After having acquired some veterinary Torb/Torbugesic, I cannot find much information on how to administer it. It was in the form of a plastic vial (not sealed too well) the size of a small amber medicine dropper vial. The previous owner knows nothing about it, but I did a bit of research. Here's what I've gathered.
-The label said it expired 3-27-12 but I still have some hope that it works.
-The label says that it was for a cat and to administer 0.66cc (0.66mL) by mouth every 6-8 hours as needed for pain.
-The label says it is a "Pain Mix (Torb 10mg/Pet Tinic 10 c(?) (1 PER BO) [FYI Pet-Tinic is a combination of multivitamins, I do not know what 1 PER BO means]
I researched up Butorphanol (chemical name), Torbugesic (veterinary name brand), and Stadol (human name brand). The average stadol dosage is 1mg nasally or 1mg intraveneously. I am not sure as to the potency of the Torbugesic, but I am assuming that because it says Torb 10mg on the vial, the whole vial is 10mg since it was to be given to a feline and felines require significantly less dosage than humans.
I have already slowly worked my way up safely to test it:
Trial 1: 1 drop on a q-tip rubbed in my nose, no noticeable effects
Trial 2: 1 drop nasally, no noticeable effects
Trial 3: 3 drops nasally, no noticeable effects
My fourth trial which I am contemplating within the next 30 minutes is to administer 1cc (1mL) rectally. Why rectally? Well I refuse to inject an unknown dosage of an expired medication into me nor do I have the means to, but I know that rectal administration comes very close to IV administration for many pharmaceuticals and is far safer.
Suggestions, advice, recommendations? I want to try butorphanol just for the experience.
