Boozing is killing Brits in their 20s
By EMMA LITTLE, Health and Science Editor

A TOP doctor warns tonight that booze is killing more and more Brits in their 20s.
Professor Sir Ian Gilmore says cases of young people dying from liver disease caused by drink are at levels "just not seen 30 years ago".

He blames cheap spirits and 7.5 per cent cider such as Frosty Jack's that costs as little as £1.99 for three litres.

The Professor, world-renowned liver specialist and former president of the Royal College of Physicians, says weekend binges are no longer the problem. Youngsters are hitting the bottle ALL WEEK.

Sir Ian says: "We are seeing people as young as in their 20s dying."

His warning on BBC1's Panorama: Dying for a Drink? comes as figures show 7,000 patients aged 20-39 were admitted to hospital with alcohol-related liver disease last year.

More and more youngsters can afford booze - now 75 per cent cheaper in the shops in real terms than in 1980.

I never would have started drinking if I had the money to afford weed. That is why I started, to stretch how far a bag went.

Now I find my bags and jars empty, and myself stealing two beers for every one I buy. I hate this.

I just went three days w.o drinking and that's a record for the last few months, but I came back.

Fuck me sideways I need to start growing my own

*edit* this is coming out of the UK? Right on time with amy winehouses death being rumored to be connected to alcohol w/d's... i smell a media blitz

We have a huge alcohol problem here in Finland too. The way I see it, there are two reasons: first, and more importantly, life is getting so hectic, empty and miserable for a lot of people, especially young not finding a proper job, having problems with relationships etc, that you just need to get fucked up to cope (we also have some 20% of young people on antidepressants if my memory serves me right, so..) and secondly alcohol is so much more easily available and socially acceptable than other stuff so it's the drug of choice for most. Sad times.

And oh, alcohol is problematic choice for running from your problems also because it's enough to get really drunk just once a week that your serotonin levels never get a chance to get back to healthy levels. I stopped drinking and was able to quit citalopram and generally felt better than in ages after just some two months.

Wow talk about being on the same wavelength bro lol I read your first post about 20% being on antidepressants and I was going to say pretty much exactly what you did here. Shit snow balls out of control, you get dumped in a relationship or some other problem occurs and you jump in a bottle, and you stay there, and when you drink every day you SEEM clinically depressed and lots of us get stuck on pills. When you clean up and stop drinking, it all seems to magically go away

I just watched panorama dying for a drink... pretty much a tv version of the article :P

Did anyone else watch it? They showed really extreme examples (i.e. people drinking 11 litres of 7.5% ABV cider a day), that's pretty worrying because I'm sure tons of people will think 'oh I'm not that bad' and just carry on.

I just watched it too. Looks like the government are right in the drinks industries pockets, alienating all the health representatives and letting the drinks industry out-number any other group on the panel. Nice.

Are you some kind of incompetent? both weed and alcohol are very affordable. If you think either of these substances have put you in the poor house, I assure you that you have other issues.

Well, I'd say that substance abuse in general - be it alcohol, weed or heroin - is a result from other issues :P

That's prohibition for you - it just happens that one of the most deadly drugs is legal, small wonder people die from it in droves. This problem could be solved so easily, but instead of reforming drug laws, they rather let people suffer and die miserably.

It's culturally ingrained in european culture, after all.

No you fucking assclown, 'affordable' is a relative term. Bottom line -> X amount of dollars spent on cheap ass alcohol gets you fucked up longer and for less money than any bud worth the time to smoke will. You get drunk, a hit off a bowl goes WAY further than it would if you weren't, what bluelighter doesn't understand the concept of synergy?

Self righteous prick

I STARTED adding alcohol to my bud smoking to stretch a dollar back in high school. Eventually became addicted to the booze. I just happen to be broke as hell at the moment, and I get sick if I don't drink and that's why I ended up stealing. I hate that I put myself in that kind of position where I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack if I don't get a drink after a period of time.

10's of 1000s of dollars of medical bills and lay offs put us in the poor house, not the usual 50 dollar bag a week or so + ~5 dollars in cheap booze a day that I'd become used to.

You don't know how truly hooked you are until you don't have the money to maintain what you've been doing to yourself for the last 10 years. I never would have thought I would steal from a damn gas station.

I know right. With one hand pushing scientists out of the ACMD and with the other, bringing the alcohol industry closer.

Really shows whose interests they have at heart.

I've done a good amount of binge drinking but stopped completely now for health reasons. People just need an escape, and alcohol is so readily available. I don't think there's anything really special about it except that it's so easy to get. Just take a few minute walk and buy however much you want, no hassles at all. Imagine if people had the option of going to the store and picking up some shrooms, a little mdma, weed or whatever else. More options for when they need some escape and not as much damage being done to their health. I'm sure if this was the case they wouldn't be getting fucked up on alcohol all the time. Even a little codeine works well in social situations. But alcohol is the only thing we're legally allowed for some reason.
