MARGATE — When Margate police summoned Nancy Ferreira to a hospital emergency room on New Year's Eve, she saw her 14-year-old son having a seizure and struggling to breathe.

"He had 10 seizures in total and his blood pressure was extremely high," Ferreira said. "He didn't know I was there."

Ferreira's two sons, 14 and 17, had been smoking "Mr. Nice Guy herbal smoke blend," a brand of incense that is labeled "not for human consumption" according to Margate police. Her elder son spent 24 hours in the hospital and was not as severely injured, she said.

Officials do not know what Mr. Nice Guy is made of, and a West Palm Beach company that offers the product on the Internet won't talk about it.

But it appears similar to products with brand names like Spice, Black Mamba and K2, often sold by the gram, that federal and state governments are trying to regulate. Users who get these "incense" products at gas stations, convenience stores and head shops reportedly seek an effect similar to a marijuana high, but without any trace in drug tests.

The teens told police officers that a friend bought Mr. Nice Guy for them and that they had smoked it before "because it's not illegal," according to a police report. They said they had never suffered such severe reactions.

Ferreira says blood and urine tests for her sons showed no traces of illegal substances, alcohol or narcotics. The Sun Sentinel is not identifying the teens because they are juveniles.

The federal government says these products may contain synthetic cannabinoids that were developed over the past 30 years for medical research. They are not FDA-approved for human consumption.

"Retailers say there is nothing on the package to say what it is, and that's the point," U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spokeswoman Barbara Carreno said. "They're being advertised as more potent than marijuana, and marijuana can cause heart palpitations. There is concern whether this is actually even synthetic marijuana."

"This is not incense," Carreno said.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers has heard of adverse effects from smoking the incense from its 60 members across the United States since the last quarter of 2009, when there were 14 reported cases. In 2010, there were 2,862 cases. During the first four days of the New Year, there were 42 calls for help.

The DEA says that medical practitioners have linked the products to problems including vomiting, excessively rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, seizures and hallucinations.

The Florida Poison Control Center in Miami, one of three in the state, gets at least one call a week about ill effects from incense smokers, said Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, medical director of the center.

He called the incense products "bathtub brew" and said poison centers can have difficulty advising doctors or sick people who call. He has not heard of deaths from incense smoking.

"Depending on who made it, who knows what's in it?" Bernstein said. "There are inconsistent effects, and I have my doubts that it's even the same drug that is being sold by various manufacturers."

In November, the DEA announced it may categorize five synthetic cannabinoids as illegal drugs, and take them off the legal market for a year while government researchers investigate the products' effects on humans.

The incense is manufactured all around the world, the federal government says. At Bob's News and Books on Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, Mr. Nice Guy was sold out Tuesday.

Store manager Erin Steinberg said he's not restocking until he sees what happens with the proposed restrictions on the product. Meanwhile he sells a $20 vial of Black Mamba, which resembles marijuana or green tea leaves.

but what a bunch of pussies, OMG OMG OMG I NEVER DID DRUGS BEFORE AND I SMOKED TOO MUCH IM GONNA DIE!!!111
honkey, please.

Smoking Mr. Nice guy right now, haha
Also I'm on the Broward/Palm Beach County line

The first time I tried this shit, one small hit - I was tripping a little but I could keep my cool for the 30 mins it took to get to a normal high. Now I have to smoke a small bowl, like 3-4 hits... it's dare I say almost as good as real weed. But I can see how people with little experience who overdue it could freak out and go to the hospital.

And still the topic says synthetic marijuana, what a load of bs.

One step closer to a federal banning...

This is how it always happens. Once they start selling them in stores, where random idiots are able to buy it, it's only a matter of time until it gets banned. It happened with GHB, it's happening with Salvia, and now with synthetic cannabinoids. Only a matter of time.. stock up while you still can.

It would be nice if people could just keep it underground, not sell it in stores. That way, the people who buy it will be more experienced and knowledgeable, and will be less likely to OD or freak out. But people are too greedy to do that... sigh.

I live in Broward.. and from what I've been hearing.. Stuff like this is everywhere, especially this Mr. Nice Guy

I am one of the guys

I am one of the teenagers that was in on this, I paid for the shit, 6 of us smoked, I've smoked this shit before, so have the others, I've had 3 bags of the shit in one sitting before with no issues but being super fucking high. I've done acid, coke, ecstasy, shrooms and of course a shit ton of weed. But here's what happened. My boy picked up a new bong (I wanted one) and brought 4 bags of nice guy, we went back and started smoking, everyone got to take two hits over 4 bowls between the 6 of us. I noticed it was getting different, I got tunnel vision and felt shakey, we're walking back to one of my boys car and I'm trying to get in, I couldn't open the door though (By then the seizure had started and my hands had locked up) I remember my boy going "J, can you get in the fucking car?" "I think I'm to high*smirk on my face*" but then I blacked out, my boy said the smile was locked on my face and I was sliding down his car shaking, but still smiling so he thought I was bullshitting up until the point I started to turn purple clench my teeth and violentyly shake, kick my legs, and wave my arms. One of Ms.Ferreiras' kids was already in the car seizing but nobody noticed till later on and shit. Then the other ferreira boy went down, and so did my boy who was the driver, the other 2 had no reaction at all though, we all had seizures, me and the first ferreira boy being the worst cause our hearts stopped until being recessitated shortly after by the paramedics. So it's not like we're a bunch of kiddies who freaked out and couldn't handle our shit. It just fucking did us in. So don't sit here talking all your shit XD Cause you were not there, and know nothing.

1. I seriously doubt your heart stopped....that would be a heart attack...did I miss the article that said you had a heart attack, verified by paramedics?

2. Yet, that's just what you did. You just smoked the shit out of a product that varies greatly batch to batch since it's unregulated, without testing it in lower doses until you knew the strength?

People like you guys ruin it for the rest of us...please, stop being immature and stupid with your drug use.

jwh drugs are known for causing seizures in a way that cannabis does not, something to do with being a full CB1/2 receptor agonist and blocking the effects of gaba. thc is only a partial agonist

pretty bad- watch out for this

the reality is it could happen to people buying the pure chemicals off the net- these drugs are certainly not as safe as cannabis (which isn't without its dangers)

Which isn't much of anything, really, except potentially inspiring laziness and making you spend more money at the grocery store. A strain with a high THC:CBD ratio inducing an anxiety attack in someone who is highly predispositioned for those is the worst that could happen.

That's a lot of "shit". Also, three whole bags (of some "smoking blend" that we don't have the slightest idea of what its composition is, nonetheless)?! How long ago did you do that before this incident?

If you believe the guy's story, it doesn't seem like he is at fault.
With legal, uncontrolled substances like Mr Nice Guy, there is no way to know how potent each batch is, and therefore no way to use it completely safely. (Not to mention that we don't know what is in it, of course...)
The problem is with the current system, based on the fact that drugs are illegal and therefore uncontrolled (in the case of weed), or legal and uncontrolled. If weed were legal, available, and (presumably) cheaper than it is now on the black market, many fewer people would use unknown chemicals to get high...

But, even if you were right about the fact that the guy should be responsible...

Do you really think that all people could possibly become magically mature and experienced with drug use?

You seem to be missing a basic understanding of human nature.

Some people will overdo it. Period. That is what people do.

Another reason to legalize, especially the (relatively) safe ones like weed, mushrooms, etc.

Not without revamping the way many countries educate on the subject of psychoactive substances. When it comes to the mostly-legal substances, ethyl alcohol and nicotine, education programs only focus on attempting to dissuade people from using them; with the controlled substances, it's even moreso the case, going as far as to using blatant propaganda and misinformation (I'd consider outdated/obsolete/disputed information as part of that) in order to do so. That attempted social engineering policy hasn't proven to be very effective at all, has it? It still results with loads of people that haven't been turned away from using in the slightest, while also not being practically informed about the effects of the drugs that they're taking. Practical and useful information needs to be what is provided, along with reasonable opportunity for the common person to gain access to it. Really, education needs an overhaul in countless other ways than that, but that's for another topic.

I feel sorry for the poster this happened to, but really I smoke all day every day and ONE bag of mr. nice guy lasts me 2-3 days... it's a powerful blend of whatever, lol. Be safer in the future.

Great, this shit happens in Broward and came from Palm Beach. The only upside to this is maybe the local media and PBSO/BSO will have something else to consider than "pill mills." The Palm Beach Post had a particular hard on for reporting on that.

I understand 100% what you mean, and what I mean was, that when using substances that are of unknown strength from batch to batch...one should try a little out first, before smoking "large" quantities...

And I agree on legalization....especially weed and mushrooms.

Agreed! All day erryday!

Great, more dipshits ODing on chemicals that can be used in valid laboratory research and getting it banned.

And wait; having a blood test on your SONS? Seriously, piss testing them is cynical enough, but you need to BLOOD test them? What the fuck is wrong with parents these days?

Great, more dipshits ODing on chemicals that can be used in valid laboratory research and getting it banned.

come on man. what valid laboratory research are you doing? I guarantee you it doesn't go any farther then smoking that shit out of a scientific glass bong -- which does not make you a scientist by the way.

I never claimed I was a scientist, now did I? I stated that there are in fact valid uses for cannabinoids. Such as researching new medicines. Fuck, one of these probably cures/prevents a certain type of cancer, but when they're scheduled it's damn near impossible for scientists to study their effects.

IIRC, JWH-015 was shown to stop cell metastasis in prostate cancer. The AAI's (as well as most other cannibinoids) absolutely have medical value.
