Books about Addiction

For my english research assignment this year i have to read ~5 books and watch ~3 films with a certain theme among them. I will then have to analyse these texts and how each text presents the theme + compare/contrast the texts etc.

We get to choose the theme from a list, and to my surprise, one of them was - addiction. I instantly became attracted to this theme, as currently i am experiencing this (opiates, sighh). I already have interest and experience in this area, and i thought maybe - at the end of this - it might even help me overcome my own addictions.

So now, i need a list of books/short stories/poems/etc which deal with addiction (Im mainly concerned with drug addiction, but other forms of addiction could be useful and are welcome). Im not really an active reader, so have no idea which authors/books are good etc etc. Basically - im quite lost :P

Currently i have a few books which my teacher suggested to me on my potential-reading-list. These are :

A Million Little Pieces - James Frey
Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh
The Quiet American - Graham Greene
Brideshead Revisted - (?)
Tender is the Night - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Scar Tissue - (?)
Requiem for a Dream - (?)

I also need films, however i have started another thread in the Film & Television forum ( http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?p=5789039#post5789039 ) If you have any film suggestions please post them in there as i would like to keep them separate.

I look forward to your suggestions/comments/advice.

Thanks :)

Flash by Charles Duchaussois is an incredible book about addiction and how your life slowly transforms into a nightmare.
My favourite book about drugs, and one of my all time favourite books.
And no matter if you are not an active reader, this book is just FASCINATING.
