codeine combination products right now; if you try to order too many they will tell you that you need to get a script.

I remember when big boxes of codeine though were S2 in NSW; as I live in QLD I used to order a few boxes at a time from Sydney and never received a call or email or anything.

Figures, but I'm completely not surprised. At any rate, I ordered just one 200mL bottle; with the 60mL I have left over it's good for one Plateau 2 and one Plateau 3 trip. (1mL = 3mg of DXM.) It's a shame, I wanted to stock up and also share it with some friends, but no matter.

If anyone else lives in Sydney and you're having the same problem, this is what I recommend until it's back in stock. Ordering online is also much cheaper than buying it IRL. If only you could order multiple bottles, the value would be much higher. Possibly you could list that it's for several people and buy three or four though, I didn't think to gamble with that.

Amendment: Good for one Plateau 3 trip and that's all.

That's odd. Are they all chain pharmacies?

Not that I buy it, but I regularly notice Robitussin Dry Cough Forte? bottles in my small, locally owned pharmacies in Bumfuck, NSW.

Maybe all the people in the area are gettin in their before you and clearing them out :P School kids gotta get high too =D also don't forget those using to potentiate opis

Yeah, it's Dry Cough Forte. Some of them are chain pharmacies, but it's basically whatever's in the area. The sudden drought is very odd but your suggestion is the only explanation I can think of.

i've been a lurker on this forum for some time...i suppose the time has come to contribute something to it. %)

OP, it would seem to me that one of your problems may be you indiscreet approach.
this is only a guess, because you don't state it explicitly - but are you asking for multiple bottles of cough medicine each time you attempt to buy it?
this is a red light to any pharmacy staff that you may be planning to use the product in a way that is not intended.

most OTC meds are sold at the discretion of the pharmacist, and one of the classic brush-offs for suspicious purchases is "we are out of stock".

it's easier to explain, and harder to argue with than "you look like a druggie".

perhaps try asking for one bottle in future?

Thanks spacejunk. The problem is, the bottles are almost always up on shelves accessible to all. I've seen other brands of Robitussin, as said one of them containing dextromethorphan but contaminated with guafensein, but the dry cough forte is always conspicuously absent. I only ask when I can't find it. I've never asked for multiple bottles, simply whether they have it in stock at all, and I definitely don't look like a druggie. So it beats me, I guess there's just a drought for some reason. I've had a PM from another member saying they've had the same problem in Sydney, too.

But it doesn't matter. One 200mL bottle coming in the mail for the same price I'd pay instore for 100mLs, including delivery.

Also headdah, I've done exactly that before. Unfortunately it led to the same awkward out-of-stock scenario, and then they insisted Benadryl or something would do the job just as well. Then I went "But I always use Robitussin!" like it was some horrible cheesy ad, and left before I ended up buying a useless bottle of cough syrup.

are u using dxm for opiates potentiation or purely for dxm tripping? cuz if its for potentiation the Benadryl dry Forte is good enough. As you are only having 30mls or so of it.

But if for tripping, Benadryl would work too, you just need to follow a simple dxm extraction method. Search BL theres some good techs here :)

There's plenty down here in Adelaide, although I usually have to go to a couple of chemists to find the 200ml Dry Cough Forte.
If you're gonna buy it online I'd suggest getting some pure DXM hbr and some PEG instead of getting 5 bottles from CW online.
It's never awkward for me buying it, I usually get one bottle per chemist/pharmacy, then again I live within walking distance of 4

It could just be a supply and demand thing. People buying stuff like this for legit coughs want multiple actives usually, with DX there's only 1. It might be seen as not getting your money's worth.

DX isn't usually hidden, not like riko, or psedoephedrine containing products. Could be unique to that chemist. Pharmacist knows kids are getting high off the stuff so keeps them in the back.

I"ve noticed the shortage of 200ml Robo DX. Chem chick tried to sell me Bisolvon dry instead. I quickly glanced at the label, it was true that it contained only DX, but as I've never used it I decided I wanted to stay with tried and trusted DX.

BTW, something interesting I"ve experienced when getting DX and panadeine at the same time. A couple of pharmacists have warned me about the sedating 'side effects' of taking panadeine while using DX. It seems they are well aware of the potentiating effects of DX.

^ I don't know if it would be a case of pharmacists being aware of the potentiation in that term; it's just that they are both considered medications that could cause drowsiness and mixing them together increases that probability.

I enquired why this would be to the last the pharmacist. She said it's because the active in the cough mixture is structurally related to the codeine in panadeine.

I don't know enough to know if that's true, or what she said made sense, but gave me a sense that she knew of interaction possibilities either from her knowledge of pharmacology or maybe from information from peers or the internet about abuse potential.

It struck me as strange I"ve only been told this by 2 pharmacists ever & both in the last month.

^ They are both structurally related via the morphinan structure, and both can cause drowsiness and affect mental alertness. I haven't met any pharmacists who know about the use of DXM to potentiate opioids and reduce tolerance though; they are aware of the uses of say antihistamines since that is an older concept and more widely used in medicine.

Sounds like you met a couple of cautious pharmacists though. :)

Ive never seen robitussin for sale, hell the first time i tried to get it the bitch told me it was illegal..
I usually get Bisolvon dry, its only got 400mg but hey it does the job.

^ lol that's wack. My first time I bought 2 big bottles of robo dx at once, no questions asked. Barely even a funny look from the old lady at the checkout :D
