^They're playing down in Lafayette at Elliott Hall of Music. I believe tickets are still available as well.

GWAR came to town but I didn't feel like shelling out bones for 10 other shitty metal bands and commuting to bumblefuck to see them in a parking lot.

I'm going to see the Flaming Lips tonight! And I just found out that Deerhoof is opening for them!!! What a cool surprise! And I got floor tickets! Wooot!

Coming up on Thursday:

Gigantour 2006!

Megadeth

Lamb of God, Opeth, Arch Enemy

Over Kill, Into Eternity, Sanctity (??), the smashup (??)

Uniondale, Long Island @ Nassau Coliseum, September 28th.

...excited for the show, but annoyed that I wont be able to be very intoxicated due to this whole new career thing I got going on now. :p

we'll figure something out!

my computer's dumb and slow sometimes. blah. but yeah, we'll do our best to figure something out for that night. i'd definitely be down for meeting you in the city before/after the show. (and i'm sure the rest of the crew would be too!)

i was thinking... on halloween it will be 2 years since we last saw each other. so sad:(

btw, i said something to my friend (who was in the car with me in the parking lot when i first met you hehehe) and he said that i can be the trip planner since i have all the friends in ny hah. theres gonna be me, my friend keith, and my friend chris (and maybe chris' sister) but we DEFINATELY intend to get drunk before the show, we're bringing whiskey and what not. ill keep in touch and let you know as the dates approach, but yes, DEFINATELY keep a relatively open schedule. me and keith are driving separately cause chris is staying a week, we might stay for another day after the show too, but not sure yet. ill let ya know!

Flaming Lips was such a gift...so much magic. They did this trick with the audience, involving 3000 laser pens they handed out to the audience and then at a prescribed time, we all shot them at Wayne while he held a giant mirror from outer space to shoot the beams back at us. They said they will only being this one time ever, and it was pretty cool. There was also a precious moment when all of the laser pen holders were shooting a single balloon in the center of the floor level audience. It was like some creature made of red undulating dots. It is amazing how easy it is really to make beauty. All we needed was some light an a balloon...amazing, the whole night. Deerhoof opened, and were just so damn good as well. Now, I just gotta wait until Wednesday for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and then Friday for Sufjan Stevens!!!

since sufjan was kind of a letdown, im treating myself to DJ shadow next week :)

What made the Sufjan Stevens show a let down? I am supposed to see him this Friday...should I also go buy DJ Shadow tickets in advance just to be ready for the let down?

Can you explain what is appealing about Deerhoof? I saw them open for Wilco a couple years ago and wanted to drown a sack full of puppies.

Can't really put my finger on it, actually. I'll try to diagnose my disapointment, though.

1) we sat very very close, second row. So i got the horn section on the PA, and also the horns pointed at me. They wern't loud to the point of distraction, but thier presence highlighted just how similar the horn parts are for the songs on the setlist.

2) the stage costumes didn't come off as clever. They came off as half-assed.

3) the venue was the fox theater. They usually host operas and other high culture. It was a sitdown show. I would have probably had a much better time had I caught him a year ago at the 40 watt in Athens.

4) the timing was bad, I guess. He didn't play anything new. He stuck to stuff off of Illinoise (primarily). There were a couple of tracks off of avalanche, and one from michigan. I've played all that so much, the luster was worn off, I guess.

But hey, most of those are completely personal problems. You might get a way better show, and you might think its fantastic.

im goin to some hippy jam band/downtempo electronic festival this weekend. Its the kind of renegade way out in the country ordeal. Lets just say, im not exactly going for the music, and this is gonna be a blast.

I can see how you would think so, especially when going to see Wilco.

Here is what I find appealing about Deerhoof: They push the boundaries of music in a controlled, yet explosively chaotic way. They just had so much energy, and just when you thought they were about to come abaprt at the seems, they would hem it in and stop on a dime. I like them because they are doing something new in an otherwise often boring smorgesboard of bands that copy each other way too much, and end up with so few bands with their own unique bend on music.

I hated them when I first stumbled upon them myself. But I kept ending up hearing them here and there, and I found that I was actually really drawn to what they were doing. It was something very unlike what other bands are doing today.

The wanting to drown a sack full of puppies thing is not such a healthy impulse. Usually, when I don't like a band I am watching, I just go get another drink and have fun people watching. I guess I just love puppies too much to let any band step between me and my love for them...I would die to protect those puppies from you. That, is a promise.

Those are usually pretty fun. They do have a scarey underbelly if you get pulled into the land of the dark hippies. But you will prolly have fun. Who's playing?

Fair enough. I wouldn't really drown a sack full of puppies, though. They are too cute. ;)

Back to Deerhoof, I found their performance to be so abrasive and unappealing I would be hardpressed to even call it music. I've listened to some of their stuff here and there to try and understand why they get props around indie circles and am baffled every time. It is one thing to push the envelope and be experimental but it is another to be loud and obnoxious whilst trying and set yourself apart from every one else. I just don't find anything musical about them. :\

That's kind of a backhanded comment, dude.

I am all about seeking new music and stretching my tastes as much as possible. However, I'm not going to give lip service to some noise band merely because they are "different." I ain't my loss, I can assure you that much.
