Boy bands and Popstars, don't we all love em!

The corporate music machine is made up, in part, by people who have a clever ear for catchy tunes, and sign producers and songwriters who can deliver such work. Sure the production makes up a large part of that but I think the actual songwriting itself has to be pretty spot-on for a track to be pushed by a record company (and thus make it big).
Now, on a different topic, whoever said this:
dare someone to try it at the next meetup. make up some dance. i don't mean like popstars style i mean like our dance style. hahaha
well on friday night at HK i saw these 4 guys up on stage doing this funny dance where you step forward in little steps, lean over, roll your hands then step back, stand upright again and start punching the air madly. im sure u all know what i mean, its the good old mario cokehead dance.. anyway these guys were having great fun taking the piss out of the marios, i have never laughed so hard i swear i nearly broke ribs doubled over in stiches over these guys, they had it down perfect
wink.gif
So I think we should dance like that and start a mario-pisstaking-trend at the next meetup. or something.

I'm into being in a band and being a star and a popstar at that.As long as it is in alignement with God (dess) and the heart then it is good.Who wants to get a band extra going?

pop music does not sell because of the music itself. the pop music industry is all about marketing, and in particular, distribution.
people seldom buy it cause they really like it.. they buy it cause its there on tv and on the radio and in the stores, it sticks in their head, and its whats getting promoted and sold, and its what theyre told is the latest big thing.
one thing i am interested to see is where pop music goes next.. cause on one hand the industry is squeezing as much as it can out of this pop group fad.. but on the other, people arent gonna listen to it forever..
anyone have any ideas what they think is the next big thing ?
and please, before some of you jump in and say trance and hard house, we're talking POP music here..
oh btw, oceanboy - wtf ??

Ok now maybe I live a sheltered life, but I have never heard that Hamster song and quite frankly I don't want to!!!!!
Half of these bands I've never even fucking heard of. The only reason I know of NSYNC or whatever the fuck they're called??!!??, is because a girl I work with sings some of their shit and I had to ask her what the fuck that song was she just happened to sing out loud LOL!!!! blech!!!
Now if there's a fucked up song ATM then that's the wassup song WASSUP!!!!!!! and I bet you any fucking money that'll get to no 1 if it isn't already (no I don't follow the top 40 charts!!!!).
These groups are just tools!!!!!!! and should be exterminated.

i think the hamster song is kinda cute. but i didnt think there was a connection to boybands/girlgroups... who did that song?

What you talking 'bout Willis... um, i mean Oceanboy? ditto mikeysammy, wtf?
My favourite pop group is of a slightly older generation, I have to say i have a soft spot for Take That. The Ulitmate Boyband.
hehee

i have to agree with mona... every boy band started after Take That is a copy-wannabe. Take That were the originals.

Umm excuse me people!
NKOTB.

IN TONE: IN TUNE: IN TOUCH
Rbb: I haven't been able to see for the last half hour!!!

Remember when Mark Whalberg (sp?) had the group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. His brother (Danny ?) was in NKOTB. A bit of useless, random and rather sad information for you all. (why do I know this stuff?)
P.S. I still have the MM&TFB CD single of 'Walk on the wild side'.... It RoX!

prometheus...have to agree...New Kids On The Block released their first single in 1989...i know cos i was in grade 7...they were HUGE at my school...
*insert hand wave above the head* " woaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, hangin' tough.."

"East End boys and a West End girls..."
NKOTB rocked!

Mikey??!? Do you ACTUALLY believe that? Do you think people are that nieve? People dont buy it because they are told to. We are not robots YET. People still have a choice in what they buy.

He he, Mr Horse, you're showing your age (or lack of).. 'east end boys and west end girls' is a quote from a Pet Shop Boys song .. but if NKOTB did a cover or a song with that line in it, I apologise.. by the time they arrived on the scene I was going through my Cure stage
smile.gif

Re people only buying music because it's well-marketed, I think there's a certain truth to that. Shite like Nsync and Poptarts is aimed at the impressionable 13-16 yo female market.. even I had crap taste in music at that age (can anyone say Belinda Carlisle?).. and will listen to what their friends think is cool and what looks pretty on television. Say you are a 13 year old girl with no older siblings whose only musical input comes from Video Hits.. you are not only going to think you're SUPPOSED to like that stuff, you won't know any better cos music video shows never show anything else! (Except for Alchemy which is past your bedtime, and Rage, but even Rage shows the top 50 from 6am..)
The alternative is that we belong to a tiny minority which actually knows what good music is.. which is a depressing thought.. especially considering we can't agree with each other most of the time!

Hiyaha,
You said it in the first few sentences
Mirror;ie they are your mirror, just like everybody is.
A Question to all here;
What happens when you like a tune and you think that's good , I quite like that, then you find out it is from a band that you previously made a negative judgement about them for some peculiar reason(usually because you believed someone/thing else, that told you should think negatively about this band/group.)
Do you choose
1. Love (the path I recommend)
2. Negativity( gunk that you'll have to clear eventually(karma))
3. Indifference(freedom/non attachment/Varagya)
4. Oh that's that but it's not my preference right now (also freedom)
5. I'll like it until it gets in the top 40
(whose program are you following?)
5. A combo of the above.
For instance I love Fragma "Every time you need me " and I think it absolutely is awesome and beautiful and sends heaven down on me more in that moment.
Am I to not like it because
A. It sounds like "POP" (OH No ,pop some program says to not like pop, I have popphobia)
B.It's in the top 40
C.It's too positive and I might feel super wonderful and someone/thing said I could not feel so wonderful.
D. They are making lots of money out of it and so i won't support it because I am so Spiritual that money = bad?
E. I am jealous of them
F. I am soooo Underground and with it and hardcore and separate from Society that I won't allow myself to have fun with this song?
NOOO,You see
I
love it ,
That's the thing
I LOVE IT!
I love being happy,
I love feeling wonderful and happy
I love dancing to it and dancing anyway
It makes me feel beautiful
I love dancing to happy positive wonderful sounding joyous sounds that make feel blessed and happy to be alive.
I love Prancing
I love Skipping
Listening to the Spice Girls and Madonna makes me feel good , really good and I am happy for their success.
I love Love because love feels and is the nicest and that's the path I have chosen and I believe and know and all the ancient and modern intelligent writings say and back me up on this .

trouble: It was East-17 who did the cover, and yes, if the pet shop boys did the original, then I apologise and I am showing my age.
Just to chuck a spanner in the works... I know a lot of classical and jazz musicians (being one, you get to know a few) who think I listen to/make electronic music because of the huge influence of drugs in the scene, and they think that about everyone who listens to it. Is it true? Are their generalisations correct? (do I see a double standard taking place??
wink.gif
)
Dont generalise....none of us know why 13 year olds buy -=n-(kitchen)sink=- and the rest of them. Perhaps they ENJOY the music, perhaps the ENJOY the fantasy of wanting to be a popstar.
Dont believe the hype the guys

Hangin' Tough.... Best NKOTB song around, man that song was soooooo cool.
OMG I cant get that friggin song out of my head now (been stuck in there since I posted last night).

East 17 weren't before NKOTB...east 17 popped up around late 1991 with "House of Love"...don't ask me how i know, i just do!!

ya know what? - I understand and even agree with Oceanboy - okay - maybe not the skipping bit but I love mindless trashy pop as well. Not everything has to be cerebral and have meaning to be enjoyable.
and btw - NKOTB "You've got the right stuff" was their best single by far.
