British woman, 56, gets death for smuggling cocaine into Bali

“We hope the verdict sends a message to the world that Bali is not a drugs haven and that offenders will be given the fairest possible punishment,” Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin said on Wednesday.

This is the same crap that is spouted after every single arrest, after every single pound of drugs, year after year after year. Drugs will always be available and the war on drugs is an absolute failure.

don't want death penalty, don't try and smuggle almost 5kg and think you getting away with it,

thats quick easy money if it was easy i think everyone would be doing it. simple really

5kg of cocaine can fuck a lot of peoples lives up

Indonesia court upholds death sentence for Briton convicted of smuggling cocaine into Bali

AN Indonesian court upheld the death sentence against a British woman convicted of smuggling $US2.5 million ($2.4 million) worth of cocaine into the resort island of Bali, a court official said overnight.

The Bali High Court rejected an appeal from 56-year-old Lindsay June Sandiford, who was convicted in January by a district court and sentenced to face a firing squad, said court spokesman Makkasau.

The decision on her appeal came last week, and Sandiford has 14 days to appeal to the national Supreme Court, said Makkasau, who uses one name like many Indonesians.

Sandiford was arrested last May when 3.8 kilograms of cocaine was discovered stuffed inside the lining of her luggage at Bali's airport.

During the trial, she said she was forced to carry the drugs by a gang that threatened to hurt her children.

Prosecutors had sought 15 years in prison for Sandiford, but the court surprised many by issuing the death sentence.

The British Embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to a written request for comment. Britain's Foreign Office in London has said it strongly opposes Sandiford's death sentence.

Four other defendants - three Britons and an Indian national - connected to the case were sentenced to jail terms ranging from one to six years.

Indonesia has very strict anti-drug laws and most of the more than 40 foreigners on its death row were convicted of drug charges.

I'm sure someone, somewhere might care, but no, it probably wouldn't get as much, if any media attention.

Does this really matter because she is a British woman? If she was Indian, Slavic or Chinese would anyone care?

I often think about this.
It seems like the US media, for example, really wants to say "A United Airlines 747 crashed today, killing 72 Americans. Oh yeah, and 150 other people from lesser countries."
If this woman were Chinese, or Mexican, basically nobody in the press would care at all.
But it doesn't mean that it is wrong to care in reality about this particular woman. Just that we should care about the situation regardless of her nationality.

^Ah, if only "nationality" didn't exist!

I've always wanted to go to Indonesia but I'd be paranoid of getting framed. I don't think this woman was though... that's a lot of coke to be carrying and claim you didn't know.

Meth addiction is so high in south-east Asia... I wonder when the governments are going to clue in that the death penalty is no deterrent. You can kill people all you want but the drug trade is expanding yearly.

Yeah its sad, basically at the behest of our government.

UK woman Rachel Dougall describes year-long ordeal in Bali's Kerobokan Prison

A BRITISH woman has described her ordeal in Bali's notorious Kerobokan Prison, the same jail where convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine are serving time.

Rachel Dougall said she suffered savaged beatings within days of beginning a year-long sentence for drug-related crimes.

Dougall, 40, told the Daily Mail that she had a nervous breakdown after being locked up with drug addicts, HIV-positive inmates and sexually aggressive lesbians in a tiny cell at the prison, nicknamed "Hotel K".

"Most of the women were on drugs virtually every day," she said. "If you had money the guards would get you anything you wanted. Inmates in the men’s prison next door even paid prostitutes for overnight visits."

The women’s unit of Kerobokan where Dougall was locked up also houses Corby, who was sentenced to 20 years in 2005 after she was caught trying to smuggle 4.2 kilos of cannabis into the country in her boogie-board bag.

She has always maintained her innocence.

According to friends and family, Corby’s experience in the prison has led to her developing a mental illness.

Since a judge ruled her sentence cut to 15 years, leading to the possibility of parole, she is reportedly doing much better. She is due to get out 2017.

Also held there are the so-called Bali Nine. The nine men were convicted in 2005 of attempting to traffic 8.3 kilos of heroin from Bali to Australia.

Two of them, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, still face death sentences and have appealed to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for clemency.

Dougall was arrested after fellow Briton Lindsay Sandiford was caught at Bali’s airport on flight from Bangkok carrying a suitcase full of cocaine on May 19 last year.

The 57-year-old grandmother’s case made headlines after the judge ordered she be put to death via a firing squad.

Following her arrest Sandiford told police she had been forced to move the drugs after threats were made to her family by a drugs cartel.

She implicated Dougall and two other men, one of them Dougall’s partner, 44-year-old Julian Ponder, as her accomplices.

The other three were handed lesser sentences. Sandiford’s case has led to widespread outrage about Indonesia’s harsh sentencing regime.

However, Dougall claimed to the Mail that Sandiford was "pure evil" and "not the innocent she would like people to believe".

"Everyone thinks she's this poor naive granny, but she's not. She doesn't deserve any sympathy; I've been told by many people in Bali and Britain that she's been bringing drugs into the country for 25 years."

I agree...it does sound harsh..but cmon if you know that a country is notorious for severe punishment for crimes like this, why take that chance? It sounds like the thing with her son being threatened might just be a defense. If you let greed get the better of you then somewhere along the line you will end up paying.

Yeah, we have an ever growing muslim population here in Australia, and there have been reports of a few cases of Sharia law being used by some members of the muslim community, illegally, but some members of the muslim community wont it to be legal to practice here. Like it is legal for the females to wear full body and face coverings in public at present. I don't agree with any of it, as we are not an islamic country but you have to watch what you say in certain places around certain people or you are labelled a racist and there are some nut cases who get really worked up over it all (on both sides).

At least your PM was right in telling Fundamentalist Muslims who don't like Australia because there's not legal Sharia law there and they're mad that they are not in an Islamic country to go the fuck back to the country where they came from or to a Muslim country with Sharia law where they would be happy.

A similar incident took place somewhat close to where I live (Toronto) - an honor killing. My memory is foggy, but apparently this 18 year-old girl (muslim) was killed by her father because she either married or wanted to marry an atheist - which brought "great shame" to their family. Afterwards, the minister of immigration held a press conference and said something along the lines of, "We will not tolerate honor killings. If you're not happy about it, don't bother trying to relocate here."

You hit the nail on the head. If she was Chinese, Japanese, Indian, or something other than white and middle class nobody would care.
