Television Breaking Bad

has been built entirely on a web of deceit and bullshit - and on top of all that, it's all been financially supported by an illegal narcotics trade innately tied to violence and suffering that may very well cause serious legal or physical harm to her and her children... and she somehow sucks as a person because she wasn't cool with that?

you missed my entire point. the deceit and bullshit is how walt dealt with her, because she is the way she is. fuck her, if she wasn't such a pretentious and abnoxious cunt, he would have been able to be more honest with her.

I guess that's your opinion if you want it to be. The character from the outset is flawed. So is every character on this show, so are almost all characters in any fiction.

these bitches aren't simply flawed. they are monstrous. the writing on this show is bloody terrible.

that's normal, that's natural.

hahahh lol. sure. this show is more fantasy than natural or real. what about those two cartel hitmen? are they real?

my arse.

Would it somehow have made a better story if she was just like "OK, cool!" and her and Walt become some Bonnie & Clyde duo cooking meth and living large together? Hell no, that would be cheesy. Would it be better if the character was written "stronger" from the onset? Who can say, but if that were the case they wouldn't have been able to use most of the plot devices of Walt trying to - and mostly being successful at - hiding his other life over the entirety of the first two seasons. It would have been a totally different story.

no that option would be equally shit. but with drama, there are more than just polar extremes as options.

Same goes for Marie, she lives this bullshit sheltered existence shoplifting and putting people down to get her off... and then when something legitimately dangerous effects her she breaks down into a completely new realm of emotional turmoil.

no excuse for this miserable character. oh how ironic, she criticises drug users and then shoplifts. is that meant to be clever?

I didn't really see Jesse's girlfriend as a strong woman at all. She had a more hip personality, she had a snappy wit, but she was by far the weakest of the bunch. She was a sucker for losers and getting high and she paid the ultimate price for it. I'm sure she had much stronger opinions on which Kate Bush album is the best, but do you REALLY think that character could have handled the emotional conflict Skylar was faced with as deftly as she did? She couldn't even handle her own pussy ass shortcomings as a person.

you missed my point. there have only really been three female characters in the show. i'm not comparing them to each other, but noting how badly they've all been treated by the writers.

My god you seem to hate this show, L2R.

I'm not one of those people who feels the need to defend my favorite shows from the people who dislike them, but you have spouted so much hate for it that I need to ask, why do you watch it?

More support from me here, kind sir ;)

IDK man, I don't have a problem with the show, in fact I actually enjoy watching it, but I still agree with a lot of what L2R says about it. Criticism ≠ Hate.

nah, i don't hate the show, i just hate the female characters in it.

the show is cheap cartoony drama, much alike my initial reaction to true blood, but over the few seasons each, tb has demonstrated a greater production quality overall. like nate in six feet under, every time i see these women i'm like "fuckin hell won't you die already!". =D

still, that last shot of the most recent season pissed me off. stupid accidental ambiguity is completely avoidable. i am questioning whether i continue watching or not.

the ONLY reason BL loves BB is the drug theme. had it been prostitution or gambling, no one here would give two shits about this show.

I disagree. I know a lot of non-drug people who think the show is fantastic.

Weeds is popular because it's about marijuana.

Breaking Bad is popular because it's a good show.

the show is cheap cartoony drama

I see it as a dark comedy/ drama with extremely high production values and generally very good performances. It has some over the top elements, but it is very well aware of it's caricatures. It's supposed to be cartoony; it's clearly not attempting to be serious television drama. I like it for what it is.

I got that point, I was just trying to explain that without the characters having been developed the way they have been - it'd be an entirely different show. It's not really a matter of just dialing in a different personality or wittier dialogue coming out of their mouths or something, it's the essentials that drive the entire story. The female characters are ostensibly boring, stereotypical and suburban (Skylar is pretentious?! wtf) because that's the jumping off point for essentially every single plot device and conflict in the narrative.

1) Man finds out he is dying.

2) Man hatches hairbrained scheme to provide after his death by cooking meth.

3) In order for this to work effectively, Man needs to keep family in dark about the whole affair until he's dead and gone.

4) Hilarity ensues...

See? The fundamental concept of Breaking Bad could not be done without these type of characters. It's one thing if you just don't like the show, but that doesn't appear to be the problem. I wouldn't "like" either the Marie or Skylar character if I had to hang out with them every day either, but thankfully I'm not in Junior High homeroom with any of them and it's just a television program that I only have to appreciate their relevance within in regards to their advancing the story, which I most certainly do.

these bitches aren't simply flawed. they are monstrous. the writing on this show is bloody terrible.

I'm really not trying to be a dick here (really), but considering that you just compared True Blood favorably to this show, I have to ask - aside from Sookie's fairy oasis and sexxxxy vampire Eric, of course - what DO you think is good television writing if Breaking Bad ain't it?

You didn't think that was fantastic writing in the Season 3 episode "Fly" where Walter's fear of "lab contamination" was used metaphorically to let the audience know his whole entire scheme was essentially a total failure since he had more-or-less lost his family before checking out, directly because (see #3 above) of his efforts, and he was now a man with little to live for outside of making sure Skylar took the damn money and providing his third "adopted" child (alluded to through MORE EXCELLENT WRITING in the finale's opening flashback) Jesse with a little guidance before he finally kicks the bucket? How about the dialogue between Walt and Gus on memory at their little dinner party?

I could be totally wrong, of course. I would love for that to be the case and for you to open my mind to even higher quality television writing that I'm apparently missing out on, so lemme know!

perspective: i hated the fly episode more than any other. its function was obvious, but it was tedious and boring as bat shit.

i've already listed several tv series which are far better than this a page or so ago in response to someone posting something like "best show ever! name one better show!". have a look.

Loving or hating "Fly" is essentially what determines how much you love or hate the show. "Fly" is the episode that explains the entire direction of the series. It explains every improbability. It tells you what every aspect of this show is about. It spells out for the people who didn't get it already, that this show isn't about realism, it is a story of surrealism and fate. Walt is fated to do what he does. As is Jesse. As are all of the characters surrounding them. It is perhaps the most important episode of season 3.

This show is not supposed to be hyper-realistic. At all. I never expect my television or literature to be hyper-realist. It is an unfair expectation. Not every creator wants to create a world that fits the confines of reality. Television, film, and literature are the creations of man in mans image. Take it or leave it. If you prefer something closer to 100% reality, stick to The Wire or Treme.

And seriously, saying the writing in True Blood is better than this? Are you fucking kidding me? I like True Blood and all, but it is still sad for me to see Alan Ball fall so far from American Beauty and Six Feet Under into the crappy, corny dialogue and contrived plot devices used in that show.

i never connected true blood to american beauty or six feet under, but i am serious. anyways, it's cool, man. i simply don't think anything i've seen in BB has been remotely clever. what you describe in the fly episode i find lame. i don't need it to be hyper-realistic, i just expect something less .... cheap (imo). another exampl is the first shot of the second season (i complained about it here, i think). walt burns money and then changes his mind and throws it in the pool. seriously, the cheapness of that drama is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

sorry, i'll stop ranting. my criticisms of the show should have no impact on your enjoyment.

ah carnivale, i have a love/hate with that one. i loved the show and the idea, but i hate that they cut it just as it got really fucking amazing.

now THAT was surreal

Sorry for the lack of multi-quoting but I had to address this. Sooo what about the other millions of views, various critics and those people who get to vote at the Emmys who also love the show? Surely they can't all be drug-addled bluelighters. ;)

yup, they're all various parts of damien and greenfalcon. you know those guys are kinda like voltrons.

Fly is my favorite episode. You've used the word 'cheap' a couple of times. I'm not sure what you mean. Breaking Bad isn't a work of genius. It's not incredibly complex. But it is a tense, well produced, original television series. There is a fair amount of suspension of disbelief required and perhaps and unnecessary amount of melodrama but it's clearly better than most of the garbage on television. Bryan Cranston deserves an award or two for his performance, in my opinion. Heisenberg is fucking bad ass. I've never seen a TV show portray drugs in the same way. Crazy meth dealing Mexicans and cancer ridden school teachers cooking up in camper vans as main characters. Fuck it. I don't know. It's better than four guys in an apartment or another cop show. And some of the cinematography, particularly for television, is beautiful. I'd be really proud to work on this show, personally. (And, Six Feet Under is great.)

that's a fair assessment. what i mean by cheap is artificial drama. but you're right, there is so much worse on tv. my criticisms are only counterpointing the many "best show ever" comments here. after all, i did watch the whole thing so far.
