Howdy all,

I've had pretty sever anxiety/bit of depression for years now; whilst things were going alright when I was taking lots of diazepam, now that I'm not (withdrawing slow enough not to be too bothered) I am back at square one. Besides meditation and CBT, I think I do need a medication again. I basically refuse to take SSRI/SNRI's becuase of the side effects and the fact they don't particularly help.

Now, my doctor is propsing I begin taking seroquel. This I am not keen on at all. I have been looking briefly into Buspirone as an anxiolytic to use while I complete my CBT and meditation classes....I have read some info, not a lot- I was hoping you guys could assist me with what is one primary concern when I take a medication, and thats is INTERACTIONS, namely with psychedelics....

I'm also interested if anyone can direct me to some data on the efficacy of this stuff. Either personal stories of study-things would be great.

*I posted here as I am not looking for simple opinions as such, but some 'hard fact' as such.

My thanks! :)

i dont have enough technical details about it but as far as i know its a serotoninergic drug so it definitely has some interactions with psychedelics i guess. for its sedative properties well docs claim that its a sedative but its even weaker than doxylamine imo you feel weird effects on high doses but they arent pleasant at all. im not sure if its cns depressant or not but once i took a very large dose with lots of codeine and i got respiratory depression. im not sure what else say hope this helps you a bit:)

seroquel-
Did you ever see 'One Flew over the Cookoo's Nest?
Thats what the stuff does to you - I've seen it.
Besides, it gives you Major X100 RLS.

I think you have to make up your mind on Buspiron for yourself and being prejudiced. All I hear its a crap drug, one friend in psychiatry told of people really disliking it,but then some snorted it to get a "high" though it seemed not pleasant.Best is to try it exactly as prescribed, particularly the dose as it might only work in a narrow range.

I'd rather suggest Trazodone, but even that seems to have some paradoxical anxiety reactions, might be from the MCPP metabolite.

IIRC, Buspar is a direct agonist at 5ht1a. This might interfere with MDMA, if Buspar has a greater affinity than MDMA. I've also heard bad things about Buspar anecdotally. You might also try mirtazapine (Remeron)...

ebola

^I tried mirtazepine once before; didn't really like the sluggish feeling or the wieght gain, though that would be good at the moment :\

I'm not at all looking to get high of Buspirone; just try it for anxiety and see how it goes. The concern is what it will do when I put other stuff in my head....Also MDMA and me=not friends for many years, so thats no concern. It doesn't bother me if the drugs won't work as such; just a danger issue.

Cheers all- any more info would be great :)

Well, here you go, swilow.

I was prescribed to buspirone last year after my doc at the time took me off of clonazepam. I found it to be an absolutely horrific drug.

If you were to look at the list of side effects, you'll even find that it states nervousness as one of them.

Anyway, here's my personal experience.

I took this drug as prescribed, in hopes that it would help with my panic disorder. I felt nothing for the first week and a half, and then, suddenly, I was much worse off than I was before. I started to get the shakes after taking each dose, and my panic disorder began to get worse. I stopped using this drug after I fainted one night when I stood up to get some water, shortly after taking it.

I generally stay with cannabis for my anxiety these days.

And I agree, I refuse to take SSRI's/SNRI's as well. Too many nasty side-effects.

Might I suggest Phenibut?

Also, small doses of Seroquel aren't so bad for relieving stress. I was prescribed to it shortly a couple years ago, but couldn't stand it after getting on the higher doses and couldn't stand the weight gain, either.

I hope this helps, and I hope you find a cure to your anxiety.

It has been no help to me.. made me feel worse + headaches and nausea.
The "sedatory" effects are negligible and more strangely uncomfortable than anxiolytic.
Going to start Mirtazapine on the 25th to replace Dosulepin. Not fond of that idea either really.

More Junk by your friendly Pharma

This was on my list of drugs doctors precribe without having a clue other than what Pharma tells them.

Obviously, this is my personal experience:

Buspar - monstanoodle's comments to the tee.
Effexor - worst drug that could ever be prescribed to someone suffering from anxiety. (well except for any full blown phsycedelic or amphetamine).

Tried to edit out title, only post# number 6, I'll figure it out eventually.

Stonedandrolling, cheers for that. I had read about the 'nervousness' thing- if anything, thats what I have the most; extreme extreme nervousness :\

well except for any full blown phsycedelic

Psychedelics work alright for me :)

here are some user reviews: askapatient.com

You won't really find 'hard facts' on buspirone, but I can say that it helps with PAWS from H. More like a stimulant than a benzo.

This article may give you some idea of how it works: buspirone

Just remember that it takes roughly 1 month for buspirone to start working, so if you give this a go, make sure you keep using it for at least a month before you make a decision to stop.

Brain zaps are a pretty common side effect whilst getting used to this medication as well, so take that into account if you are keen on this chem.

^I must admit to being kinda turned off now.

Also, my doctors have determine that 200mg of sertraline a day will help :| Its odd- I remember saying to them I wasn't going to use SSRI's any more. What a joke...

I might try being scripted a small dose of seroquel for relieving occaisional panic/anxiety. Withdrawing from benzo's now, so no GABAergic is going into me for a while.

Man, I'm tired of being insistently offerred SSRI's. They do not work for me. And fucked if I'm going to take the highest reccommended dose. I can neither afford nor do I desire it.

Don't be turned off.

It all depends on what type of anxiety you are experiencing. I would recommend buspirone for people who are anxious about leaving the house, anxious about what they are going to do that day, etc. I would prescribe this for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), but nothing else. I would not expect it to help with benzo withdrawal at all, and probably make things worse.

And like I said, it has been proven to be very helpful for recovering Heroin addicts.

It really does not cut it for typical anxiety and panic attacks. You really have to go with something that is more direct.

I've tried Buspirone before, and it is similar in efficacy as Alprazolam, although less potent. I've mixed it with LSD and shrooms before to prevent bad trips, it doesn't ruin much of the psychedelic high, just puts you into a deeper stupor. Wouldn't advise taking it with MDMA as I've had a bad experience with MDMA and Alprazolam, but unless you want random blackouts, stay away.

Unfortunately, the anxiolytic effects of Buspirone are only see after repeated administration 3 x day x 1-4weeks. I would err on the side of caution mixing a single dose with any psychoactive chemical, as brainzaps would most probably play a big role in your experience, not to mention the possibility of SS.

I am in no way taking away from your experience.

I would also be very careful to compare alprazolam with buspirone, even though the pill shape is very similar :)
