Bupropion is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor, the primary pharmacological action of the drug is as a mild dopamine reuptake inhibitor and also a much weaker norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor as well as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. Chemically, bupropion belongs to the class of aminoketones and is similar in structure to stimulants such as cathinone andamfepramone, and to phenethylamines in general. It is an antidepressant but also works as a stimulant.

So my question, has anyone had any experience with bupropion for weight loss or as an appetite suppressant? I know unlike SSRI medications it is supposedly weight neutral.. but I cannot really find concrete evidence online about whether or not it is an appetite suppressant or increases your metabolic rate. I've read conflicting evidence on the NHI website plus other psychiatric forums and documents. I understand like any drug its effects vary between each individual, but overall if anyone has any info on this or personal experience that would be greatly appreciated!

Also I just want to state I have no intention of misuse of bupropion as it has no recreational value, is highly dangerous in larger doses (due to increased risk of seizure and bradycardia, cardiac failure and cardiac arrest). I am just trying to find info. Thanks!

The most relevant info I can give you is that I was once prescribed I believe 150mg of Wellbutrin. I was noticeably sped up, and yes experienced moderate appetite suppression. However, I think that had more to do with the faster heartrate and general stimulation of the first few doses. Those effects diminish rather quickly, unfortunately, deeming buproprion as a poor choice for weightloss.

My best advice? Get a prescription for a moderately high dose and then start as low as possible. Take some every 2-3 days, titrating the dose upwards... as you're aware of the side effects of the lowered seizure threshold. On a sidenote, you may not experience these side effects. The seizure risk was so pronounced, I was prescribed to wear ssunglasses indoors whenever fluorescent lights were around. It really lowered my seizure threshold. Not tryna get into a lecture.. just backing up your display of intelligence by taking the warnings seriously. My real world experience should reinforce your caution.

I appreciate the insight! Thanks! I'll definitely make sure if I decide to try bupropion as a weight loss aid to titrate upwards. I'm hoping more will respond so I can get even more insight.
