Breakthrough Pain!

What are you chronic pain patients prescribed for breakthrough pain?
On top of my reg. 50mcg fent patches I'm given a few (6) 8mg dilaudid.
I find the only way I get relief is an 8mg IV or 16 plug... How the hell is that enough for a month?
Ugh I'm sick of this shit.
My doc went out of town a while back and no one would fill my script... After 6 months of fent and dilaudid and Percocet I lost it during w/d. My pain was so intense, I've been so against suicide my entire life but broke and woke up in ICU on a ventilator after an overdose on a tricyclic... Although I wasn't really myself, I kinda lost control and was IV'ing 112 mg dilaudid daily.
I can't do that again, I'm not religious but I'm praying, praying to something that I have the strength to never falter like that again... Can't hurt my family like that, I breathe through their lungs.

I take 100mg MS Contin and then Oral Morphine for breakthrough pain - fortunately I've got a lot so I can take it in high doses.

sounds like you need to make an arrangement with your doctor so youre not caught out in the same situation again. this time of year can be particularly tricky for people dependent on different drugs. talk to your dr about getting scripts that are post-dated in the future before they go wherever, or arrange for another doc who is willing to work with you in such a situation - through your primary doc.
