How do you guys do it in a tactful manner?
How do you determine, either directly or indirectly, a person's disposition towards drugs?

I'm always eager to expand my circle of tripper friends, but I find the subject extremely hard to approach. I figure an indirect approach would work best, say, ask if they like X, and if they do, there's a good chance they like Y. I find people's taste in music to have some degree of positive correlation to their openness to new experiences, and hence their openness to drugs. If I find someone who likes psytrance, for example, there's a very very good chance they're into psychedelics or will respond to them favorably. Or, if they enjoy the works of Aldous Huxley, then I use that to segue into drug discussion.

Sometimes, often times, you give up a little info about yourself, and they will give up some info about themselves. If the info you give them is drug-related, there is a good chance they will reciprocate with information of the same kind. Even if you just say something very casually, their response says a lot. Sometimes you just know that people are drug users by either obvious "intoxication" or just a certain attitude.

I dont socialize with non drug users anymore since I finished school. I was friends with quite a few of them but we never hang out anymore and hardly ever speak so I guess I just grew apart from them; no regrets.

If you work in the food industry, its very easy to talk about drugs. First things first.........you dont come out & say, hey, do you guys like doing drugs. No, what you want to say when you're standing around talking is, do you drink or party? If people are comfortable with you in conversation about anything else, they wont have a problem telling you if they party or not.

Usually people will say they smoke weed but most people wont come out & say if they do anything harder. Once you talk about weed with them & you hang out & smoke some weed with them & they feel comfortable being around you, talking about other drugs will come naturally.

Same here......most of my friends in high school were non drug users but I had a few that smoked pot. Once college came around, I hung out less & less with the friends that didnt indulge. Not to say they were judgemental, then again, it was only weed but if it was anything stronger, I wouldnt have told them so you definitely drift apart, especially when your non drug friends are always at the bar getting drunk & thats the last place I wanted to be............

looolll, usually i meet people by saying, "hi my name is ____, i love to smoke weed"

With opiates I have found it to be you find out who else gets high through other people. At least when your addicted, you find out who else is addicted, who else you can get high with, who needs a ride, who knows where good shits at, etc etc. Junkie Culture

I never bring up drugs directly, it is always a indirect method. When I usually have a conversation with someone, I usually ask if they like to party? If the conversation goes, we would go into "so what type of parties do you like to attend?" If they mention frat house party I assume alcohol. If I ever get around to talking about rave parties then the subject tends to drift towards ecstasy. I also ask about what type of music they are into. If electronic dance music, I would ask what type, and do they rave? Classical rock I generally think cannabis.

At least the social drugs I can normally indirectly bring it up by asking if they like to party. The other drugs are tougher such as opiates or the hard drugs.
