Bluelights in toilets......

this is quite funny, i had no idea. i was in sydney recently and encountered a car park where the entrace way was all uv lit. in a dodgy area (kings cross).
me and my boyf thought it was really funny, as we were on our way to a club and dressed in tons of uv stuff we danced there for the cctv!
um. yeah.

"work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, dance like nobody's watching"

However the greatest opposition to their use comes from the fact that people wishing to shoot up just go to the nearest alley instead...
---------------------------------------------
This is the point of these, a buisiness owner couldnt give a fuck if some junky is shooting up in an ally down the road, he does care though if its in his toilet, thats why they put the lights in. Saying that though i enjoy using the facilites that have this UV light, not for shooting, just pissing, it makes it a memorable experiance.

^^^
The point is, these are installed in public toilets not ones owned by private businesses... So it hardly does anything for public health/saftey, becuase the addict just goes somewhere else public.

Sorry, these are in private toilets, that is there most common use, im from aus and thats the only place ive seen them. It wouldnt surprise me at all though to see them in public toilets, the australian government is fucked when it comes to drugs, all three policies are only making problems worse.
At least its not as bad as us laws though.

Australia have got it pretty good comparativley, FREE needle exchanges, syringe vending machines on a public street -thats pretty good. It's an attempt at dealing with the safey issue at least.

Boy I can't believe there's such a huge debate on the blue lights in toliets...I have a very simple view of it...It looks nice! The end.

"in a room with almost NO LIGHT I can see my veins, if you were to obscure the light to the point I couldn't manage to fix, then it would also be so dark I would be pissing on the floor"
Phreex: From everything I've read and heard the idea (no it's not a particularly good one) is that your veins are a faint blue colour, but the UV light makes every part of your body look blue, therefore, they theorise that junkies will find it harder to locate their veins. I'm not saying that it works, but this is the rationale behind it.
"That really makes no sese... so there is an *open* attitude towards IV drug use, but they install *blue lights* that make it HARDER to see your veins? "
Just because they accept that it's going to happen doesn't mean they don't want it happening in public places. "Think of the children" would seem to be the thinking here. The entire population (except for people like me who wont step foot in them) use public toilets, young, old, rich, poor, none of them want to see a smackie lying on the floor in the cubicle next to them while they're taking a shit...do you?
For another example of Australia's wonderful drug prevention methods: At Frankston station, a station where druggies and 'bad people' in general have a tendency to hang out, they play classical music to try and get them to move on. I've heard from some people that it actually works, though I never go there myself so I couldn't tell you.

now THAT'S just insulting. they think that just cause people are shadey they won't appreciate classical music? i usualy like to bump a little Wagner while i dose up.

What a fucked up country.. you can't go to a bar and get a Zima - you can only go to a pub and get a Fosters.. babies can't sleep safely in their rooms at night for fear of a wild dingo attack, and a digeridoo - WHAT THE HELL IS A DIGERIDOO? AND WHERE IS THE NEVA-NEVA?
As I posted, I saw a picture of one of thes blue-lit bathrooms, it's not like I was thinking... I still maintain - those that have to turn to public bathrooms to shoot-up (those so hooked they can't wait until they home) are either going to mark their veins before they go in or else they have done it enough that the blue light wont prevent them from fixing (I could still hit myself, even with that light, I have done it in darker areas then that..)

"I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I don't care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is: 'What are they in a position to do about it?'" (William S. Burroughs)

Umm, what the fuck is a Zima - hardly anyone drinks Fosters anymore, VB (Victorian Bitter) is the go, and its a good drop too,and dingoes are very cute - cuter than babies, and DIDGERIDOO's get blown in , and the NEVA NEVA ( NEVER NEVER actually - its from a poem ) is the outback, the bush ,the big empty space far - far away.
As for shooting up in toilets , HAH , everyone I know, in these so called bad areas Darlinghurst, Kings X,and Oxford St doesnt even bother - we just do it out in the open for everyone to see - we dont give a fuck !

"? i usualy like to bump a little Wagner while i dose up"
True, and then there was alex who liked a bit of beethoven before heading out for some ultra violence and a few drinks at the molko plus.
Phreex, like I explained it has nothing to do with there being a lack of light, it's that the light is blue and so is your vein. So if the blue light makes everything look blue then how do you see your vein? Well that's the idea anyways but like you said it's not a very good one.
And on the bit about fosters, no one in Australia drinks fosters, it's become pretty much purely an export beer, like the Mexicans with corona. If you want a quality Australian beer get yourself a coopers, a cascade or a james boags, premium beers, not like shitty fosters and VB.
Oh and a didgeridoo is a fucking awesome instrument, great music to trip to. It's got these really deep low moaning sounds sort of whizzing and whiring with a higher pitched sort sound of the same sort that kind of shrieks, only in a good way.

There was a track from back in the day that had a digiridoo in it... I think it ended up in a car commercial.
I'm at the point where I'll say the naive will think blue lights deter IV drug use. The illusion of security is a powerful marketing tool (to quote the bumper sticker I had on my binder in 8th grade "Illusion of safety gives me that soaring feeling"

). Just like urinalysis. Once in a while, raging potheads will pass piss tests, and for every other kind of drug user, the shit's undetectable after 3-4 days.
As for the music, soothing classical stuff probably makes it EASIER to shoot up. Unless you're a die hard fan of something else. If they really wanted to keep people from lingering, they'd play gabber, crust punk, or possibly Hanson.
And as for "hard to shoot up" lighting, I'd go with a really fast strobe.
