Art burning man

Wonder if anyone will run into the fire again?

right?

as i mentioned earlier in the thread, by my conservative estimate, there have been a total of about 1.15M attendees at burning man since its inception.

there have been a total of about 13 deaths at, or around, the event.

these deaths are tragic but the number is extremely low and focusing on them when discussing the event seems petty.

you're more likely to die on the drive there or back than at the event...

I'll have to do research some time if I remember to. Seems there is a lot that I just don't understand about the event.

I don't think I'd fit in, anyway -

*morning rooster coos*
--tumble weed stage left to stage right--
Sargent: alright campers, time for the burning man
Freak: do I need to come out of my tent?
Sargent: yes God damnit! The man is burning soon!
Freak: golly, wouldn't miss that for the world..

*goes into town to find the burning man*

Freak: hey everyone, I'm freak, where is the burning man?
Friendly People: oh, no silly! This is a non profit organization. We don't actually burn people at the stake.
Freak: GARD DANGIT

WOW, I didn't know it was that many. Throw in all the sexual assaults and you have an Anarchist paradise. Shit, I didn't think it was that dangerous. I was thinking about going, but if I do I will have to bring to a number of self protection devices.

Maybe you can meet me in person and realize, just what a kind, polite and respectful gentleman that I am.

Wow 13 and all the disgusting sexual assaults that happen and go on and so many that go unreported. I could care less about the illicit drug use. But personal safety is a very serious concern.

I hate evil. I hate sex crimes. But I have so much love in my heart. I want to experience Burningman but, now I feel that being not being well protected and ready to protect myself and those with me would be an error in judgment. Considering the risks, I would be a fool not to have the tools for self defense.

🤔, Nevada and the laws regarding self protection. Maybe I need to easily find like minded individuals who would like to have a good time but would be willing to protect themselves and those around them.

That data is backed up by what; your word? The same as a 3 dollar bill?

Or maybe the people that attend are so wasted that they crash and burn. ( no pun intended, but very fitting).

Wow, you have provided a new prospective on burning man. Should I invest in an industrial flame thrower to help out. You know to help light the fire. Please don't misread this, I just wanna be helpful. Oh that's right, it is now ruined by a bunch of rippies( rich hippies, or basically rich hippie wannabes).

Then again it is always the leisure class that tries to represent the common man and uses it to empower their self righteous entitled selves, with bullshit.

Then again so many of the the hippies came from privileged backgrounds. Just like so many commies.

Burningman is just going to be like all those Woodstock, disasters. People like you have ruined whatever the Hell burning man was. I am guessing it is just another pagan ritual. The original Wickerman movie is the perfect example. But this one is is an effigy to a pagan ceremony that probably never existed till a couple of seriously wasted people came up with it.

Then of course it got ruined by upper middle class rippies. Then of course the older alasdairm and his wealthy liberal friends show up and it becomes that much worse.

Ah, then the commercialization of it and then it becomes a joke like all the Woodstocks,🤣🤣.

Yep throw in the upper middle and very comfortable middle class; and above, and make it exactly what it isn't supposed to be.

If alasdairm is going; then it has officially been ruined.

WOW, I didn't know it was that many.

1 death every 3 years is hardly that many.

Maybe you can meet me in person and realize, just what a kind, polite and respectful gentleman that I am.

your bluelight contribution of anger, insults and abuse suggest otherwise.

but i'm a faithless servant of satan so what do i know?

what part of that particular insult is the polite and respectful part?

disgusting sexual assaults that happen and go on and so many that go unreported.

and that data is backed up by what?

if there are "so many" sexual assaults that go unreported, present your evidence.

If alasdairm is going; then it has officially been ruined.

what part of this insult is the polite and respectful part?

this is your final warning. stop insulting people. if you can't, you'll be warned and that will trigger a temporary ban from the site.

Down in Texas. Anytime I go to California I've flown. Can't even afford to go to a cousin's wedding this fall out there because of ticket prices right now.

i get it. it's hard. i'd suggest making it a road trip (so much easier to bring everything you need) but, at today's miserable gas prices you'd be looking at about $600 or $800 just in gas :(

Hey @alasdairm,

I've watched video after video about Burning Man. I've helped perform at much smaller venues of this kind, but I suspect I wouldn't be impressed by many of the visitors, I'm usually part of the entertainment in places like this or I don't come.

Having said this, I am very interested in the art.

It's just much too expensive, I don't drive, and most importantly I don't live in the U.S..

Still, I would love to build a pavilion there.

I just don't think it's going to happen.

it is different than many events in terms of the core experience. unlike typical festivals or events - where's there's an obvious performer-audience or supplier-consumer relationship - bm is much more focused around universal participation.

that doesn't mean there are not large sound systems where people play, or spin, and others dance. but the overarching feel is much less transactional.

never say never? :)

We have such a festival near Amsterdam, but of course nowhere near the size of Burning Man.

Jeez dude, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed!
I usually just pass out on my favorite old comfortable chair. Wow I am getting old,🤣🤣

Ok so you are saying it hasn't been commercialized and ruined by rippies in Nice RV's or Motorhomes?

Wow there was a homicide in 2025.

The odd thing about the guy from Oklahoma who lived in Switzerland who in 2017 ran into the big fire, was there were no drugs and apparently he was only drink small amounts of craft been according to the newspaper article and I think a documentary I saw said the same thing.

Oh no it has probably gotten much worse than I thought. NPR said way back in 2019 "Once considered an underground gathering for bohemians and free spirits of all stripes. Burning Man has since evolved into a destination for social media influencers, celebrities and the Silicon Valley elite".

Dude you need to chill. I was quoting NPR. Also I seen footage and it seems to have changed. Not for the better, imo.

Ugh, That was 7 years ago. Other than the murder, which is sad and I don't know the details of, Burning Man, probably has gotten even worse with the rippies( not an insult, it is about wealthy hippie types, I invented that not as a pejorative, but as discription because, I didn't don't know what else to call, them.) and alasdairm and his friends, are a different crowd that I am comfortable around. I get along better with the middle and working class people. Also, for some reason the more open minded type of bohemians.

Strangely, I would not look as out of place as most; of the people that Burning Man was created for. The influx of the the rich people who just wanna say they went to burning man, ah no.

That sucks a 4,000-5000 mile road trip( round trip). Then finding a place rent a motor home a few hundred miles before we get there. Ugh. Finding a place to store the vehicle used to get there.

Then I am stuck surrounded by strangers and not the real people who burning man was created for; the free spirited bohemian's. Now it has become something even worse than what NPR said in 2019.

A hip and trendy place for well off California rich types( is that ok) to go to. And of course a lot of other wealthy ( wannabes, a description that is appropriate)who just want to say they went to Burning Man. Ugh.

I have for years wanted to go to The Maker Faire, which is in Dearborn Michigan. Which was a hub for Moderate Muslims, which I don't have any issue other than; I have different relgion than a huge part of the city. Which is fine. I am not at all a racist or against freedom of religion. I like the Arabs in the Detroit metro area, most of whom identify as Christian or actually catholic which I, may differ from but know there is a reason they try to keep their adherents from actually reading The Bible. ( Their Bible, which is slightly different, but that is a whole other thing). But they own most of the liquor stores, which meant I got to meet them, a lot.

Dearborn was now become Dearbornistan( call me intolerant of and the hate and anti-Semitic stuff going right now( yes, I know there are other groups who fall into this ethnic catagory), but I am against the anti-jewish hostilities big time and it is very disturbing, so once again that is a place I guess I won't visit.

They are mostly Chaldeans, many who fled from Saddam's Iraq. The stories I have heard about their relatives and them fleeing persecution is heart breaking. But they have become great business people and assimilated well.

I find many of their women quite attractive. My late little sister was very attracted to Chaldean men.

I like my very diverse area, not necessarily my neighborhood but metro Detroit, in general. Hey, you gotta call some where home, at least for me.

Being nomadic has its pitfalls. Travel is nice though, but I have the money , time and could go. However Burning Man seems to have been ruined, or at least changed and not for the better, imo.

you,lol just kidding. I don't like things that are to well known and attract people I don't really carefor.
I have seen the footage and I am entitled to own opinion.

Just look it up, celebrities and "influencers" can I insult them?
Also glamping. I was joking about the RV, too much trouble to rent and they are not the real experience, I would really want, unless it was a piece of shit and I had to drive it over 2,000 miles to get there. Besides, I had thought about a road trip through middle America 🇺🇸 🤔, with a friend or 3.

But an RV, would be great: But all the cheap low mileage ones have been bought up and are now in your state, illegally living in places they shouldn't be allowed. Buying a cheap RV and then selling it when I got back from a month or two on the road, would be nice. I have to think about that.

Unfortunately people bought them all up and moved to Cali. No proerty taxes, lol. Just a big mess. Not in all areas. They get kicked out of one area and go to the next.

Just look it up

i don't need to look it up. i've been to burning man. 7 times.

don't get me wrong - i get that i am 1 person with 1 opinion on burning man. ask 100 other people and you'll get 100 other opinions. what i am saying is not "right" or "correct" it's just this guy's perspective.

but my posts are based on first-hand experience. and i'll take that over hearsay and second-hand accounts.

sounds to me like you should just never go to burning man. cw suggests leaving your expectations and assumptions at the door and i think you've made your mind up too thoroughly to be able to do that. ymmv.
