I recently got hold of a bottle of 100 x 10mg Buspar and decided to give it a try for social anxiety as it's often prescribed in place of Benzo's for this purpose.

I took a 10mg pill on an empty stomach with a glass of water and within about 20-30 minutes began to experience the weird "brain zaps" which you often see reported for Buspar. It's really quite hard to put into words how it feels, it's like sudden little rushes or electric pulses every few seconds, and when turning your head. Not particularly unpleasant, but also not particularly desirable either. This effect continued for the next hour or so and gradually subsided.

I went outside to see how effective the anxiolytic effects were. Normally I'm quite stressed and self-conscious when I'm outside as my social anxiety is what you might call chronic. I found the Buspar did alleviate some of feelings and stress, but didn't remove it completely and I suspect this may have been a placebo-effect, as subsequent tests proved less effective. The weird brain zaps actually helped detract attention away from the anxiety and nervousness funnily enough, as I was more focused on them.

I subsequently discovered that taking half a Buspar pill (5mg) worked just as well and I didn't experience the brain zaps on this lower dose. The anxiolytic effects seem to become effective with continued regular usage over several weeks. Whether this is because the drug builds up in the system or the brain just adapts to it, I'm not sure.

Taken by itself (at 5mg) I have to say it's not particularly effective as an anxiolytic drug, and nothing like a benzo drug like Valium which I have also tried. It's effects are subtle and not like a tranquilizer. However it does take some of the edge of the anxiety in social situations, and can be safely taken in combo with other drugs so might be useful as part of a daily regime.

I haven't tried taking it in higher doses so I can't say whether it's more effective and whether or not the brain zaps would return. I will give it a try and report back as I have plenty of the pills left.
