So I'm planning on visiting bonnaroo next year and I was kind of concerned about their search policy (that they profess to have on their website)

did anybody notice how they searched your vehicle, specifics please, like if they took stuff out and opened backpacks, or if they used drug sniffing dogs

Maybe look in your coolers for glass bottles/weapons. They might not even do that since bonnaroo is so big. However I recommend other festivals (rothbury, campbisco, 10,000 lakes etc...) over bonnaroo. You'll probably have a much better time as far as partying goes at these events and the lineups are always so much better as well as the vibe and people.

because the dead are still worth seeing... :P

just kidding, but seriously I guess I'm pretty damn conventional in my music tastes but no other festival has the mix of good acts like bonnaroo (TV on the radio, MGMT, Phish etc.) , rothbury would be nicer imo (and easier for me to get to, but more people I know would rideshare down to bonnaroo as well

also, alot of these festivals (as far as I can tell from readin the websites) are just as commercialized and "safe" as bonnaroo, all around it just seems like the best value

when I went a few years ago all they were lookin for was glass bottles and N2O tanks..if they didn't see them clearly in the open then they let you ride on through.

awesome, yeah, I wasn't to scared about bringing mj in but I wondered how thoroughly I should prepare (I like to plan ahead)

also, how would bongs be veiwed by security personnel, (glass ones)

on one hand I'd be 18 by the time of the festival and could claim tobacco use but they are glass, or is that just applied to bottles?

ps. also how is recreational drug use viewed since I know its going to be pretty unavoidable and impossible for security to control but would I be stopped for smoking a joint or is security more laid back? ie,"what's that funky smell coming from his tent?"

Dude you just need to go to a festival and see what it is like.

Drugs are used openly, just go to one and all your questions will be answered, and hopefully you'll get laid.

ROFL @ hopefully get laid.

Festivals are cool. just don't stash your shit in the open. you will only get hassled >1% of the time, and then only if you are being too blatant.

I just went this year for the first time. it's a blast! even if you don't really like the music the environment is enough to keep you interested. if you are into camping and walking around through mud then it is your place. i'm actually not into using portable toilets so next year i am bringing my own, but they actually clean them like all day long and the trucks smell like ass. but as far as the searching goes this was mine:

guy: can you guys step out of the car?
me: sure
guy: *looks through the car a bit* ...
other guy: *opens the trunk which was packed by tetris masters if i do say so myself* ... ... ... you don't have any glass bottles or guns in there do you?
me: no
guy: enjoy the show!

it was pretty easy. i guess they randomly pull people out and the sheriff does a full search but from what i understand they don't check your person. but its kindof a clusterfuck getting through the entrance so i think they probably let everyone in anyways. it would take them hours to tow a car out after arresting the owners...

so go next year. i'll see you there.

If you pack your stuff deep and cleverly there is pretty much 0 chance that the event staff that checks you on the way in will find it. These people are normally kids working to get a free ticket, they are concerned with finding things that are blatantly obvious. They may or may not ask you to lift your trunk. I came in a minivan and they just opened the side door, saw we were packed with people and luggage, and waved us through.

Our friends behind us were in a sedan and they got asked to pop their trunk but nothing got rummaged through. They are mostly looking for glass, then weapons. That is about it.

What you need to be worried about is LEAVING Bonnaroo because the Manchester police was huge assholes and they aren't stupid - they know pretty much everybody leaving Bonnaroo late on Sunday night is going to be inebriated and have drugs and shti on them and they WILL take advantage of that. Even if you sleep over and wait to leave Monday still be very aware of the police presence and drive carefully. Try not to have any illicits on you when you leave.

definately leave monday morning. if for anything less than the hassle of leaving sunday night in the dark and tent steaks, oh god... but you will be able to see the cops, which i didnt really see that many out there...more directing traffic then anything else. and i didnt see one single car pulled over all the way through TN...or even to RI for that matter.. just don't drive like an ass cos drugs or no drugs, who wants a ticket?

same here. I was there in 2004. Oh and idk about bonnaroo being any safer than other festivals. I took the bus in from the airport and while I was walking to my camp site some scuzzy hippie was creeping up on my like he was trying to steal my bag. I heard him say "this one right here" and I turned around as he was going in for the grab, luckily I caught up with what was going on before they could do anything.
Someone I was camping next to got their tent and ALL their camping gear stolen. (and I heard similar stories from some other people about getting their shit ganked while they were watching shows.) Someone else got their wallet stolen. I guess stuff like this is expected with 90,000 people. But I've never heard of so many people getting their shit stolen at other festivals. Maybe I was just camped out in a ghetto area. You should be fine if you lock up what you can and have your wits about you. Still I'd go back if my friends weren't such pussies and always backed out of plans.

I wouldn't bring a bong, maybe a small glass pipe and/or rolling papers. LOTS of water and enough money to afford all the goodies.

Been there in 2005 and 2006. Cops searched my car when I got lost but were really cool and just made us throw out a lil bud we had and let us keep our pipe. Theres actually two entrances one you enter with your car and one when you walk to the stages. They will check your trunk but I think thats mainly so you arent smuggling people then on the entrance to get to the stages they check bags and thats it. Crotch it. I am glad to say that both my years at bonnaroo were totally drama free.

I went to 10,000 lakes festival this year and the police were out in full force. The state patrol coincidentally holds their annual K9 Drug dog training/conference near the festival during the festival week. The newspaper said there were 10 K9 drug units on the only road into the festival and they were pulling people over for things like tinted windows and searching the car. They also have undercover cops roaming all over the campgrounds looking for people selling and using drugs. They made about 20 felony drugs arrests (all for LSD, MDMA, or mushrooms) and gave away 70 non-felony drug (marijuana) tickets. To give out 70 marijuana tickets I have to imaging that they were ticketing people who were just hanging out smoking joints at their campsite. The festival and people were great, but I don't know if I want to risk arrest just to see some music. I think I will go somewhere else next year. There is a country music festival at the same location 2 weeks after 10KLF and they don't have nearly the amount of police. All the arrests at 10KLF were drug related (no assaults, thefts, etc reported). At the country music festival there were probably 50+ reports of assault, thefts, and a few sexual assaults. The police need to readjust their policies and focus on the people committing real crimes rather than someone smoking a joint at their campsite.

bonnaroo actually has their own message board to discuss all aspects of the event. you might find some of the threads over there helpful, like this one about security. like any festival, be smart about what you bring and how you pack it. i would skip the glass bong.
