well.. i've been waiting for a terrorist attack on australia for quite a while now...

i never actually considered bali to be a direct attack on australians, more of an attack on western culture poisioning the island....

but now we have had our first direct terrorist attack on an australian interest... luckily for us it happened overseas and hasn't hit our shores yet... but i think it is only a matter of time...

do we take our security for granted? have you ever stopped to think about how lucky we actuallly are to have the freedom we do? compare getting on a bus in downtown sydney compared to getting on a bus in israel... at least in sydney you only have to worry about underage little shits being smartarses, or drunk people.. not about someone just hopping on a bus and exploding....


JI have claimed that they did the bombing and did it due to our involvement in iraq...... do you feel any source of anger towards our government for this involvement?

do you think that this bomb is designed to cause instability in the incumbent government??


RIP for those killed...... but i find it kinda funny (not amusing funny) that the terrorists have targeted us, but only managed to kill people from their own country....

Another tragic event at the hands of terroists. Once again it is anybody apart from the people they claim they are targetting who do all the suffering.

I think that even if we had no direct involvement in the Iraq conflict we would still have been a target. Remembering that the Bali bombings were nearly six months prior to the U.S led invasion of Iraq. To them we are Westerners tresspassing on Muslim soil. Am i angry with the goverment? Fuck yeah, but no more than i was when Little Johnnie sent our troops to Iraq in the first place.

I'm sure that it was part of the intent, as for it's result i don't know.I hate to say it but I can't help but feel that this will strengthen Howards cause, even though it's being claimed that our involvement in Iraq is the reasoning behind the bombings, i can see Howard using it just as easily as defence for striving in "The war on terror".

it's pretty fucking horrible that terrorists (or anyone) feel the need to resort to such tactics to get our attention, but when our government feels it necessary to bomb the shit out of a country to "free" them, we can't exactly be surprised.

the attack is in NO WAY justified, but it is understandable.

Am I angry at the Government for having the balls to make a stand against tyranny? No.

Am I angry that these groups continue to hide behind the veil of religion? Absofuckinglutely.

Australia has always been a target, as we've always been a strong ally of the US, long before Iraq, and I'm pretty sure long into the future. To use the Iraq invasion as an excuse or reason is merely a cover.

The simple truth in my mind is that 'these people' are nothing more than a bunch of evil sub-humans capable of horrific atrocities against all mankind, with a pure hatred for anything different to them, and they use religion as their justification to the world.

Reminds me of an early time in history where someone felt that anyone different to him should be killed...hopefully these people eventually meet the same fate.

Yeah, I think that picture above ^^^ the picture of the Australian flag still standing with shattered windows in the background is pretty powerful picture, like it says thousands words, we Australians won't put up with this bullshit and we will keep going on strong, even some people won't argee with my opinion/view. Hence some people say "we live in lucky country"...

I find hard to answer this question, why there hasn't been attacks in Australia yet? is because we have good secuirty or not? or what because of these boat people operation running up northern coast of Australia keeping eye on illegal boat people who could be potential terrorists?

I had one guy (a total stupid paranoid tripper) explaining to me and ranting for a good hour that the bombings were set up by the Australian secuirty forces experts because it's election time, and Johnnie is trying to score points for the election using some lame terrorist excuses and was trying to expose Latham's weakness in secuirty issues.

I don't know what to say or believe these days, all I worry about is that my family and friends are safe.

I hate to say it but this definately points towards a targeting of Australia or at least Australian interests.

Hopefully it doesn't come to our shores is all I'm thinking. I do think that its only a matter of time until theres an attack of some sort in Sydney though, we really put ourselves out there in the war against terrorism and WMD's.

I'm going in a few weeks, I'm not worried at all. I was there last year at the time the Sari club got blown up, and my experience with all the locals was fine. Only one bad thing almost happened. On our way back to Jakarta airport to head home to Sydney we see motorcyclist sitting on the road-side with a bunch of other bikers, then as we pass him he chases us down and rides in front of our cab, he stops, gets out and starts banging on the windows shouting in indonesian, while i'm shouting at the cabby to just drive, then the poor cabby starts crying, the guy eventually gives up and bails. Lucky people are too poor to afford guns there. But yeah that could of happened anywhere.

this stuff happens all the time all around the world. i think we got off really lucky in terms of deaths and injuries.

but tragedies of this scale also help the economy grow. you just have to look away from the tragedy and emotion of the matter and consider who profits from a bombed out building. insurance companies lose, but they are so rich from the number of people who will never make a claim that it doesn't matter. construction and cleanup workers get paid extra money. so do emergency services, both in wages and extra funding. hospitals get more blood donors. think alone of how many jobs will be created from the reconstruction of whatever gets blown up. think of how this affects GDP. inflation. economic power. governments even base foreign policy on these bombings to protect domestic trade, business relations, tourists can travel safer overseas.

bombings and destruction we see every day like this all around the world are just a few hours of tragedy, hard work, heartache, pain, and loss. but for those who survive, sometimes the bombing makes things better.

its a little crazy once you realise how much terrorism affects the economy, how much swing it can have depending on what is targetted, it is no surprise that western nations have tried to drag it out as long as they can by fighting back. a war against terrorism incites terrorism, and thus creates growth.

so these days i find it impossible to want to point the finger at anyone who is responsible. because in the end it could be anyone. governments, terrorists, some 14yo pyro. the who is trivial.
