The signature crimes of the most violent drug cartel in Mexico are its beheading and dismemberment of rival gang members, military personnel, law enforcement officers and public officials, and the random kidnappings and killings of civilians who get caught in its butchery and bloodletting.

But this disparate band of criminals known as Los Zetas is no longer just a concern in Mexico. It has expanded its deadly operations across the southwestern border, establishing footholds and alliances in states from New York to California. Just last year, federal agents tied a cocaine operation in Baltimore to the Zetas.

“Those of us who live and work along the border know they’re already here,” said Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr., whose Texas county lies on the Rio Grande 50 miles southeast of the Zetas’ stronghold of Nuevo Laredo. “There’s already been killings and many residents here are living in fear.”

Sheriff Gonzalez, whose Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition sought help from the federal government to control growing violence along the border, said the rising brutality of Mexican drug gangs, particularly the Zetas, “never stops shocking me.”

Trained as an elite band of Mexican anti-drug commandos, the Zetas evolved into mercenaries for the infamous Gulf Cartel, bringing a new wave of brutality to Mexico’s escalating drug wars. Bolstered by an influx of assassins, bandits, thieves, thugs and corrupt federal, state and local police officers, the Zetas have since evolved into a well-financed and heavily armed drug smuggling force of their own.

Breaking News! Massive Battle Across Texas Mexico Border - Machine Guns and Explosions - Morning of April 21, 2011

My Brother and I are soldiers in the Army National Guard. My brother, James Bellow, is currently deployed on the Texas/Mexico border. In the early morning hours of April 21st, 2011, my brother witnessed and recorded a MASSIVE firefight and Battle in Mexico, right across from the city of Roma, TX. This battle lasted for hours and included machine gun fire and several explosions from grenades of mortars.

My brother filmed some of the footage of the battle on his phone, which can be seen below:

Something tells me that when silver or lead comes to dc, its gonna take a shit ton of silver...

^ That's because we don't care about Mexico here in the US, hell the head of the DEA celebrated the almost 100% increase in deaths in Mexico as the price to be paid for the Drug War being successful, as long as it's Mexicans dying...gotta love it :(

Ironically the US actually gave the Zetas enforcers military training indirectly. Military training to mexican army -> Zetas recruit them because the mexican army cant compete with the paycheck -> shit goes down. :(

^ Not much different to Al Qaeda when you think about it....

It is pretty disturbing to think that some of the ruthless criminals in Mexico may eventually end up in the states but as far as I am concerned it is probably mostly scaremongering. Especially up in Baltimore, like southern states is one thing but all over the US? I just don't see them risking what they have going on in Mexico which is an absolute cash cow and almost untouchable status, why cross the border into the Western country with the toughest attitude on drugs, particularly when being supplied by minority groups?

This situation in Mexico is getting more and more out of hand and I don't really see it starting to remotely improve until the US alters its drug policy. It is abundantly clear that Mexico is an extremely convenient transit route for blow, heroin, weed and meth into arguably the worlds largest drug market. Combine this with poverty and a culture where machismo is prevalent and you end up with the powder keg that is Mexico today.

Mexican Drug Cartels Place Roadside Bomb in Brownsville, Texas

Last Sunday night, authorities in Brownsville, Texas, discovered an explosive device on Highway 77, just minutes from the Mexican border. The Brownsville Bomb Squad was dispatched to neutralize the explosive device.

The local authorities and the media are dismissing the event, calling the device ‘poorly made.’ Apparently, it was made with a modified hand grenade, and it’s being reported that it did not have a ‘detonator.’

Nevertheless, there are a lot of similarities between the explosive devices used along the Mexican border towns like Reynosa and Matamoros to the one found on this side of the border, in Brownsville, Texas. The grenade appears to be an older ‘pineapple style’ device, used very often by Mexican military and Mexican drug cartels.

These types of bombs have been found numerous times in Matamoros and in Reynosa, Mexico.

I heard this on the news... I used to live there...

News made it a big story. God knows it will be used as more 'evidence' that we need to expand the federal government, tighten border security, so we can regulate the flow of narcotics coming from Mexico, and try to ensure all rivals of the cartel(s) we support have maximum prices and little competition from others.
