My question is that I am on Butrans 20 every week and I have recently been put on Percocet for breakthrough pain. I find that the Percocet mixes well with the Butrans but I am wondering that since I am dependent on the Butrans being on it for almost 9 years will I be risking a dependence to Percocet using them or does the dependence on Butrans make it so I am safe from becoming dependent on Percocet as well?

u are not safe brother....on top of bupe addiction u will have and oxy addiction too.....that'a how i think.may be somebody will tell u something different, but choose one pain medication and stick to it.....may be they will potentiate each other and u have better analgesic effect...may be even feel high....but no free lunch u know

I have to wonder who couldnt feel an oxy. But then I remember how my momma would give me her last oxy if I wanted it. And be completely ok with that. If it was my last oxy that someone wanted…not a chance in hell lol. But she just seemed super natural to me.
It’d probably be better just to take a Tylenol because Percocet is oxycodone and Tylenol. It’s the oxycodone that’ll get ya.

Thats a slippery slope

Think of it more like being dependent on opiates in general. Now that you’re dependent on bupe, oxies and every other opiate will to some degree ease the symptoms of your withdrawal. Keep your bupe dose as small as you can and generally never go above two milligrams. Try to take the minimum amount oxy needed for pain management. Test the waters on withdrawal everyonce in a while and if you’re able to endure until you’re feeling normal again that’s great. Your tolerance willl lower and your dose will be more effective. Expect it to be hard won tho.

I am pretty used to about 23mcgs Butrans every 7 days which is what I have been doing for almost 9 years now. My Dr recently put me on Percocet 4 times per day for breakthrough pain. I find that since I am on the Butrans on a regular basis that I am able to use the Percocet for several days and then I am able to stop for several days. I am being careful and am very aware that I probably could become dependent on the Percocet as well which is why I actively stop the Percocet for several days between using them for a day or two. I am thinking that I will be okay as long as I take a lot of time off of the Percocet and not increase my MME per day. I am trying to use the Percocet for when I sincerely have breakthrough pain. So far so good.

You know honestly. I do this with hydrocodone once in awhile. And when I stop the hydrocodone, I don't feel much in the way of withdrawal. Just a bored feeling of being out of an opioid.

So I think what you're doing is fine.
I have more of a psychological pull towards opioids, so if I had endless hydrocodone or lots whenever I did it, I'd probably binge until they're all gone & then suffer for it.

But it's totally doable to take bupe + a full agonist for several days & then stop. You're technically already dependent on an opioid if you're taking bupe daily anyway. And at the doses of bupe you're on, you could probably get higher (although that is not your objective here) by taking more bupe than you probably do from taking the oxy as prescribed for breakthrough pain. Meaning bupe is a hell of a lot more potent anyway, than some oxycodone a few times a day. So you already have a dependence to opioids.

Good luck with everything!

This is a really good thread, I went back and forth between these two, so I took plunge and got put on Suboxone for cravings, I am on 4mg twice day but I still crave or think about oxy all the time, Death88 you always have great advice!

Thanks! :)
I've got a ton of experience with some things & I usually never state anything as fact unless it can be backed up with evidence. Unfortunately most people on BL don't appreciate it though.

You probably will continue to think about oxy on bupe. At least until your tolerance drops down to the point where the bupe might actually make you feel a little good.
Did you switch from oxy to subs immediately? Cause you could probably use less than 8mg a day & you might get better craving relief & even a little background "high" to help you get through your day. Lower doses of bupe will feel closer to an opioid than higher doses.

But shit, I've been on bupe for almost 10 years now & I still think about full agonist opioids every single day, from the moment I wake up until the time I go to bed. They're just all around better at helping my pain & depression than bupe is. Not that bupe can't be helpful but I find it's partial agonism & ceiling effect very stifling. Finding full agonists though is a pain in the ass, especially if you're a low-income piece of shit like me. Whenever I do run into pain pills, the person's always like "Yeah I want a quadrillion dollars per 5mg hydro/oxy/whatever pill". *eye roll*

So I've basically been forced to accept having bupe as my "opioid of choice" at this point, even though I'd be so much happier on a full agonist.

Been on opiates most of my life, decided to stop, my last oxy was last sept, but buying subs was just as expensive, I started treatment last week, I feel very normal on 4mg, twice a day, but I want to take less but for now I’m ok. This was a huge step for me, I meet again with Dr on Monday to go over my dosage and see where I’m at, I’m the newbie so they only prescribe 8mg a day for first week, then go up if needed, it’s such a relief mentally at this point for me, been too many years of planning where to get my next stock pile, I’m working thru a lot to come clean, I always took subs to prevent withdrawal, after binges, it is helping my pain a lot I’m on disability, so I figured it’s time to do this the right way. I love reading your posts Death88, I been on bluelight over the years, I guess it’s like a safety net for me, thanks!

Well in the end your physical dependence will still just be to opioids, so you wont be dependent on both but one or the other, or anything else that plugs the mu sized hole in your receptors, and you would be widening that hole if these pills are making you feel good.

And then there's the behaviours side of things, bupe is used for a reason, its stabilizing because its long lasting and (usually) not that enjoyable for already opioid dependent people. Oxy is short and sweet. That lends itself well to compulsive redosing.

Just got out of hospital and after being on dilaudid iv for 4 days switched to oxy 20 mg for 3 days orally, Suboxone was on hold then I ran out oxy, I waited 24 hours, the withdrawal symptoms were pretty bad, I microdosed on Thursday and was ok, I was scared of precipitated withdrawal but after 3 micro doses of sub I made it, so I’m back on subs, believe it or not I feel better on subs right now

Oh yeah I am suppose be on 600 mg Gabapentin three times day, but I’m taking 300mg three times, I think there is a good synergy with subs
