Bong lip

You could try an experiment; wipe the lips with an alcohol swab before inhaling and compare to control. Maybe something like a lip gloss would help =D

I recommend Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment; much cheaper than your average lip balm and most chemists stock it. :D Of course if you're sharing your bong your mates may or may not approve of the pawpaw flavoured greasy residue you leave behind.... ;)

A little tidbit of info I recall reading stating wearing lip gloss can increase the risk of developing skin cancer on your lips though (enhances UV exposure):

That's not a scientific/peer reviewed link though but still an interesting theory.

Ha ha! Damn P-D... forgive me. It was early, i was high.

But..

All this is technically theory right? I mean do we REALLY... and by we i mean you.. know what is the actual cause ? Or is this only speculation.

Also, i have found the shittier the weed the more likely you are to encounter bong lip. Thats all... thats what i have personally found.

^ Let us use the term 'educated guess' shall we?

I mean yeah sure we're taking a stab in the dark here - bong water is bong water - it hits your lips when you suck too hard, thus bong lip occurs.

It's gross, its filthy, and yeah heaps of cunts mix their dope with tobacco which seems only to make the water even worse.

mmmm bong water for breakfast. win.

I used to know someone back in my smoking prime that would scrape all the dregs from the inside of a bong, dry it out and smoke that shit.

no matter how desperate i was back them for a smoko everyday. i never lowed myself to that sort of level.

drinking bong water? WTF... the only time someone i knew that had was from a bet. It was the worst bong water, must of been a month old with heavy use and the dude ended up only drinking half and then dry reaching. he lost the bet that was for 50 bucks

Not unless you'd consider the terms, condensation and adsorption to be speculative...There's possibly also some charged particle and electrostatic forces involved but by and large the effects would be due to the above processes.

Think about what the deposit actually is, how it's formed, and the processes that occur when volatiles come in contact with different surfaces of different temperatures. In a conventional distillation setup, the volatiles travel up a vertical column and into a condenser, where they cool, condense, and run out the bottom. However, if the vapour pressure is low and viscosity of the solidified material high, stuff will collect in the condenser, concentrating around parts which conduct heat better or have significantly greater surface area. The surface area around the bong-lip interface is also suddenly increased and glass and and lips are better conductors of heat than air. Thermal conductivity or glass is ~1.1 w/m/k (watts per kelvin per metre (W·K−1·m−1 )) compared to 0.025 for air. Lips will be somewhere in between.

Bong lip with straight smokers happens often.

+1 with 18 years of experience.

Has anyone noticed the bonglip problem increasing recently? Like since the sparking weed vanished? My friends have found this.

My opinion is that the the diameter of the mouthpiece affects bonglip. If you use a coke/water bottle all the tar that would get stuck on your lips goes straight into your lungs therefore avoiding bonglip to your detriment.

I have also found that using a crumpled tissue in the mouthpiece will lead to sore lungs a few months down the track as you need to inhale harder.

A digital volcano will solve all these problems.

Absolutely

I'm keen to hear if any long term bong smokers here suffer from hiatus hernia?

What about a hooker, with it's mouth piece?
I'm hoping you mean hookah - I try not to call my hookers "it" as they get narky and try and punch me in the face - leading to what I call "hooker lip"....

Have not had a hernia but did witness a flatmate pull a muscle in her back from trying to pull through a blocked cone =D

I notice a few posters above denigrating gutter hash (ie bong scrapings) - ok it is not a very pleasant smoke but will get you stoned. I'm way too sophisticated to stoop so low these days but have not always been so...

I don't think I've experienced bong lip for years - have been mostly smoking joints for last decade. Probably just smoke less bongs and you will get less bong lip :)

Im still trying to figure out where you work that allows you access to a computer all the time it would seem have down periods where you can leave.. and also punch cones and come back to work.

Thanks to a generous Bluelighter I work from home. ;) Haha

To answer your question P_D, I am a long term bong smoker and a while ago I was diagnosed with a hernia. I went to get an ultrasound and it didn't seem to show much, but it is right behind my ribcage. From all my symptooms though the doctor was pretty sure it was a hernia.

This was a few years ago now, I was meant to go for further testing but in the end I never really bothered. I am a lazy son of a bitch and seeing how I avoid most strenuous physical activity it tends to bother me very rarely these days. For some reason the second I try do a chinup it feels like it's about to shoot out of me, seems like an odd exercise to aggravate it.

Funny I have always thought my heavy bong smoking probably contributed. Since I originally done it while having a coughing fit sitting on the toilet, it seems fair to say my bong smoking contributed in one way or another, even if it was just by fucking my lungs making me prone to cough.

lmao, I hope no-one rushed out and bought one of the other types =D

Don't worry P_D, your initial reaction is well-founded in engineering fact and patented technology.

Method of using a water pipe.

Say goodbye to bong lip.

Actually for my own weigh-in on this thread, bong-lip was a clear sign that I needed to clean my pipe. Not just the water, but the resin collecting in the stem, etc. Big spring clean time.

BT :)

BT, that patent is a crackup! =D ;)

Thanks for the old link, I'd forgotten about that very informative thread...

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all if forcing your diaphragm in such an unnatural way could cause problems over a long period, particularly if using a multi chambered, or constantly blocked up bong.
