Bluelights in toilets......

Perhaps the purple lights alter the structure of heroin turning it into anthrax? 'eh? You fix, but you're fixing WITH ANTHRAX!

In Australia the blue lights are to prevent people shooting up,i dont think it works though,at least not to me.My friend wont shoot up in the flinders st toilets that Crimsonqueen mentioned coz of those lights.....fuck it toilets are a dirty place to do it anyway

Anyone got an article or offical release stating the "blue lights are to stop people from shooting up"? Because that makes no fucking sense.. in a room with almost NO LIGHT I can see my veins, if you were to obscure the light to the point I couldn't manage to fix, then it would also be so dark I would be pissing on the floor... UV light most likely has something to do with health/bacteria .. but preventing people from shooting up? No, that makes no sense..

It DOES make your veins harder to see & that IS the reason the ligghts are there.Of course any practiced user can shoot anyway, but I guess it's the thought that counts.
Australia has a funny attitude towards IV drug use, there are sharps disposal containers in department store toilets & bars & stuff,The blue light thing, needles are free. They've got a good safe using attitude & dont try to pretend that it isnt there. It's a good place to bang drugs & very easy to score too -highly recomended.

That really makes no sese... so there is an *open* attitude towards IV drug use, but they install *blue lights* that make it HARDER to see your veins? I have never even heard of such a thing.. I got creative as I could, and sure enough, found articles about UV lighting as it's used as a means of keeping things SANITARY, but no matter what combo of words I punched in, on several search engines, I couldn't find ANYTHING about special lighting being installed in an attempt to make it harder to see, in turn, preventing junkies from shooting up in public restrooms...
So I think this will be marked down as "Official Urban Legend" .. I don't doubt that the lighting might make it harder to see a vein, but I don't believe it's installed for that reason...
The people that shoot up in public restrooms are usually the type that can hit themsleves in fairly low-light anyway...
I am willing to re-consider if SOME article can be produced.. something from an at least SOMEWHAT credible source that explains UV light obscuring the vision of would-be IV users in public restrooms..

Correct. And what do we know if you stick it in and the barrrel explodes with bright, oxygen-rich blood? Exactly, you hit an artery and not a vein...

I actually saw an article in the Herald-sun(a Melbourne newspaper)about these lights and how its to deter drug users. It was quite a while ago but ill see if i can find it......regardless all my friends with fucked up viens hate these lights.

The man who thought this particular gem up (the UV light makes it impossible to see your veins) has to be the biggest marketing genius since the guy who said "Lets put 'wash again if required' on the back of hair shampoo bottles and double the amount of shampoo we sell!".
Think about it, when a manager of McDonalds or where-ever gets a letter from a company saying "We sell finest quality lights which make it impossible for junkies to see their veins" is that manager going to call the company to ask "Do you have any sample installations for me to go and shoot up in to check this theory?"
Pure marketing genius!!!

In aus there are blue lights under some bridges to, like that one directly opposite crown, im sure that aint there for sanitary reasons. Now lets think, why would anybody install blue lights under bridges and in public tiolets ?????

The not being able to see your vein thing is ludicrous. I think the light temporarily alters the opioid receptors in your brain, causing them to lose some affinity for smack et al. Here's an article which shows that light can have an effect on the binding capacity of these receptors.

Photolabile ligands for opiate receptors.
Zioudrou C, Varoucha D, Loukas S, Streaty RA, Klee WA.
The 2-nitro-4-azidophenyl(NAP)-D-Ala2-Leu5-Enkephalin derivatives: Try-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Leu CONCH2CH2NH-NAP (E-NAP-EDA) and Try-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Leu CONCH2CH2NH-COCH2CH2NHNAP(E-NAP- -Ala-EDA) were synthesized by conventional peptide methods. Their structure was determined by amino acid analysis, ultra violet, visible and infra red spectroscopy. Both peptides were shown a) to bind with high affinity to the opiate receptors of rat brain membranes and b) to inhibit strongly the contractions of electrically stimulated vas deferens and the adenyl cyclase of the NG 108-15 cell membranes. These effects were reversed by the antagonist naloxone. Photoloysis of the rat brain membranes-(E-NAP- -Ala-EDA) complex caused a 20-30% inactivation of the opiate receptors. Inactivation was prevented when the complex was irradiated in the presence of naloxone. The radio-labeled derivatives of these enkephalin analogs may prove useful photochemical labels of the opiate receptor.

These lights where installed as a trial in some areas about a a year ago. Authorities have made recent comments that they are not too effective.
But the aim was to stop people IVing.

Some good links regarding the implementation of blue lights in public toilets within Australia:
Victorian Govt. Dept. of Health
Melboune newspaper 'The Age' on various drug programs (nice pic of the lights)
Sydney newspaper 'Sunday Mail' artilce (pretty crap but anyhow)
Article on the installation of Blue Lights at a major Melbourne hub train station (Herald Sun, another appaling tabloid)
The Blue Lights are being used to deter heroin users by making it more difficult to locate veins. However, they are not without their critics... As PhreeX said, experienced users can bang their veins anyway, and more desparate users mark their veins using pens before going inside. However the greatest opposition to their use comes from the fact that people wishing to shoot up just go to the nearest alley instead...

Dear god.. someone is getting rich off these things... special "lights" that make your veins harder to see ... what a great fucking idea! I should make some special "glasses" to market to junkies that "filter the vein distorting rays" ...
EDIT - I just saw the pic.. nothing at all like I thought.. I was thinking the little boxes with light purple bulbs that kill bacteria, those bathrooms are lit like a rave party! I would DEFINITLY piss all over the bathroom to make a point though!

Taking the doors of is encouraged by law enforcement here as it makes it difficult for people to count out or deal drugs.. in the male restrooms at probably 95% ofthe clubs are gone here in florida - they have done the same in public schools as well..
