i took issue with this snippet from Terence in the interview:

One of the things I wanted to do by design in the finale is make the audience pissed off [at the start of the episode]. I wanted people to say [when it seemed like Nucky and Jimmy would reconcile], “Oh great, after all that, it’s all going to be forgotten and Jimmy is going to be back in Nucky’s good graces.” I wanted them to think right up to the very end that Nucky is going to forgive him and take him back.

pissed off?! i was happy they might reconcile and then finally off Eli and Manny in some awesome and horrible way. i'm disappointed that Eli walked away unscathed when (if i remember correctly) he was the one who suggested executing Nucky. Eli is a weasel and though Nucky's been quite cunning, i'm upset that Eli, who i've found pretty unlikeable, might've actually out-witted Nucky and manipulated him into becoming a very cold and callous killer. it seems to me to be difficult to root for Nucky as the bad-guy after this.

i was shocked last night. my boyfriend says, "whoa! this is a season finale right? not the series finale?" i'm very curious about season 3 and plan to watch just to see what direction the show takes.
 
Ok so i read that interview and... while i have to agree with Fawkes that i had the same reaction about the Jimmy and Nucky reconciliation, i have to say that after reading that and giving it some thought, maybe there is hope for the series after all. I mean, before i saw this episode i was already thinking that Jimmy was going to die, i just thought that it would be next season (I still think it should have been). But going back to the Breaking Bad example that '3,4' brought up, do we really want to see this show be the same dual-character idea as BB, or let it go in its whole new direction... I dont know, i still havnt decided...

I agree with most everyone here in their reactions to the season finale. Fawes-I am with you-I was stoked at the thought of Nucky and Jimmy reconciling. That possibility NEVER pissed me off. I AM pissed off that Jimmy is gone,although I wonder if perhaps his character will live on through flashbacks-mainly from Nucky,but also through Richard,Jimmy's mom and his son. Perhaps we have not seen the last of Michael Pitt!! I would like to think he will turn up from time to time.

Margaret has lost all interest in me-I hope she becomes Nucky's next "do it myself" murders. what a bitch. Nucky has definitely pissed me off-forgiving his brother whom he KNOWS conspired against him and while Jimmy has to die,Eli just takes the wrap...definitely an insight into the real villain that is Nucky. And after such a touching scene-Nucky and Teddy encouraging Emily to walk..then using Manny FUCKER,to be the precipitant of Jimmy's death...these are the the perfect juxtaposition of good/evil that inexorable exists within us all. Margaret has quite the evil bitch within her...playing the pious,loving,struggling immigrant-a character I fell for as a truly good person,delighting in her's and Nucky's relationship-now sealing her own fate as Nucky is going to be hurt- more so than angry.
Idk wtf to expect from the next season. As a loyal HBO viewer-series,documentaries and the main movie machine that it is,I cannot see myself NOT watching the next season,if out of nothing but sheer curiosity.
A definite "what the fuck" of season finales. I still need to watch it again as I woke just in time to watch "Luck"-off topic(not sure if this one will grab me) and watched the 2nd showing of the finale after the Luck pilot premiere. Having little to do and even fewer means to do anything but watch TV,I think I will not only watch the finale at least once more,but perhaps both season 1 and 2 on HBO.GO online.
All in all...I am truly shocked.

Yeah, I totally agree. They all kept suggesting to just kill Nucky and Jimmy kept saying no, when finally Eli pipes up and pretty much makes it final that they were gonna put the hit out on Nucky. Because I guess they were all like well shit if even his brother doesn't mind and is actually in favor of it then why not and Jimmy finally agrees but you could still see it was conflicting him very much

I'm super sad to see Jimmy go though, he was my favorite character and pretty much the driving force of the show imo. While Steve Buscemi is great he just doesn't stand out very much to me as Nucky, I actually liked him as Tony Blundetto in The Sopranos better. Just like others have said though I'll still watch next season mainly to see Richard out getting revenge for his only true bro, but not expecting the same quality unless they introduce a new character or something that blows me out of the water

She is a replaceable actor, however, Pitt is not. Who could they possibly find who is more compelling than Jimmy? It would be like Breaking Bad killing off Jesse in Season 2, or The Sopranos killing off Chris in season 2.

I feel like The Soprano's comp is appropriate. That show would have suffered greatly from losing Tony and Christopher's love/hate relationship.
What the Soprano's still would have had going for it, and what, IMO, would have carried the show successfully through, was the numerous other compelling characters and relationships.
Tony(obviously,) Carmela, Silvio, Pauly, etc, etc. Compare it to BE. Not so much.

I've never had such a visceral reaction to a television character being killed off. I suppose it's kind of impressive that Terrence Winter evoked that kind of reaction from the majority of the shows audience. I still believe it was effectively the shows suicide. These kinds of shows follow something of a formula for a reason. Pissing off your audience, and expecting them to come crawling back with the promise of a season centered on Capone is completely fucking stupid.

There's a couple comments from Pitt about the finale, as well as a reference to a rumor about him being difficult to work with. Terrence Winter says it's "Absolutely not true." But what else would he say?
If it were true, and he was awful, things would make a little more sense. But whatever......... Time to wait on The Walking Dead and try, try again to watch Hell On Wheels.
 
I just don't see them using Richard that much more. Maybe to kill Manny. I don't know. Somebody wake me if they do.

It killed me to see Jimmy die. His character was exceptional. There was so much depth there. I easily sympathized with decisions, especially when I learned more about his past. I truly hoped Nucky would find some way to forgive him, but I think in that scene, we see how cold-blooded Enoch Thompson. Really is. And that blood is thicker than water (even if he practically raised Jimmy as his son).

Margaret doesn't bother me too much. And her regret could have filled that dining room when she talked to Nucky regarding his whereabouts the night previous. Ouch. Should've listened to Esther Randolph.

Is there any chance Owen will be given more screen time next season?

P.S. I'm really going to miss Jimmy's lips. Oh my...
 
Fucking good shit, finished watching the 2nd series now... i'm sure they could have took jimmy further, sad to see him go.

I was pissed they killed Jimmy too, I thought they were setting him up to be a major character throughout the second season.

Anyone feel that the scene where Nucky and Margaret get married intercut with Jimmy murdering the alderman was a direct omage to the Godfather baptism scene?

I also liked how they showed the conflict between the "Young Turks" and "The Mustache Petes" over starting to deal heroin. Which was also straight out of the The Godfather.
 
Jimmy was the show. How they are going to continue without him defeats the fuck out of me. I really wanted to see Manny get his throat cut, and Eli too.
 
Season 3 premier tomorrow! I doubt I'll love the show as much without Jimmy in the mix but I'm sure they'll find away to make the show great. Who else is stoked?
 
I think Nucky is a chump to keep that woman around. He tries to preserve his image by killing a petty thief, but he remains married to someone who robbed him of millions?

I like the Rosetti character, but they could've established the fact that he is a dangerous asshole in a more subtle way.

Van Alden is a great character.

The guy that plays Al Capone is no Al Capone.
 
I think that dude plays an alright capone, stephen graham i think his name is.

Van Alden meetin that o bannion dude is deff foreshadowing an allegiance or something on that level.

plus, in 1923 Capone was 24. Stephen Graham is 39!
 
richard harrow is such a sad and compelling character.
shotgun blasts to the face are always entertaining to watch.
 
Did anybody see something between the new girl and Harrow? Maybe he'll actually try to find a girl this season since Angela is gone.

God, I felt really depressed for Van Alden the entire episode. I mean, yeah he did kill his ex-partner so he lucked out in actually getting away to Chicago but damn was that sad. Glengarry Glen Ross style. I can't imagine being a door-to-door salesman. I agree he's going to hook up with the Northside Chicago gangster somehow.

Rosetti is fucking insane and going to be really fun to watch all season.

The 'treasure' scene grossed me out... sheer greed. This is not going to go well for Nucky in the upcoming episodes.
