Fair enough. I wouldn't really drown a sack full of puppies, though. They are too cute. ;)

Back to Deerhoof, I found their performance to be so abrasive and unappealing I would be hardpressed to even call it music. I've listened to some of their stuff here and there to try and understand why they get props around indie circles and am baffled every time. It is one thing to push the envelope and be experimental but it is another to be loud and obnoxious whilst trying and set yourself apart from every one else. I just don't find anything musical about them. :\

That's kind of a backhanded comment, dude.

I am all about seeking new music and stretching my tastes as much as possible. However, I'm not going to give lip service to some noise band merely because they are "different." I ain't my loss, I can assure you that much.

When you seem to ask a sincere question wondering what I see in a band, which I had merely stated that I has enjoyed, and then duely explained per your request what I found in them, just to have you blather back about how you found them obnoxious and loud. You didn't really want to find out what I saw in them, you just wanted a chance to turn your nose up as something you don't like. Go listen to you genre of choice and shut the hell up about stuff your mind is too small to understand.

That was a forehanded comment, dude, and here's a fuck off cherry on top. I am all for people enjoying what they like, and you are just trying to shit on someone else's sunday. Go enjoy your Artic Monkies pebble brain. I don't care to pretened to have a conversation with someone who had their mind made up beforehand. Stop wasting my time, or go start a thread about how much you don't like them and why. I was enthralled by their performance, and it was a wonderful gift for me to experience them live. It's not every show that I feel as if I have learned something new about music afterwards. And I feel bad that you had to do this whole bit of false conversation to satisfy your inner need to state your distaste and lack of understanding for their music.

I hope you never figure why people like music like this and slowly turn into your parents.

It was a sincere question; I wanted to know what you liked about them. I then merely expanded on what I didn't enjoy about them to which you responded with your backhanded holier than thou comment. You then go on to get pissed off because I made such an expansion because, obviously, you're so completely advanced for liking such a group I must be small-minded in comparison.

You'll note I never insulted you personally for liking them but you seem to be unable to resist looking down your nose at me for not "getting it" as they say. I am hardly trying to shit on your good time. In fact, I'm glad you had a great experience at a live show--there is really nothing quite like it.

As far as the Arctic Monkeys go, I'm not going to lie and say I didn't like their record; it's simply pop music that isn't going to win awards nor change the course of music. I enjoy it for what it is but I would never put it on a pedestal. I fail to see the relevence of bringing that comment about except to take another swing at me.

For the record, the Arctic Monkies have been nominated for several awards, and I think they won at least one of them. Not that that matters, but thought I would mention it.

My comment, "Welp, your loss then. Stick to what you know and like." How is that a backhanded, holier than though comment? I take it to be a common part of speach, a phrase often said in situations like these. If you took offense to that, then I dunno what to say to you. If you found the second half of the quote, the part about listening to what you know and like to be offensive to you, then again I really dunno what to say to you. I feel like I am having an argument with my girlfriend here...really.

And yes I do think I am advanced for liking deerhoof. I can fly and bend spoons with my mind ever since I "got it." You presumed beforehand that because I like deerhoof, that I would be part of some group of people you have already made your mind up about, the type you find pretentious who listen to bands like deerhoof.

And yes, I brought the Artic Monkeys to take another swing at you. I am glad you are keeping up. Good show. You may end up like deerhoof eventually after all.

I had a good time at their show and felt like I learned something new about music. You shouldn't even be on my radar except you had to come out and let me know how much you don't like them. I thank you for raining on my parade.

Now for fuck sake, let's both go find something else to think about.

You have to try to see them then. You won't be dissapointed. It is a major happening, especially the first time.

I think the phrase, "deckiestdeckies " brings out the evil i me. Or maybe it's all the devil music...

i would imagine so! i cant believe ive never actually heard them til recently. the song "it overtakes me" was what got me into them. i was under the influence of some heavy shit at the time so it had even MORE stimulation on my brain than it normally would, when it breaks out into that REALLY peaceful shit, it makes me feel like a million bucks. after i heard that song, i was instantly hooked. now ive sought out so much of their stuff and not been disappointed yet. i really like their sound. such a great band. anything specific you'd reccomend for someone new to their stuff? i like epic drawn out very psychadelic stuff if that helps you to choose. any suggestions WILL be put to use and very much appreciated.

You could explain that it wasn't meant to be an insult, but say that you're sorry for offending someone, because it wasn't your intention. That's just what I'm picturing someone doing differently. I don't know; I'm just throwing out ideas here. :\

Maybe he presumed that someone could give him an epiphany, or at least a strong enough arguement for him to give them another listen. Too bad all he got was some guy who's acting like he has a right to not be offended. If you're so down with listening to what your like, why can't you stomache the inevitable contrary opinion?

My only observation is that your parade is easily rained upon.

For the record, I've never heard deerhoof=D

OH please, let it drop already. You are only trying to stir things up further. Finder and I made up in a PM. I was just still in the glow of actually finally understanding he band myself when I was all of a sudden found to be defending this glow. As I stated, I didn't like them at first either, and then after the show, I finall got it. Oh well, no worries. I apologize for going off the handle. It happens to the best of us from time to time. Peace be with you all.

Catfish agreed in private he'd migrate over to pitchfork so he can stroke it with all the other hipsters while listening to deerhoof. ;)

You'd be surprised at how much perceived extra gurth and length one has while listening to deerhoof. I also have discovered that listening to deerhoof non stop helps you to grow a full bodied ironic mustache.

Public apologiez for my strong reaction to Finder's dislike of deerhoof. I am from hence forward vowing to lay off the energy drinks. Taurine makes a man mean...

First off, lets lay off the insults. I don't know how many times we have to go over this but I'll make a simple mspaint diagram since nobody seems to be getting it:
musicbrain.jpg

What's more one's brain size doesn't necessarily signify their intelligence level either but we'll just go with the 19th century stereotype anyway. Though this seems like a tangent I just want to make clear that we should keep personal insults away from our opinions. I know how difficult this can be with all these metalheads running around ;) but lets try to keep it respectful (yet lively!).

Ryan! Hooray another Flaming Lips convert. :) I'm not sure exactly what all you listened to but you should definetely start with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. It's a great newish Lips album. Like CatfishRivers already said you should really see them live... I saw them twice this summer and I wished everyone I knew could have seen it too. :)

^^^ hell yes! well like i said "it overtakes me" was the song that got me into them. and believe it or not, the first time ever that ive heard them! ive never heard a flaming lips song until last weekend! but i liked that song ALOT... so i checked out a couple albums, i forget which ones now ill look into that and get back to you, but i wouldnt mind seeing them live at all! ill check that album out btw!

I saw Takka Takka, Architecture in Helsinki and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah last night in Central Park. Takka Takka was like some Hootie and the Blowfish sounding band that did not catch much interest at all...Architecture in Helsinki was one of those bands that I loved every 2 out 3 parts to their songs, but them they'd play a part that just really didn;t sound like it was meant to tbe there to me...other than that they were ok, although I dunno if I would pay to go see them specifically. And then, CYHSY played. I had seen them almost exactly a year ago play at South Street Seaport, and they were amazing. So much energy. So tight. But then last night, they seemed bored. The vocalist changed the way he sings to the songs in so many places, which could be cool if done well, but to me just sounded lazy and bored. The songs last year seemed crisp and bouncy, dancable and new, seemed tired and played out and awash with more distortion than is good for them...and they played only 1 or 2 new songs since the show I see last year, which was dissapointing. And the one song they called new has been around for over a year anyhow on various demo tapes and live tapes. So, I think CYHSY needs to take a break from touring and get back into the groove...like I said, they seemed bored, and at times, it was definitely an effort on my part to remain entertained...

Sufjan Stevens tonight...I wish my concert week went in reverse. Then I would have ended with The Flaming Lips! But, Sufjan Stevens is tonight...7th row!

Sufjan Stevens blew my socks off. I was in the 7th row, sit down (tiny seats and friendly elbows) event...it was so amazing though. I am so glad I did not have the a let down experience as described above. I saw him at Town Hall in NYC, and the sound was superb there. It was so incredibly intimate. They had a screen behind them that alternated between trippy/pretty graphics and footage of the band from the actual tour...it was really nice and humorous at times...they threw these inflatable superman toys and also inflatable santas into the audience...over all everything was great...I felt the set list covered much more ground than just Illinois and Avalanche. He even did a Christmas song...and the theme song for the tour was jaw dropping. Totally cool evening.

And again, Finder, sory about the other day. I really dunno what got into me. I wanna extend the double forgive me handshake to you. I keep thinking of the whole exchange, and it troubles me that I would have gotten angry enough to act out like I did. So, once again to Finder, and all the folks who post here, sorry about the grouchism.

it should be commonly regarded that no metalheads have brains, since headbanging destroys approximately 50 braincells with each sudden change in forward/reverse velocity.

were all actually zombies in disguise. this common reoccuring theme in metal music is simply to prepare mainstream society for our inevitable takeover.
