I was going to say, Alasdair... I wondered if those things were legal to posess ;)
they are definitely legal to possess. i used to have a small (12" tall) one but i'm not sure what happened to it.

the one in my pic routinely appears at burning man and is about 10' tall. it's hard to describe the feeling - and especially the sound - of a tesla coil that large in operation.

can those things kill you? it looks dangerous but ive seen a photo of tesla sitting in a chair while a 15'-20' tall coil is engulfing the room with sparks..

whats the name of those things that create static with a belt drive and make your hair stand up when you touch it?? (looks similar)

a tesla coil can certainly be fatal. at numerous burning man festivals, i've witnessed incredible tesla-coil related insanity courtesy of dr. megavolt. check out his gallery for some great pictures.

the belt drive thing you are thinking of is a van de graf generator.

^i was waiting for that. it was starting to look like the idea might get overlooked.
nice photo pennywise

Alasdair: I *wish* I could see/hear a coil like that in action!

Although I stand no chance in this round... since we're posting pictures of cities I might go down to Shibuya tonight if this is still open and see what I could capture :)

i aint got shit
is it better to post none
or post something just for the sake of participating ?

just find a neat looking power pole and compose it nicely.
when i vote, i find the composition, lighting, quality and things like this are more important than the subject itself (aslong as it fits the theme that is)

its seems like people in this foum tend to vote on photos with the subject they like even if its composed badly or low quality.

a good photog can make the most boring thing very interesting and fantastic to look at. composition is very important in my eyes at least. this is a photo contest, not "who has the best subject contest"

so yes enter a photo!!
