A woman running for city council in the northwestern Brazilian town of Itacoatiara was arrested on Sunday — election day — for allegedly distributing packets of cocaine to residents who promised to vote for her.

According to a report by the Brazilian website TNONline, 32-year-old Carme Cristina da Silva Lima aroused the suspicion of police when they spotted a large crowd gathered around her car.

As police moved in, the crowd quickly dispersed along with Lima and an unidentified man who was also in the car. A search of the vehicle turned up hundreds of cocaine packets attached to leaflets with instructions on voting for Lima.

"According to locals, she had been distributing the drugs since early in the morning, on condition that people vote for her," Police chief Daniel Ottoni told TNONline.

The candidate has since been charged with electoral corruption and drug dealing. A conviction would mean Lima would be unable to serve as a public official for a period of at least eight years.

am I the only one who thinks this is freakin halirious? maybe its the bowl i just smoked but i cant help but smile after reading this article.

i wonder how common of a practice this actually is in politics, at home, and worldwide. The indian article makes assume it might be more common then i realize.
 
^No American politician would be so kind as to give out free drugs, that's socialism8(. They want you to be sober as they rape you.
 
hell yeah if I was president I would dumb tons of diacetylmorphine in the water supply so that way everyone would become an opiate addict and if they tried to leave my country they would get sick within 2 days and come right back to the warm embraces of my countries water supply.. LOL MU AHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!!!

at first i was going to say, just a press stunt. but then i wonder, from where, indeed, did all that coke come from, since this is a political figure?
