and btw, did any of chicago characters go see beck the other night?

No, the Riv is in Uptown up the street from my apartment. The Chicago Theatre is in the Loop on State Street.

I wanted to go to Beck, but my fucking work schedule prevented that. :X

You're right. Now that I think about it, the first two times I went to the Riviera I had to do a lot of back tracking, not expecting it to be so far north and all. What the heck is right by the Riviera then? I'm assuming you'd know if you live up there, but I don't know. I guess I could look into it more myself.

You going to Gordo/Kottke ? I think I am just going to see them @ the Barrymore instead of Chicago b/c I don't dig Park West that much..

band: bloodsimple (ex members of Vision of Disorder) w/ "surprise" reunion of VOD
date: last night
venue: shitty club in levittown, ny

i've been a fan of VOD for 9 years, and i was upset when they broke up a few years ago. last night's show was promoted as bloodsimple headling, w/ a "very special guest for encore" so of course the VOD rumors were flying. a few days before the show, my friend, the promoter, confirmed that it definitely is VOD, and that they'd be playing a few older VOD songs. the venue was full of anticipation. everyone came out for this- and went crazy when all the members of VOD took the stage. they opened w/ "choke" (how predictable) and then played 3 older songs- starting w/ "worthlesS". i didn't wipe the smile off my face all night. wow. my life is complete now.

band: from autumn to ashes
date: last night
venue: the donkey, long island, ny

last night was quite possibly the last show for from autumn to ashes. john cox (guitarist) is leaving the band, though it hasn't been officially announced yet. francis mark, the drummer/ back up singer, has his new side project, biology, going on, which is sucking up most of his time. so, FATA is in for either major, major changes or an end altogether.

that being said, last night meant a lot to a lot of people. the venue was packed- i've never seen that place nearly that packed in all that shows i've gone to there. all 4 bands- magnetic north, the sleeping, as tall as lions, and from autumn to ashes- are from long island, so tons of friends and family were there to support them. they played a good mix of music from all 3 albums. overall, a good night. too bad it was so full of small teenagers, but we took care of that problem ;)

still mad that I missed this.:( at least I got to see VOD once back in the day with kids swinging from the ceiling and shit.

The Aragon is the other theatre right by the Riv. The Green Mill (best jazz club in the city) is on the corner and now the Kinetic Playground is another live venue added to the area. Park West isn't so bad...beers are too expensive though, but the venue sounds great. I saw Derek Trucks Band there last winter.

im fucking jealous.

wow, dan and jesse, you guys don't get around much anymore, huh? ;) that shit was months ago! hehe

that was the whole thing- they hadn't played ANYWHERE in years... so yeah, it was exciting. those guys all live on long island, so we knew that if there was going to ever be a reunion show, it'd be here. and i couldn't be happier.

I hit an all-ages metal/hardcore show that Sonata Arctica was headlining two nights ago. I was *pretty* impressed, though they ought to know that nobody wants to hear their slow songs, which comprised 50% of their set.

The best part of the evening was a tie between getting to sit in on an interview of the band where I asked the keyboardist if it was true that all Finns carried knives, and seeing the 15 year old hardcore kids get dressed up in their shittiest clothing and get dropped off by their soccer moms, and picked up by 10:00 PM. =D

Hardcore kids at a Sonata Arctica show?

I think you might be mistaken. These must not be the same hardcore kids who tear shit up at Hatebreed shows and do kickflips off of the stage during Madball.

14. dauðalagið
15. popplagið

At first I sat in row W!! next to the coolest bluelighter (well, for that night ;)) Finder. Amiina was there as usual to prep us for Sigur Ros. The women all wore dresses, 2 red 2 blue (for Icelandic pride, aw). I thought their set was more polished than I've ever seen. The highlight for me was Hemipode because they seemed to be really into it and it's one of their more pop-like songs. The last two songs they played included the musical saw so that was a treat as well.

At intermission I went up to say hello to my best friend and roommate Katie who was sitting front row center. I noticed while I was up there that there was a seat next to her open. I went back to my seat though and thought nothing of it. Sigur Ros came out shortly thereafter. They opened, typically, with glósóli. I also really enjoyed The Nothing Song this time around. Well, I've enjoyed it every time so it's hard to compare. The next highlight for me was Gong. I have recently been getting more and more into Gong as I think it's a fantastically well-rounded song. After that, hoppípolla was the next song I remember distinctly. This was when I finally realized that they had different graphics behind them than the past two times I had seen them. During hoppípolla they appropriately had images of young children hopping in puddles. I almost died right then and there.

THEN, I decided to randomly check my phone to see what time it was. I saw I had missed about 5 calls and had 2 text messages. Katie was frantically trying to get me to come down to sit with her because the young man next to her told her that his brother wasn't able to come. I grabbed my purse and practically ran up to the first row. WOW. I was literally less than 20 feet away from Jonsi. I watched all the band member's technique and took a lot in regarding how diciplined they were (though only Kjartan has been classically trained) throughout the rest of the show. Orri (drummer) was extremely animated and seemed particularly into the show. Jonsi's voice was better than I've ever heard it... an added plus. heysátan (the haystack), dauðalagið (death song) and popplagið (pop song) was IMO by far the best run of the show. They deffinetly know how to end on a high note. :)

Overall, as I expected, the show had a lot more recent songs than the latter. I know some people were dissapointed by this. But if I were in a band I would get tired of playing Vaka for the 300th time too. I wasn't let down by this shift, I embrace it as I can't be let down by my boys. ;) God, I'm obsessed.
