Television Boardwalk Empire

Lots of spoilers for this episode so…

It was pure genius. Nucky teams with Capone, bribes Rothstein with a distillery in return that Rothstein buys off Masseria to get his help off of Rossetti. Capone and Chalky then massacre Masseria's men on their route and Nucky turns in Rothstein's ownership of said distillery to the federal prosecutor. Meanwhile, Richard singlehandedly takes out all of Rossetti's men to rescue Tommy. Nucky and Eli then handle the rest of them, including Rossetti himself.

So basically, in one single motion Nucky eliminated an entire world of people actively working against him while aligning himself with the rest.

That's some gangster chess right there.

Now the question becomes, with so many questions to resolve and angles to pursue, where does the series go from here?

Edit: One question in particular would be, how did Nucky get Andrew Mellon to agree on the distillery issue? Mellon isn't involved in the underground/overground gangster culture, and as evidenced by his not even knowing Rothstein's name, he couldn't possibly have done it as a personal vendetta. To me it only seems like a loss for him, but I'm guessing that will be addressed in the near future.

Awesome fucking finale. It has everything, Richard Harrow kicking ass, Capone smoking a cigar and firing off a vickers machine gun (.30 cal if I'm not mistaken) and just... EVERYTHING about the episode was win IMO.

that scene with nukky and eli, right after gyp got the shank, best of the series imo.

Leaves me wondering where the whole rothstein/overholt, and DOYLE mind you, situation is headed.

I think every person who walked out on nukky when he first called for help wont make it through the next season. Can't do business with anyone we dont already trust, that leaves a lot of blood letting to be done.

The masseria cliffhanger is what made it special.

You can speculate on richard, but im certain whatever happens will be unexpected. Thats his style.

You know a series finale done right, by the sesne of contention and not giving a fuck there wont be another episode next sunday.

Some of the best entertanment hbo has aired in years, arguably drama television in general.

Goddamn dude (just watched it).

Great finale, great season. This show has elevated itself, I had very low expectations for this season and its quality surprised the fuck out of me.

I like where it is headed, Nucky going underground, Margret getting the fuck out (most annoying character ever, dominated the screen time in a weak season 2), Richard coming to terms with being a killer and how it isn't going to change, etc...

-I wouldn't mind seeing the Margaret of season one, the one that reads Henry James and outwits senators in spite of her social class. But I can definitely do without the Pious Queen Margaret of the Thompson Empire that we had the last two seasons.

-Also noteworthy is that Luciano and Lansky are going to be the obvious beneficiaries of Arnold Rothstein's fall in New York. I wonder if they remain working together.

-I wonder if Bugsy Siegel is going to emerge as a leading character.

-And finally, it's going to be great to see Rothstein finally realize he has been taken, I hope the news is broken while he's playing pool.

Edit:

-Also, what was the 'deal' that Eli and Nucky made with Capone in Chicago.

-Where will Van Alden end up in his incredibly peculiar role as a devout prohibitionist pitted between two rival gangs of bootleggers.

-Do Gillian's comments to Nucky have implications of even further contention in their relationship?

-I know it would cost a lot of time and money but could we maybe see some Detroit in this show? Detroit was huge in the bootlegging world. My friend's house has an actual tunnel in the basement that goes to Canada under the Detroit River. It's been cemented up for a while now, unfortunately.

(did some simple research and found that 75% of all liquor imported during prohibition came through Detroit)

Holy shit Richard fucking Harrow everyone
Gawd damn that was one of the most bad ass shoot outs I've ever seen

But how in the fuck did Gillian survive that shot?
Either she was just trying to let Gyp catch a nod or she's been using herself, because if that didn't kill her, I would most likely think it wouldn't have killed Gyp

Unless she was just planning on sedating him enough to suffocate him like with what she did with Dimmy...

I was pissed that she survived. I was seriously hoping she would catch a bullet by Harrow.

Not I, I'm actually glad she survived
She's pretty much the only non straight up boring female character on the show besides Esther Randolph, which is awesome by the way...

But Gillian only learned to be the way she is (grimy, crooked, undermining, and crazy as fuck) from the grimy crooked men in her life... She's basically the only female that can keep up and stay on the same level of badass as all the gangsters in the show

I think eventually they'll have big plans for her...

Edit: Oh yeah, Ingrid, George aka Nelson's wife is pretty fucking awesome too, but I wonder why they didn't give him some kind of resolution or something for the season finale

Hopefully him and the Chicago mobsters get a lot more screen time next season
This series could go on for 20 seasons and I'd most likely love it, just imagine a series finale in the late 30's, we'd get to see Nucky going broke and losing power during the depression, Lucky forming the commission, Capone forming the outfit and killing Irishmen, and Tommy killing Nucky right before he goes off to fight in WWII

My best guesses are......
I figure Nucky and Eli's deal with Capone sends booze straight into Capone's hands and around Torrio's(who seems to have lost interest anyway.) Just a means for a power play on Capone's part.
Those who feel Van Alden is going to end up being gangster muscle for Capone or O'Banion are selling the character short. He's so fucking bizarre. For the character to just turn into another hood would be disappointing.
Gillian referring to when Nucky "delivered" her to The Commodore seems like just another facet of her hate for Nucky. Between that and Jimmy, I don't know if she could want him any more dead then she already does.

Richard Harrow has gotta be one of the top 3 most interesting, awesome characters on television. As others have mentioned they did, I also went back and re-watched the shootout a handful of times. Beautifully shot and wonderfully graphic. Reminded me of the last scene in Taxi Driver a little.
With a certain female character now gone from The Walking Dead, Margaret has now taken the spot of the most insufferable female character on television, IMO. Ugh. I can't take another season(s) of "thee chilldrun."
Glad to finally see Chalky(aka Michael K Williams aka Omar Little) get his fair share of the spotlight. It was criminal to relegate him to a bit role most of the series.

Couple minor issues I had...
I found the romance between Margaret and Owen to be horribly contrived. He wants to run away with her? To what, exactly? Ireland, I guess? Seemed stupid when he's already got a girl 5 times hotter than Mrs. Thompson and is already the right hand to Mr. Thompson and, I'm assuming, well numerated. I guess they must have felt it added impact to what happened, but it felt dumb.
I enjoyed watching Eli and Nucky's reactions while walking through the brothel and realizing someone had already done their dirty work for them. My issue is, why would they have come alone? Granted, Gyp didn't have a whole lot of guys left, but he had enough to take out those 2. The Thompson's had a small army at their disposal and they're gonna go at it alone? With a revolver and a shotgun? Seemed a little haphazard.

^ i wondered about that too. harrow going in and killing everyone in sight made sense, but still, nucky and eli showing up there over all the obviously unexpected corpses understaffed and underarmed was the only thing about this finale i didn't love. apart from that it was pitch fucking perfect, and the whole of S3 has been one of my absolute favorite pieces of TV ever. i already thought that the last episode was incredibly good, but this just re-affirmed everything i love about boardwalk empire.

Exactly, lets see how she responds to Tommy being taken away from her.

95L, great points, give me a minute, haha.

I'd just like to point out that this is an incredible idea and would be amazing if they did feature The Purple Gang and Detroit on the show

There are just so many different awesome characters and story lines already and so much potential for new characters, fictional or not, to be introduced in the coming seasons

ATTENTION MAX POWERS, YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS FUCKING SHOW ALREADY :]

I still can't believe you haven't seen The Sopranos
Max Powers can't into mafia?

My only complaint about Boardwalk Empire is that it has ruined other television shows for me. After so many years of 'playing the field', it's just odd to be in this monogamous relationship.

I love mob films. It's television series that I can't into.

Well written television shows make for a depth of character development that just isn't possible in a two hour movie. As a fan of characters, I endorse this.

The Coen brothers are a noteworthy exception. It's their signature creative skill, in my opinion.

I'm a couple episodes into season 2 and I have to externalize this somewhere: that Lucy Danzinger character makes me wretch. I physically cringe and elicit an "UGH!" when her visage defiles my screen.

NSFW:
But I'm stoked b/c I used the wiki page to look up the character's name and it says she is a past character. Whoo-hoo! I hope Richard Darrow busts a cap in her repulsive mouth! Fuck, I've not ever been so incensed and disgusted by a character on a television show. I would probably stop watching if she were given more screen time.

I also really hope the Luciani (sp?) character gets it bad too. He is such a little punk, and I want to reach into their dimension and give that little smirk of his a solid slapping. But then, I couldn't handle Nelson for a while either, but I've come around.

NSFW:
When he drowned his partner in front of that black Baptist congregation and shouted some Biblical verse about "evil" I started to enjoy him. He cracks me up in a way like Daniel Plainview of There Will Be Blood does.
