James Mercer, frontman of The Shins, and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) have formed a new band named Broken Bells. Their debut self-titled album will be out March 9th on Columbia Records. The first single "The High Road" will be available at brokenbells.com come December 21. The single should wet the palate for the 10-song album, which was described in a press release as "melodically seductive and psychologically provocative."

The full tracklist has yet to be announced, but some song titles have been revealed: "The High Road," "Vaporize," "Your Head Is On Fire," "The Ghost Inside," "Sailing to Nowhere," "Trap Doors," "Citizen," and "The Mall and Misery."

Mercer and Burton first met in 2004, backstage at Denmark's Roskilde Festival. Mercer sings vocals on the album and plays guitar and bass. Burton mans the drums, piano, and organ. Burton also produced the album, in Los Angeles. The duo play all of the instruments on the album, with the exception of a full string section, which was arranged by Daniele Luppi.

i'm anxious to hear what this is going to sound like.

It'll be interesting to listen to this, I've been a fan of Danger Mouse's recent collaborations.

Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and James Mercer were on tracks together on Dark Night of the Soul.

Maybe that's some indication of the sound.

Also you can hear some looped samples at the three links in this article

He generally seems to have good luck bringing out the best of his collaborators. Can't wait to check this out.

The single The High Road is pretty tasty. I'm looking forward to the full record.

edit: upon check last.fm, I can see that the full length is out there somewhere. I wonder how long until it leaks to the wider community?

Just listened to The High Road on the hype machine a couple minutes ago then come on here and see this thread! I'm not too familiar with either of them but I like what I'm hearing a lot so far.

^I'm a bit disappointed with hearing the full album though. I'll give it a few days and try again.

^The full album is on at least two of the larger private bit torrent trackers. I imagine if it's not up on the public trackers yet, it will be soon.

I'm still not that impressed, though I've only listened twice, in the back ground. You may like it much more than I :\

^^ I disagree, if its any reassurance. It's very, very, very good IMO. The next step is to listen stoned... I expect great things. =D

EDIT: I got the torrent from a small amount of usniff.com hunting. Wasn't too hard to find.

This album is awesome. I like it alot more than Sparklehorse, Danger Mouse's other experimentocity.

This is so chill, and emotional...and trippy might I add. They really outdone themselves here, bros and bro-ettes
