Is enough being done to protect Australians from terrorist attacks?

I was watching an interview this morning and the journo asked an Indonesian spokesman the same question.

He quite rightly answered back that "no Australians were killed, Indonesians were".

but tragedies of this scale also help the economy grow.

Economic rationalism at its finest, ladies and gentlemen; there's a potential threat to our lives on the horizon, and you've got big green dollar signs in your eyes. As for the attack, it's hardly suprising and in my mind probably signals the start of something rather ugly.

but tragedies of this scale also help the economy grow. you just have to look away from the tragedy and emotion of the matter and consider who profits from a bombed out building. insurance companies lose, but they are so rich from the number of people who will never make a claim that it doesn't matter. construction and cleanup workers get paid extra money. so do emergency services, both in wages and extra funding. hospitals get more blood donors. think alone of how many jobs will be created from the reconstruction of whatever gets blown up. think of how this affects GDP. inflation. economic power. governments even base foreign policy on these bombings to protect domestic trade, business relations, tourists can travel safer overseas.

This made me feel ill.

In regards to an impending attack, I feel no different to how I felt pre-embassy bombing. What happened in Jakarta really scared/scares me, but that's due to a whole lot of my family being in Indonesia, not because it's a message to Australia. The threat of an attack has been hovering over our heads for so long that the severity of this bombing is lost on me.

agree with the first part but not the second. the rather ugly bit, imo, started with the invasion of afghanistan ( some would argue from 911 but "hey, shit happens"!! )

Rather than raving about economics at every opportunity, try looking into something called socio-economics...

Try offsetting your strict maths with human rights...

bombings and destruction we see every day like this all around the world are just a few hours of tragedy, hard work, heartache, pain, and loss. but for those who survive, sometimes the bombing makes things better.

Yeah, and the bombings in Bali were great for the Balinese economy. When you have a country whose economy is largely based on tourist trade and the tourists stop coming - tell me how that's a good thing.
